Why was I born this way? Did my parents upset the gods? Maybe I am being punished for something I did in a previous life. Whatever it was I'm stuck this way. A winged freak. I was stolen from my parents at the age of 5 and placed in a travelling circus. That was 15 years ago. 15 years in a cage, cramped to the point where I can't even spread my wings. I've been chained, whipped, beaten, you name it it's probably happened. I am made to wear clothes no respectable woman would wear, they're revealing and demeaning. When I am released from my cage to dance for the paying guests my wings are bound with rope, The tips tied to my ankles so I cannot spread them and fly away. Pointless really, for I don't even know how to fly.
I heard whisper of a grand performance today. One where some exhibits have the chance to be bought. Out of my cage I see that we are in Memphis but why is it so special, we have performed here before. I only realised who our audience would be when we did not stop at the palace gates.
I held onto the bars of the cage and watched in awe of the beautiful courtyard we were going through. Pillars of white limestone all trimmed with gold, the number of pools filled with lilies and water orchids. Large jars of incense providing the most wonderful aroma. My admiration was broken when a young woman stood in front of the procession. "I have been sent by his majesty to welcome you, and to inform you that you may have as many servants as you wish to provide clean clothes, food and water, and to aid you all in any way." She bowed slightly and walked away, her eyes meeting mine for a split second before she ran behind some curtains.
After being cleaned and dressed we were given a large room to all sleep in, as per usual someone forgot to open the cage in which I only had room to stand. I heard voices approaching, the serving girl from before. "I swear. It was like looking into the eyes of Horus himself. Big golden eyes."
"But you tell me it was a girl." A mans voice spoke.
"Yes but she has falcon's wings. She's beautiful." Two heads peered around one of the columns. The girl and a handsome young man wearing a hooded cloak. "Why isn't she asleep?" She asked. I answered her question by gently rattling the bars and trying to sit down.
"She can't even lay down." The man spoke before striding over to my cage and unbolting the door. I pressed myself to the back corner not that it got me much further away from him. He stretched out his hand towards me, I gently touched only his fingertips as he lead me out of the cage. I'm not allowed to touch anyone. That's a rule they made for me. That way I can't form any kind of attachment. Like I'm some kind of animal. Beside one of the ponds was a pile of pillows, they looked very comfortable and very expensive. I stepped back out of his grasp and shook my head. I could never sleep on something so lavish. He took my hand again pulling me towards the inviting sleeping area. His hands were soft and warm. Not what I'd expect from a servant, but what would I know? I carefully laid down, trying to spread my wings over my body but recoiling in pain due to the ropes tethering them to my ankles. Despite the pain I quickly fell asleep, exhaustion taking over.
I was woken up by being grabbed by my left wing, hauled into a standing position. It was then that I noticed my wings were no longer bound to me. I stretched, the bones creaking and the muscles tightening but it was pleasant to finally have a good stretch. This was short lived however, I was punched in the stomach, causing me to collapse onto the floor. I was beaten, punished, for something I didn't do, for sleeping, for that serving boy cutting the ropes that held me. That's what I get for trusting someone else. This time, my wings were tied close to my back, unbearably close. I could feel small bones were broken and I was bleeding from small cuts all over my body. Just as we were about to perform I was pulled aside "if you mess anything up I can ensure you with Horus as my witness this will be your last performance." He let go of me and pushed me towards the entrance. He stepped in before me and addressed our audience. "I am deeply honoured to be able to present to you our show's pride and joy. A banished child of Horus. Dancing for your pleasure my pharaoh." He bowed revealing me in the doorway.
As the music began I started my dance. It was much harder due to my new injuries and now not being able to balance as my wings were so tightly bound. I couldn't help it, I stumbled and fell right at the feet of the pharaoh. He immediately rose from his throne, I scurried back, remaining on my knees, begging for forgiveness. "My lord. Please. Allow me to try again. It will not happen again. I am sorry for disappointing you." I dared to glance up only to see a hand extended to me.
"Step back my lord. She's dangerous." My handler stepped between myself and the young king. "And she's right. It will NOT happen again." He ordered me to be taken out, as I was dragged away a voice rang through the large chamber.
"Wait." It was a commanding voice that came from the pharaoh himself. "I'll take her. Name your price and I'll take her." He stated.
"I couldn't. She's our prized performer." My handler smiled. Yeh. I make him too much money.
"Let me make this clear." The pharaoh spoke, standing toe to toe with my handler. "I am the son of Ra in human form. What I say shall become law. If I desire the girl I shall have her." He stated. I was pushed forwards so I once again knelt at his feet. A pair of soft hands helped me up.
"Yes my lord. I hope she pleases you." My handler spoke, his voice laced with resent and bitterness.
"I'm sure she will." He smiled, taking my hands in his. Why is this feeling so familiar? The serving boy. He came to see me. The pharaoh himself. "Guards." He beckoned them over. "Release her bindings and escort our guests out." The ropes around me were cut and once again I stretched my wings out. As the rest of the circus were lead out the handler turned back.
"She is of no use to you anyway. Her spirit was broken long ago." He laughed before walking out.
The pharaoh beckoned over a serving girl, the same one from before. I backed away instinctively.
"It's okay. No harm shall come to you." He spoke allowing the girl to take me away to a beautiful bathroom. She helped me out of my clothes and into the warm waters. They were full of scented oils and perfumes.
"Did this happen often?" She asked as she helped me wash, breaking the silence. I just nodded. "Don't talk much do you?"
"I-" my voice was hoarse I coughed a few times trying to regain my ability speak. "I was never a-allowed to talk." I shrugged.
"It's okay. You're free now." She stated helping me out of the water.
"Am I? Why has the pharaoh asked to keep me?" I asked as she assisted in cleaning and dressing my wounds.
"He sees you as a gift from the gods." She smiled. "You are a child of Horus are you not?"
"I was always told I was banished." I shrugged, "why else would he leave me in that torture?"
"Maybe it was a test. You're here, you're alive are you not?" She has a point. She helped me into some clothes and walked me back to the throne room.
"Let us be." The pharaoh ordered walking over to me. I dropped to my knees in front of him. "There's no need for that." He took my hands and pulled me up to stand. "When I was told the child of a god had graced the walls of my palace I knew I couldn't leave you with those people. After seeing how they treated such a pure individual I would not allow them to leave with you. Here you shall be treated as the goddess you were born to be." He smiled.
"Thank you my lord."
A year later.
I sat perched in one of the large trees overlooking the gardens, straightening out my armour as I watched over this beautiful land. I watched as Ra was reborn over the horizon and descended from my perch, dipping my toes into the little pond as I passed it, down onto the soft grass. "Well well Well. If it isn't my guardian of the skies." I heard Ahkmenrah's voice echoing off the palace walls as he approached.
"My king." I smiled. "The sun shines all the brighter when you are bathed in its light." I bowed my head before embracing the young king.
"I request you join me for dinner." He smiled, taking my hand and pressing the knuckles to his lips. "I have an important proposition for you."
"Of course my lord. I look forward to it." I nodded before taking off, surveying the skies.
After a while of flying I returned to the palace to bathe assisted by the girl who is now my servant, Zia. She was the one who I first met and became close friends with. "Ahkmen has another proposition for me." I stated as she helped me into my formal attire. "No doubt another task he has for me." I smiled. "A year is all that has passed since I was part of that circus. I couldn't fly, I could barely speak and was scared of everything. Now look at me."
"Yeh you're the right hand woman to our pharaoh."
"Oh I wouldn't go that far. I'm a personal guard. That is all." I blushed.
"Who is permitted to call him by name."
"I'm sure many a permitted to." I shrugged, pulling on the golden bands on my arms.
"Whom he also gives gifts to." She smiled, placing a small golden circlet around my head.
"I suppose he just pitties me because of my past." I turned to the door, "have the night off. I can do the rest tonight alone." I stated before exiting my chambers for the great hall.
Once there I stooped into a low bow in front of my king. "Come with me." He smiled, walking towards the balcony. I followed close behind, he leant on the wall. "Beautiful isn't it?" He sighed. You could see right out to the Nile and beyond, the town and farmland stretching down to its banks. The sun was high in the sky casting light and warmth over the entire kingdom.
"That it is my king." I breathed a response.
"I want to share it with you." He stated, turning to face me, placing his hand on my cheek. "My gift from the gods." He smiled.
"I'm not worthy my king. I do not deserve your affections." I stepped back. "I-I can't." I made to take off but he held onto my hand. "Please. You've already done too much for me, helping me out of my old life, giving me this job. You've given me a home and now this..." I trailed off. My heart said yes, it said run over and never let go of this amazing man. However, my head said no, I knew a person of my standing was in no way able to wed a pharaoh. He should take a noble, a Priestess, someone of high standing but not me, a guard.
"Please." That smile, those eyes, it was too much to resist.
"Okay." I smiled. It took a moment to sink in but he quickly wrapped his arms around me.
"I have one condition." He smiled, resting his forehead on mine. "Enough with the 'Pharaoh' and 'my king' just Ahk will do." He sighed with contentment "I shall make the announcement tomorrow but today is ours to keep. What would you like to do?" I pulled the young Pharaoh down by his collar and wrapped my wings around us so no one could see. I pressed my lips to his, capturing him in a kiss. His arms wrapped around my waist pulling me closer still.
"I'm sure your chambers will suffice." I smiled.
"Anything you desire my goddess."
I've come from nothing to having everything. I've fallen in love with the son of Ra, and he loves me back. I've been freed to stretch my wings and fly, and have been offered the world. I used to long for death, to know I'd be condemned by Anubis and my heart devoured. Now I never want this to end, and if it does I can pass into the afterlife happily now, in the knowledge that my king will be with me.
