"Yano shiny, I got my name by defeating five super battle droids with my bare hands." I could hear Fives spinning tall tales with some new recruits as I rounded the corner.
"That's awesome. Did your general give you that name?" The shiny asked.
"How about you ask him his CT number recruit?" I laughed as I walked over. The two straightened up and saluted me.
"General." They greeted simultaneously.
"Go ahead newbie. Ask him." I grinned.
"My number isn't important, I have a name." Fives spoke before anyone could ask him.
"Of course. Who am I to interrupt your story. Go ahead trooper. I'm sure I recall this battle too."
"Uh. I Uh. Well that was the end of the story, general. Oh look is that the captain?" I turned in the direction he was pointing in but there was no one there. When I looked back Fives was gone.
"Is that really How he got his name?" The new recruit asked.
"Yeah." I smiled before walking away.
In reality I was waiting for the Captain to get back from a mission with General Skywalker it was important and highly dangerous.
I walked down the corridor and entered the mess hall sitting opposite Anakin's padawan. She quickly stood up. "Master (y/n)." She greeted.
"Sit down young one." I forced a smile.
"I know you're worried about Rex." She said out of nowhere.
"Yeah..." I sighed, "a-and Anakin and Master Kenobi." I added quickly. "We should've heard back by now. It's concerning. Perhaps I should go after them." I thought aloud.
"Master (y/n) you allow your feelings to cloud your judgement." A voice spoke behind me. It was my own master.
"Master Fisto!" I smiled turning around.
"Skywalker and Master Kenobi are excellent Jedi and Captain Rex is a brilliant soldier. They will do just fine." He placed a reassuring hand upon my shoulder. "Your attachment to the clone Captain is dangerous young one."
"As Jedi aren't we taught to be kind, compassionate? Isn't showing someone love and affection just a form of that?"
"I'll put it this way?" He added, "could you let the Captain die if the need arose? If it meant keeping the peace?"
"If it was his time I would let him go."
"How would you know if was his time?"
"The force and my trust within it, would guide me." I smiled. Just as the three of us began to talk a clone I immediately recognised came running up to us.
"General (y/n). You need to come with me." He spoke.
"Kix? Tell me he's okay."
"Come with me please general." I followed him to med bay to find Captain Rex floating unconscious in a Bacta tank.
"What happened?" I asked, my hand pressed against the cold glass.
"Ambush." I heard Kenobi's voice behind me. "We had worked our way into peace talks with the leader of the planet and I thought we'd made progress. They recognised Jedi as peacekeepers but when they found out who and what Rex was they all turned on him saying that bringing a warrior was a show of mistrust. Rex wasn't in his armour, we left it in the ship to show we weren't there for war. He was beaten, stabbed and then shot at as Anakin carried him out." He explained.  I turned to Kix.
"Will He Be Okay?" I asked.
"I can leave him in Bacta over night but after that I have to take him out. We are running dangerously low on supplies of the stuff as it is." He shrugged, "overnight in this should heal his external injuries but he'll have to heal normally for the rest. I'll do what I can, but he won't like it."
"Thanks Kix." I smiled, sitting on the floor next to the Bacta tank.
"General. General y/n." I heard someone calling my name, gently shaking my shoulder. I looked up to see Kix.
"Ah. Sorry. I was just Uh, meditating." I mumbled, standing up and following him as Rex was moved to a regular hospital bed.
"He should wake up in a few hours. I can call you when he does, you looked like you needed rest after your... meditation." Kix smiled.
"No. I will wait." I yawned. I sat in a chair next to the captain's bed.
Again I must've fallen asleep as the next thing I knew someone was shaking my shoulder. When I looked up I recognised Anakin. "General Skywalker." I stood up, greeting my fellow Jedi.
"How's he doing?" He asked, looking at the sleeping man before us.
"He's okay. He hasn't woken up yet but from what I can tell he's doing well." I shrugged. I took the clone's hand in mine, closing my eyes. "I can feel him, the way the force moves around him and not through him. I know he'll be okay. I'm not leaving until he wakes up though."
"It's good to know I have someone watching over me, general." I heard a quiet voice beside me.
"Rex!" Anakin and I exclaimed. "Thank the maker you're awake." I smiled.
"How long was I out for?" Rex asked, trying to sit up but collapsing in pain.
"Lay down Rex," Anakin ordered, "you've been out for two days, one of which you spent in Bacta. You'll have to stay here for a few days to fully heal."
"B-but. My men, sir, I have to serve with them."
"No. You have to stay here. Your men will be fine under my command." Anakin reassured.
"That's a matter of opinion." I muttered.
"Besides, I think you're in good hands here." He grinned. "See you around general."
"Bye Anakin." I waved, turning back to Rex. "I was so worried." I whispered, pressing our foreheads together.
"This is what I was created for. To fight and one day die for the republic." He sighed, placing a hand on the side of my face. "You will have to let me go one day."
"No. There I said it. No. This rule of no attachment is stupid. I understood it when Master Fisto taught me, I thought it was easy. It was there to keep us neutral, perfect peacekeepers, if we're unattached we can't take sides. That was before, the world has changed. We are part of the military. We are warriors now, not peacekeepers, we have chosen a side so why can't I form an attachment?" I cried, "Why can't I hold on to the one thing that has made me feel complete? Dream of what can happen after this war is done?"
"Some say we will be terminated once the war is done." Rex shrugged, "If the galaxy is at peace What use is an army of men who are only ever taught how to fight?"
"Then we'll run." I suggested. "We'll Go somewhere the republic won't find us. Like your brother. Cut Lawquane." His eyes widened.
"How do you.. I never told anyone about that?"
"You talk in your sleep Rex. A lot." I laughed. "If that's the life you dream of then I would gladly go with you. Leave the order, all you need do is say the word." I sighed, gently caressing the side of his face.
"I couldn't ask you to do that. The order is like your family."
"It would be nothing, compared to the family I could start with you." I smiled, "that is what I want when this war is over. No more GAR. No more Jedi order. Just the two of us and whatever comes our way."
"Your optimism amazes me." He smiled sadly, "okay. If we both make it out of this alive, we go. Somewhere in the outer rim."
"We'll make it." I laced his fingers with mine. "I promise. We have motive enough to get through this war."
