Nicolette Dawn Mendes grew up in Havana, Cuba with her mother until she turned five.
The morning of the little girl's birthday, Lorelai got called into work at 4 am, because of an emergency. She worked at a hospital after getting her medical degree in Malibu. Lorelai Mendes had always and will always be there for her daughter, which is something she swore to when she first held her babygirl in her arms. Her daughter was everything to her, the most important thing in her life.
But the second important thing in her life, was her work. Because she had always wanted to help people. And being a pediatric surgeon was the best thing she could do, and her second most accomplished thing.
The young single mother woke up to a call saying that she was needed for a high profile emergency surgery on a 7-year-old little boy, who was in a questionable accident, but because of his last name, nobody was gonna question it. Nobody except for Lorelai.
By the time she got done with making sure the little boy was okay and stable, it was about the time that Letty was going to wake up. But instead of going home to greet her little girl, she ended up calling up her best friend, allowing Lorelai to research what actually happened. Adding this patient to the rest that she had been looking into, most of which were deceased, allowing her to believe that this was different than the others.
Meanwhile, miles away, 5-year-old Letty had woken up to waffles and orange juice (which was unique because that was usually a stretch because of the money struggle) but then she saw Christopher, which was her mother's best friend, and sort of like the father figure in her life.
Also someone who would definitely do something like this for them, especially since this was a small thing compared to helping out with the house bills sometimes when things were extra tough that month.
"Chrissy!" Letty exclaimed excitedly as she rushed towards the dirty blonde haired man with green eyes, who smiled at the little girl and picked her up when she jumped into his arms, and using English like her mother taught her because he didn't completely know Spanish. Chris chuckled at the nickname as he placed her on his hip and turned to grab a little box from a paper bag, "Good morning, birthday girl."
"Is that a present?" She asked, reaching for it, but he just laughed and pulled it out of reach. "Nuh-uh. Not until you finish your food." Then he sat her down in front of the plate, before going over to grab his plate, while setting down the gift.
It wasn't until after the food and after helping pick up the dishes to put them in the sink, did Letty pull at his sleeve. "Where's mommy?"
"Oh, uh, she's..." Chris mumbled, glancing to his phone, hoping to get a message saying that she was on her way, but he didn't. He sighed, putting his phone away and picking up the little girl, placing her on the counter. "Well, little sunshine, she got called into work earlier. But I'm sure she'll be back later, so, in the mean time, you get to hangout with me."
