Finally home from uni for Christmas. I love uni don't get me wrong but it's never home. However apparently this time it's different. My mother's friend's son is staying as his folks are away on urgent business. All I know is he is from Austria and he's a musician. Sounds alright.
Both my parents are at work until this afternoon so I guess this Austrian guy is here somewhere. I drag my case up the stairs hitting every step on my ascent. As I reached what was my old room I could hear music. Piano music. Sweet, calming melodies played with the highest finesse. I slowly opened the door. The person playing, obviously the guy my mum took in, was facing away from me.
From what I could see he had deep brown, somewhat wavey hair with one strand standing up in a curl from the parting at the front, he also wore a long navy jacket.
I walked around and leant on the piano in front of him. "Excuse me?" He opened his eyes and looked up at me. Wide violet eyes gazed into mine, through half rimmed glasses. He was attractive. I'll give him that. He leant to his right to stop the rhythmic ticking of his metronome. "You wouldn't happen to be mum's friend's son would you?"
"Ja." He nodded. Oh dear, does he not speak English? Worry must've been plastered over my face as he continued. "Vhere are mein manners? I'm Roderich, Roderich Edelstein. I hope jou had a pleasant journey home."
"Yes thank you. I hope I'm not disturbing anything. You play so beautifully."
"Danke. Vould jou like me to leave so you can unpack?" He asked standing up. Oh. He was taller than I thought. Under the coat he appeared to be wearing a white shirt with a cravat around the collar.
"Oh no. Don't stop on my account. Please. Continue. Pretend I'm not here." He nodded and took his seat again and continued to play as I unpacked my things, placing them back into my drawers. I quickly recognised the tune of the song he played, an old English wartime song. Subconsiously I sang along. "Keep the Home-fires burning, While your hearts are yearning, Though your lads are far away They dream of Home; There's a silver lining, Through the dark cloud shining, Turn the dark cloud inside out, Till the boys come Home." I sung quietly as he played.
"Jou sing very vell."
"What? Oh that... Haha. Mum made me join the local choir and that was something we had to sing." I spoke blushing, hiding my face in my university hoodie. "I usually hate singing in front of people... Your playing just puts me at ease. I guess because it comes so naturally from you it makes my voice just come out of me... If that makes sense."
"Music has great power. To move people. To bring them together." He smiled.
"Yano what Roderich? You're right. And I think this is going to be the start of a great friendship." I smiled at the handsome Austrian "and who knows where that'll take us eh?"
Yeh it's short but it's 1:00am. Cut me some slack. I can't sleep and I had an Austria craving that needed to be fulfilled. Haha. And this little idea just popped into my head. I also have an idea for a second part. So stay tuned.
