CAI's POINT OF VIEW
I laid in my Moms bed, snuggled underneath the covers and stared at her bedroom door.
She left to go downstairs to warm me up some green peppermint tea and while I waited- it seemed as if I couldn't stop zoning out.
I still haven't answered her question.
Next, Moms opened the door and walked in slowly with my warm tea in hand.
She looked at me and I slowly closed my eyes and shifted underneath the covers.
"Caiya, baby...you need to talk to me, sweetheart okay?" Ma said as she sat the tea on the nightstand and climbed in bed next to me.
I opened my eyes, sat up and laid my head in her lap.
I kept my eyes open and tears started to fall out.
"How can Mommy help if-...if you don't communicate with me, baby?" She asked me as she started playing with my hair.
I shook my head and tightly closed my eyes.
Even while my eyes were closed I could see his sweaty face.
"Now, who hurt you and what did they do to you?" She asked me as she stopped playing with my hair and stared at the side of my face.
Next, I turned my head upwards and looked into her eyes.
"Demetrius said that he didn't wanna go to prom with me. I texted him about it today and he turned me down." I then said in a soft, low voice.
Ma continued looking into my eyes.
It was silent for a moment and I felt as if she knew that I was lying but...I wasn't sure.
"Baby girl, that's what this is about?" She asked me as she furrowed her eyebrows together.
I nodded my head softly.
"Oh, baby." She said as she leaned down and softly kissed my forehead. "That's his loss then. Why? Because you're going to be the most gorgeous girl that there will ever be on prom night." She said as she smiled down at me.
"Maybe." I said as I sat up slowly, put my back against the headboard and pulled the covers up some.
Next, she reached over, grabbed my tea and handed it to me.
I grabbed it from her and slowly brought the cup up towards my lips.
Once I took a sip, I could feel the warm liquid traveling down my chest.
"Caiya, I can't believe that you took all of these hours keeping this away from me. A little boy saying no to you about going to prom? I thought that it was something far worse." She asked as she looked at me and lightly laughed.
I shrugged my shoulders and looked down into the tea cup. The peppermint fumes traveled up my nose and gave me a cooling sensation.
Before I could say anything, her phone started to ring and she reached for it.
I continued to stare down into my tea.
