CIYLE's POINT OF VIEW

As I was in a rush to tie my shoelaces on my basketball shoes, I knew that coach was soon to get onto me about being late. However, it wasn't my fault. There was a change of plans and Dad had to rush me over to the community center where our AAU practice's were held.

"Grant, if you don't hurry up, boy! Spend one more second on that loop and I'm gonna make you run until I feel like you've had enough. And I don't feel like you would have enough until the end of practice, boy. So, come on. Your team is waiting!" Coach yelled at me as he ordered the other boys to stretch.

Finally finishing my first loop, I jumped up and wiped the bottom of my shoes.

"I'm ready, Coach!" I told him as I jumped up and down a few times. "Want me to stretch now?" I asked him as I started walking over towards him.

"Come here, Grant..." He told me as he held a ball in his hand and then rested it on his side.

"Yes, sir?" I spoke up as I immediately started to tuck in my trail game Jersey for the night.

"What's been going on with you?" He asked me as I finally made it over towards him.

Looking into his tense eyes, I gently shook my head at him. "Nothing, sir. My Dad was just late at picking me up from school and I don't know why..."

"I know because your Dad told me. The thing is, you didn't even wanna come join us tonight because apparently, you didn't wanna be apart of this team anymore..." He brought up to me. He stared at my face and that's when I could feel sweat forming on my forehead. It was already hot in this gym but he made me feel even more uncomfortably hot. "Is that true?" He added.

I hesitated but I knew that if I lied, I would have to run. "Yes, sir. I just didn't think that ball was a route for me anymore, sir."

"Grant, this team depends on you, boy. I know some of these dudes aren't cool but you need to keep your head straight, aight? Be prepared and focus on the game. You got a girlfriend?"

"No, sir. I'm not interested in dating right now," I told him as I looked over at the guys and hoped that they didn't hear me.

"Oh, well- that's good. Keep your priorities straight. You'll be in the 9th grade soon and I feel like you would be a good asset to this team again next year. So, focus, boy," Coach reminded me as he placed his hand on my shoulder. "Now, give me six laps and then we will start this game. Go," He told me.

I huffed underneath my breath and turned around to prepare myself for these laps. The guys looked at me but I didn't care. This entire basketball team is messed up and I didn't wanna be apart of it.

As I started running around the court, I tried my best to take coaches advice. Then again, I got tired of basketball long ago. Playing it on a video game is one thing but actually playing it in real life is another.
