Hey guys! So this was a fun chapter to write. Family reunions can be....interesting, to say the least. Anyway here's the new chapter!
-Rose's POV-
"Marco? Where did Star go?" I asked him, looking around. Our parents had us come home for the annual family reunion picnic and we brought Marco along to help us get through it this year. Once again, Star and I were stuck at the kids table, but I realized that's Star had disappeared again.
Marco shrugged his shoulders and just then we heard, "Check out this girl sitting at the grown-up table!"
We both looked and saw Star, standing on what was suppose to be a dinner tray for everybody at the table. The entire family stared and I groaned, slamming my head on my plate.
Star......that's not going to work.
-Time skip-
"We're too old to be sitting at this kids table," Star grumbled.
"Well, we wouldn't be sitting here had you not done what you just did now," I snapped. Star rolled her eyes and said, "It was a full proof plan!"
"Yeah, and you somehow still got stuck here."
"Guys guys," Marco said, smiling. "Look on the bright side, we get all the Mewni corn we want. It's so good!"
He then leaned over to one of my cousins and said, "My man here knows what I'm talking about. Right, hungry buddy?"
The little two year old spat his food in Marco's face. He blinked and groaned, wiping the spat up corn off his face. Star picked up one of the goblets, but it had a little sippy cup lid on it.
"I mean really? Sippy goblets," she said, holding the cup. Our three year old cousin, that was sitting next to Star, started playing with her food. Corn bits started flying into Star's hair and I saw her eye twitch. She raised her wand and I saw that it was glowing green and small bits of electricity started sparking off of it. I felt my eyes grow warm and panicked, grabbing Star's wand arm and pulling it back.
"Star, please chill," I said, feeling the warmth in my eyes fade. "Your magic effects me too, remember?"
"Sorry," she grumbled. Marco looked between us and asked, "What's the big deal?"
"All the fun is happening over there!" Star said, gesturing to the grown up table. As she said this, I could see the tension building up between mom's side of the family and between Dad's side of the family.
"Oh no," I said, gripping my chair and sinking as low as I can behind it for cover. Star, on the other hand, was biting her chair and staring at the table with excitement.
"What?" Marco asked, looking at us and at the grown up table.
"Grown up stuff," Star said, her voice low and excited. I lowered Marco's head and said, "You might want to duck."
The table seem to explode with arguments and fighting. Corn flew everywhere and a corn cob flew over Marco's head. I caught the cob and threw it back, adding to the arguments at the table.
Mom stood up and said, "There's no need for any of this, I just want e—"
Grandma Etheria shouted at Dad's side of the table, "You Johansens spoiled my appetite like you spoiled the Butterfly family tree!"
The arguing rose up again, even louder then before and mom stood where she was, looking annoyed. She then said above the noise, "Oh here now, let's put a stop to this. Tut-tut."
Dad jumped up on the table and pointed a finger at one of Mom's relatives, shouting, "Your neck ruffles are choking off the oxygen to your brain!"
I stifled a laugh and cleared my throats when mom sent a glare my way. "River!" She shouted. Dad seemed to realize what he was doing and said, "Now, now. There's no need for all this back and forth about who's better than who. We're all royalty, as you know. There is a way we can settle this petty dispute like the civilized people we are. With-"
At this, he pulled out a blue flag and I smiled as he shouted, "Flags!"
Star and I pulled out our own flags, hers being pink and mine being green. "Flags!" We shouted, growing excited.
"Oh dear," mom said, face palming. The entire adult table moved and Star got up from the kids table, jumping excitedly.
"Come on guys!" She said, raising her flag high. "Let's play!"
"How do you even play this?" Marco asked, looking at me for an answer. I smiled and said, "All you have to do is put your flag at the top of the hill."
Marco looked at a smaller hill next to the one I meant and said, "Ooooooh! Like King of the Hill! I rock at that game!"
"Not that hill," I said. I took Marco's face in my hands and turned his head slightly to the left, showing him the much larger and more dangerous looking hill. "That hill," I said, letting go of Marco's head.
"Oooooooh," Marco responded. Star jumped and said, "And the winner gets to look down on everyone else for a whole year. I am so ready for this!"
Star started to run but bumped into our mom. Mom took Star's flag from her and said, "No way."
I quickly hid mine behind my back before mom could take it. She walked past me and kept walking until Star said, "Heeeey. That's my flag!"
"You can have it back after the match, but you won't be playing Flags today," she responded, looking at Star.
"Why not? You played Flags when you were my age."
"I did a lot of things you won't be doing." Star growled and I felt a bit of warmth behind my eyes. I glanced at her wand noticed it was glowing green again. Since when did Star start getting mad so easily?
"I know it's boring to be the oldest at the kids' table, but you're not ready to be the youngest at the adults' table. Now go and help your little cousins chew their corn," Mom said, turning away from us and leaving.
Star curled her hand into a fist and clenched her wand tightly. I placed a hand on her shoulder, trying to calm her down.
"We'll show her," I said, holding up my flag. "We can play this game, and we will win. Come on, Marco. You're on Team Rose."
"Not that I don't mind being on Team Rose," Marco said. "But you heard your mom. We're supposed to stay at the kids' table."
I looked at the kids table, seeing all of the corn pieces lying on the kids plates. I smiled and looked at Star, who also had the same idea.
"Don't you worry," Star said, holding up her wand. "We'll be sitting at the kids' table."
-Time skip-
We sneaked among the line of adults, trying not to be seen by mom. We poked our heads through a few of the legs of some of the adults, trying to stay low.
"So if both sides of your family are playing against each other. Whose side are we on?" Marco asked.
"Duh, Our side," Star said, as if it was obvious.
"Here's to another spirited game of Flags. Uh, let us not have a repeat of last year's unfortunateness," Manfred, the servant who was the referee this year, said.
"What happened last year?" Marco asked, looking at me with worry.
"Just before he reached the peak, Uncle Lump got his body cut off," I said, sighing sadly.
"What?!"
"Relax. He's fine. He's right over there," Star said. She pointed into the direction of where a horse with our uncle's head attached to it. He waved a flag in his mouth and neighed.
"I think he likes it better this way," Star said. I shivered at the sight of my uncle. I couldn't look at him the same way again. Manfred raised pistol into the air and said, "Ready, set, flags!"
He shot the blank and the entire line of adults rushed up the hill, charging and yelling. Our group wasn't that far behind and I smiled as I felt the rush of excitement.
This game was on and we were going to win.
........
Will they win? Hope you guys enjoyed this chapter and I'll see you guys in the next chapter! :)
