When your mom can't even walk straight, you can't understand what she is saying, and she can't keep her eyes open are you really going to believe her when she says that it is just her medicine?

Momma thought we were oblivious to her addiction and her use of alcohol, but we weren't. We knew the real reason she couldn't walk straight. We knew why she wasn't able to make a single word sound right. We knew the reason she couldn't keep her eyes open and it wasn't because of her "medicine".

It was because she had mixed various kinds of drugs with the vodka she kept in the freezer. Momma mixed what people like to call "uppers" and "downers" all the time. It was nothing new to us.

Momma was so messed up when she was on this stuff. She couldn't even drive on the right side of the road. I had to drive sometimes. I couldn't keep her awake by talking. She couldn't even hold her end of the conversation. Her eyes kept closing and she kept swerving all over the road. I made her pull over. I had my permit with me so I could drive us home. I just thought: what did she take this time?

Her eyes couldn't stay open. Her words didn't make sense when she attempted to talk to me. I hated it when she was like that. She was always saying that she was just tired or she had just taken her medicine. Her medicine was probably a lot of prescription drugs or it was the pot she smoked earlier.
