After a long battle I was in the shower in Medic's en suit. It was a particularly bloody battle, both on their half and ours. I daren't think how many times I had to be healed myself just from rushing in to heal my team. I was covered in blood, both that of the enemy, my team, and my own. I had started going into the missions with the intentions of only healing but I soon learnt that they were vastly more violent than what I'd ever seen in my time in Overwatch. Eventually, after a lot of pestering by the team, who accepted me surprisingly well, I took one of Medic's spare bone saws, for personal protection especially in close quarters. Yes I still had my Caduceus blaster but when the opposition is up in your face it is exceptionally hard to kill them when you have to try and get a bulky gun between the two of you. Just as I stepped out of the shower an alarm sounded through the base. "Multiple Intruder alert!"
"You've got to be kidding me?!" I shouted, frustrated as hell, attracting the attention of medic across the room.
"Quickly Fräulein. We're going to need you." He placed my armour into my arms and walked towards the doors, peering out. He signaled for me to go into his room and change, "Schieße!" He cursed under his breath as I quickly changed and attached my wings and halo, I handed him a small communicator, picked up my Caduceus staff and made my way out of the med-bay. I headed to Spy's smoking room, the most defendable room on the base, he's got god knows how many little traps and triggers around that room. Inside was most of the team. They've never run from a fight. Ever. "What's got you lot so scared? It's the BLU's. Get out there wimps!" I shouted.
"It's not the BLU's Shiela." Sniper spoke up. "I've never seen anything like it." I thought for a moment until I heard Medic trying to negotiating for his life.
With him I heard Heavy, Engie and Pyro, he must've healed them on the way here.
"I ain't askin again, where is she?" An all too familiar voice spoke, that deep southern voice. I knew exactly who had broken in.
"I don't know. I've never seen a woman matching your description." Medic replied.
"That's a shame. Looks like..." As I reached the door I heard a line I had heard too many times. "It's high noon." I couldn't act quickly enough to stop it. All the men in the hallway dropped dead as the sound of gunshots filled my ears.
"No!" I ran to them. Respawn was offline, we don't use it while in the base, we don't need to. I had one option. Rapidly healing Scout, Sniper, Spy, Demo and Soldier in the smoking room I ran back out, please let this work, "heroes never die." It worked, the four staggered back to their feet. There was silence, the Overwatch agents staring at me, one in particular. I turned to face them. Reinhardt, Tracer, Junkrat, Genji and McCree. One looking more hurt at seeing me here than the others.
"Y/N." He breathed. He took a step forward to which I held out my hand.
"Don't come any closer!" I pulled Medic's syringe gun from him holding it aimed at my old team mates, "or I will use this!" I didn't even notice the tears streaming down my face. I took a step backwards as Medic put a comforting hand on my waist.
"Don't you touch her!" McCree yelled raising his gun. I stepped to the side, in front of my German doctor. He looked like I'd just shot him.
"What are you doing?" Tracer asked, grabbing my attention. My best friend, my room mate, stood stock still, she looked almost as hurt as Jesse.
"What have they done to you Darlin'? Come on. Come home." Jesse spoke, also crying. "I've been looking for you for a year Darlin'. I've been losin' my mind." He pleaded.
I laughed through my tears. "You worried about me? Sure." I looked up at him, he'd advanced towards me. "You left me for dead!" I screamed at him. "I was crying, screaming for me, you looked me in the eye, looked at the team then at me again before running off to the team! You made your choice!"
"I thought you were going to die, I was runnin' to respawn, to meet you so you wouldn't have to go it alone. When you didn't respawn I ran back. You were gone." He hung his head "Darlin' I-"
"-I'm not your Darlin' anymore! If I was you'd have remembered! We never left each other on the field alone. Dieing or not! You know I'm safe and alive now, isn't that enough? Go." I spoke more calmly.
"No. It's not enough. I - we all want you back." He gestured to the others who all nodded.
"Angela is worried sick. I miss you too love. It's not as fun without ya with us." Tracer spoke up.
"I can't leave guys. I belong here now." I could no longer look at Jesse. I couldn't bare it. I turned back to Medic. What happened next all happened so fast. McCree stormed past me grabbing Medic by his shirt and pinning him to the wall, his forearm to Medic's throat and his gun to his head.
"It's you! What have you done to her?! Was it some form of drug?! Torture?!" He shouted. I held out my hand and Spy threw me his gun which I held to the back of McCree's head.
"He did nothing." I answered calmly. "Nothing but show me compassion and look after me, funnily enough when I turned up here dieing he didn't turn his back on me."
"Do it." He spoke without moving.
"What?" I was almost caught off guard. He turned around releasing Medic who fell to the ground coughing and gasping for air. He stood so that the barrel of my gun was between his eyes.
"I said do it." His voice was flat. "Go on. You've killed me once today. Let's make it twice and make it final. Pull the trigger."
"You know I can't." His eyes showed a glimmer of hope, "but I can't come back either." I walked and helped up Medic. "Doesn't it make your job easier? No unnecessary distractions." I smiled slightly through the tears, as did he.
"Always one to make light of a poor situation." He laughed. "Alright I have two requests though." He stated, I nodded in response. "You don't make a stranger of yourself around the Overwatch base, you're still our friend." I nodded "and I get one more hug. Call it something to properly remember you by." Again I nodded and walked back to the cowboy, handing spy back his gun. I wrapped my arms around him, he was quick to respond, enveloping me in his arms as he always did. He birdied his face into the crook of my neck. Everything about him was exactly the same, the way he hugged, his scent, the way his beard tickled making me smile. All the same. I stepped back and he tipped his hat to me as I stood next to Medic. "Until we meet again ma'am." He turned to Medic. "Take care of her, or else you and I are going to have a problem." Medic just nodded still holding his throat in pain. As McCree walked out Tracer zipped past everyone else and hugged me.
"Don't forget to visit Okay?" She smiled.
"Couldn't forget anything do you Speedy Gonzales." I grinned. She beamed in response of my using my nickname for her. "See ya round Lena." I whispered as I hugged her back. With a quick goodbye from the others they left. I just pulled Medic's arm around my shoulder and helped him back to Med-bay. He watched me silently. Once there I sat him on the edge of his bed and handed him a glass of water. I took a look at his neck in complete silence and sat next to him. "You'll be okay. Maybe a little brushing. That's all." I spoke numbly.
"Who was he?" He questioned.
"Jesse McCree. Agent of Overwatch, an amazing shot. Fasted draw you'll ever see, one of the best gunmen I've ever known." I shrugged. "Before you ask, Yes I was with him. It was great, everything you could ask for." I smiled remembering what we once had, a tear falling from my eye, I turned to a rather upset Medic and quickly wiped my tear away and replaced it with a smile. "But that's all in the past. That part of my life is done. I have you now." I placed my fingers under his chin making him look up at me. "If I missed him that much and wanted what I had back, you think I would be sat here now? I've found something better than what I had. I've found you. My endearing madman." I smiled, placing a chaste kiss on his lips. He smiled down at me.
"You always surprise me mein kleiner Engel." He spoke, pulling me into a hug.
"Well. I try." I grinned, hugging him back.
3 yrs later.
I ran up to the door of the Overwatch base, pulling Medic along with me. I had visited alone a lot but today was special. I HAD to bring him with me.
Surprisingly I had also managed to talk Winston into an alliance between Overwatch and Reliable Excavation Demolition with me as the sole ambassador for both parties.
Today however was a social visit the others had demanded I bring Medic so they could meet him. Yeh after three years none of them had met him. Well aside from the ones that broke into the RED base. I also had an announcement today. Once inside everyone was in the rec room. When I walked in everyone smiled and greeted me and Medic. It was great that they all seemed to like him. He had actually found himself talking with Reinhardt, utterly in German so god knows what they were saying. I sat with Lena, Angela, Mei and Hana as I always had and just sat chatting.
"Come on love. What did you wanna tell us?" Lena sat, bouncing slightly in her place with excitement.
"Okay. This only happened a couple of days ago so I thought to wait to tell you but..." I held out my hand to the women in front of me, revealing the beautifully delicate ring. They all sat with shocked smiles on their faces. "Well?" I gestured for them to say something.
"It's stunning." Angela spoke up first. This followed them all congratulating me and Tracer grabbing my wrist and holding it aloft.
"Hey! Y/N's officially off the market!" She laughed and everyone cheered. Everyone bar one. I saw the edge of a trademark red serape walk out the door. I got up and went after it. After a while he stood on a balcony looking out. I stood next to him, leaning on the glass panel.
"I'm sorry. I didn't quite expect it to go like that, I was hoping to break it to you slowly, but you know what Lena's like." I laughed, a smile graced his face.
"Yeh. She's not exactly subtle is our Lena." He shrugged.
"You'll be there won't you?" I asked.
"At your wedding?" He questioned, looking disgusted at himself for saying 'yours' and not 'ours', "Of course. But you sure you want your ex there?"
"I insist upon it. I uh, I wanted you to walk me up the isle, I wanted Jack to give me away but I wanted you to walk me in..." I looked away. "If you don't want to do it or even to be there I totally get it. It's a lot to ask someone relinquish someone they love to another man and I can get someone else to do it..."
"No. I'll do it. Perhaps it'll give me the closure I need Darlin'." He smiled. "Why let the commander give you away?" He asked.
"He's the closest thing to a dad I've got." I shrugged. I wrapped my arms around McCree. "Thanks for everything Jesse."
"Anything for you Darlin'." He walked me back in and sat with me and Medic as we discussed what little we had thought about in terms of plans.
"Where's it going to be?" Mei asked.
"I was thinking Germany." I smiled looking up at Medic.
"Oh we know how to do a wedding. Have no fear on that front my dear." Reinhardt piped in gently patting my back, causing everyone to burst out laughing. It was good to be among friends and to be with the one I love.
