How it happened I don't know, he usually has such control. Wrong place wrong time. We were fighting homunculi, I was about to finish one off when they caught me with a cheap shot I staggered backwards, turning slightly but also walking into the flames of the Colonel. They only grazed my face but the intense heat was enough to burn and blind me almost instantaneously. I collapsed to the ground in pain from the searing heat on my face, I thought I would pass out from the pain alone.
Through the pain I could hear a muffled voice. Most likely the homunculi taunting the Colonel. Suddenly silence. I'm dead. I've passed out. Thoughts running through my head.
"Y/N! Y/N!" That's the corporal. "I'm so sorry." I could feel his hands around my face, the scent of burning flesh filled the room. He'd finished them off. I lay curled up in pain and eventually passed out.
Time skip.
I woke up.. Or did I? All I see is black. My eyes are open but I see nothing. I sit bolt upright. A hand placed on my shoulder, I jumped away. "No. Calm down. It's just me. You're in the hospital back in Central." A calm deep voice spoke. I moved further away. It was the colonel the burnt me. It was an accident, but fire can be unpredictable.
"Sir, what happened. I-I can't see." I raised my hand to my face, the skin was still raw and painful to the touch. "Surely medical alchemists can heal me."
"They've tried." His voice was monotonous, sad.
"Sir. So you're saying I'll... I'll never see again..." We sat in silence. "I'll have to retire then won't I? I can't fight as an alchemist without my sight. I can't do a desk job, I can no longer read." I spoke tears forming in my eyes. "There's nothing left for me." I turned to sit on the edge of the bed and stood up. Holding my hands out in front of me to feel for any obstacles. "Now, if you'd hand me my jacket, I'll be on my way. Thank you." Instead of finding my jacket my hand met another.
"You are not going anywhere. Second Lieutenant Y/N L/N. If I am correct, you haven't a home to go to."
"Sir please."
"No one has ever seen you with any form of family, nor do they ever see you in your personal time." He stated.
"They've seen me. They just don't recognise me. Surprising what a wig can do. In any personal time I work as a waitress, in return I stay in the inn. Now I can't even do that." I leant into the chest of the colonel, crying. "I have nothing. I can't work. I have no where to live and I can't be a soldier any more." I felt a hand on my back, gently rubbing in a soothing manor. I wrapped my arms around him, I don't care that I'm not allowed to. I'm his subordinate. But right now all I needed was to be hugged.
"You will stay with me. I will look after you." He spoke.
"Sir. I can't let you do that. Look at me. I'm just going to be a burden." I said, pulling myself away from him. Pulling myself out of the only true comfort I had felt in years.
"For one. This was my doing. I was the one who burnt you. Secondly. It would allow me to know you better. I can help you with your alchemy, so you can still fight without the use of sight."
"Sir. Like yours, my alchemy is sight driven, on pinpoint accuracy. I have to see the pathway to my opponent through which my alchemy can travel."
"Sight isn't your only sense Lieutenant." He took my hand and held it tight. "You are a soldier. You are a fighter. I've seen you get thrown around by a hommunculai and get back up. I know you wont let this blindness get the best of you. I will take care of you and you will be strong again." No wonder this man was a colonel, he could inspire an entire army if he spoke this way to everyone.Time skip.
"I know you can do it. listen to the sound of my voice, listen to your surroundings and then strike." I would have never believed that I could become so close to the colonel. since becoming blind my hearing has improved dramatically. As he said I focused Listening to his voice, thinking where he was and what was around me. I clapped my hands together and outstreatched my arms in the direction I heard his voice. I invisioned the water molicules in the air coming together in a pathway, grouping to form their solid state. Then i heard clapping from beside me. "see, i told you you could do it." He hung an arm around my shoulders.
"I can never rejoin the military though can I?" I laughed. "You, Sir. Are not meant to be in a relationship with your subordinate." He thought for a while.
"There is a way. You used to be able to pass off as a completely different person in your personal time. So, how about you turn it around disguise yourself in the military. I will formally dismiss you with blindness and you can come back as someone else. That way i wont have to lose my most trusted subordinate and you get to keep your life in the military, and we both get to keep each other." i though on the illegality of his suggestion, but what other option do I have if I want to keep the life I love?
"Ok. I'll do it Roy. I'll do it for us. But they'll see its me. I mean the huge scar, the blindness." I gestured to my face.
"The scar can be covered and people are born blind every day."
"You could lose your career over this. What about becoming führer? That's been your goal ever since I've known you."
"People change. And you've changed me. I still want to become führer but if I do t get there I know I still have you."
"Colonel." I stood to attention and saluted him. "I will follow you to the ends of the earth." I heard him walk towards me, he took my hand, entwined his fingers within my own and held it at my side. With his other hand he lifted my chin.
"I'm never colonel to you."
"Roy." I breathed.
"Yeh." I could hear the smile on his voice. He leant closer still.
"I-I love you Roy."
"That's all I needed to hear." He closed the gap, his lips meeting mine. As expected he was warm, but surprisingly soft. Being such a lady's man you'd expect him to go straight for whatever he wanted but no. I wrapped my arms around his neck. He pulled back resting his forehead on mine.
"I wish I could see your eyes." I said, my eyes still shut. I opened them every time I do I hope for a miracle. But alas still blackness greeted me.
"I can see yours." He stated.
"But mine are awful and scarred. Yours, I remember them well. Black, like onyx. Beautiful. If I could see one more thing. That's all I'd want to see. Your eyes looking into mine."
"One day, I'm still determined to get you your sight back. But first. I think we should go inside and rest."
"Yeh. Okay."Ugh it's so shit. Oh well. It's Roy. Just love him. ☺️
