Now 10-years-old, Nicolette had woken up earlier than everyone else in the house and got ready for school, which she usually drove in with Quincy and Melissa, her foster family. She got her school uniform on and grabbed her bag, knowing that it really didn't have her school books in it, but it did have something really important.
She swung her bag over her shoulder and left her room, carefully heading downstairs and quietly went over to the kitchen, taping up her note to the fridge that said she caught the bus today. But right before she made it to the door, someone spoke up from the bottom of the stairs. "Where do you think you're going?"
Nick froze, closing her eyes briefly, before she turned around and smiled as Marcel walked towards her. "I- uh, I wanted to catch the bus today."
Marcel, her foster dad, looked over her before nodding. "Alright, Nick, but when you get home, we all still need to have a talk about what happened the other day." She nodded and he gave her a kiss on top her head as a goodbye, before letting her leave.
Nick waved at him from the door, before heading down the driveway and jogging down the sidewalk, running over to her usual bus stop. But as the big yellow bus showed up, Nick went around it instead and got into the yellow cab that she had called before leaving her room.
The girl gave the driver the address that her and her best friend, Jeremy, had found just the night before. And as he began driving the two hours it'd take to get to Malibu, California from where she lived.
She sat in the back seat, nervously playing with the tie around her neck as she anxiously bit her bottom lip and tapped her foot against the floor of the vehicle. Nick looked out the window and watched the scenes pass by, as her hand then went from her tie, to the two necklaces that were hiding under her white button up shirt. One of which was the golden sun that she never took off, and the other was the key.
The very key that had gotten her to this point.
She was lucky that her mother's Will had finally gotten to her, which allowed the social worker who'd had her case since she was 6, and went through the whole bringing her to America when she was only 8 with her, to finally give it to her. Lorelai Mendes had left one envelope in her name, which seemed like it wasn't much, but when Nick had finally opened it and found a key, she had also found that her mother had left her a whole storage unit of stuff.
But at the moment, the only thing that had been relevant in the storage unit, had been her mother's diaries from when she was pregnant. Lorelai had documented everything that happened before her pregnancy- that she had gone to California to do her surgical internship and half her residency, and apparently had met a man.
That said man had chased after Lorelai, who kept saying 'no' to a dinner or whatever. It had been a cute but very short lived love story where the guy chases after the girl he found so intriguing, before finding that she couldn't be bought with money, and became even more interested when she wasn't just a pretty face. But after a year, she finally said yes, and the two went out for a couple months. Until Lorelai found out that he had cheated on her after getting drunk at some party, and that same night that she had decided to end things, she had also found out she was pregnant.
