I sat staring out of the window of my little shop up at the castle. "What must it be like up there?" I muttered to myself.
"Get your head out of the clouds and get back to work." My mother scolded. "These robes won't embroider themselves."
"Yes mother. I'm sorry." I went to close the window, taking one last look up at the castle. My eyes met those of another, one grey, the other striking turquoise. He gave me a sad look as I closed the window and turned around to my desk, continuing my work.
I kept getting distracted, thinking about those sad eyes, eyes that lacked fire and life. He must have been a servant, like me, dreaming of a better life. Taking a moment to look out over the kingdom.
The king is a ruthless man, he demands respect and power. A fearsome man with the ability to control fire. Few people have ever seen the crowned prince. We know his name and that he would be roughly my age but that is all. The king keeps him inside the castle at all times.

That night I was left to close up the shop. I was about to lock up when I heard the door open. I turned to see the face from the window. He wore a long black cloak, his hood up so that a lot of his face wasn't visible to me. "Can I help you? Have you need for a seamstress?"
"No..." He looked troubled. "I-i mean. Yes. I need this fixing." He placed a tattered cloak on my desk. It was old and worn but made of very fine materials.
"How did you afford something like this?" I questioned. "Stealing from the royal family?"
"No. The prince gave it to me. I'm his manservant. He didn't want it." He shrugged. "Look at it. He wouldn't want it would he?"
"You make a good point." I smiled. "I was about to shut up for the night. You wouldn't mind picking it up tomorrow?"
"Of course. You need rest. Please allow me to walk you home. It is the least I could do." He offered with a low bow.
"Sure. Some company would be nice." I smiled locking the door behind me. "How is it working for the prince? Is he as much of a tyrant as his father?" He looked taken aback by my question.
"What?"
"You're kidding? Is living in the castle really that much of a different world even for servants?" I laughed. "I give up what little money I have to feed my younger brother. I haven't eaten today because of the so called king's taxes. Thanks to you the few extra coins I'll earn from fixing your cloak, I will eat tomorrow. The king's laws are relentless. I nearly lost my head because I closed the store late and was caught out after curfew."
"No. I like to think that the prince is kind to us." He mumbled. "I had no idea of the poverty people down in the town were living in." I arrived at my door turning to face the stranger.
"This is me." I shrugged at the small house.
"How many of you live here?" He questioned, looking behind me.
"5, soon to be six. My older sister is expecting. It's small but great to keep warm in the colder months." I smiled. "Thank you for walking me home. I'll have your cloak ready by noon tomorrow."
"I'll pick it up tomorrow night. If that's okay." I nodded and bid him goodnight.
We met like this for months, meeting after dark. He told me his name was Natsuo and that he had told the prince about our meetings.
One day I was working on a piece of embroidery for a visiting Noble when the door flew open. My mother bowed when she saw who was at the door. "Natsuo!" I ran over with a beaming smile but received a harsh slap to the face from the guard standing next to him. I fell back to the ground.
"Learn some manners wretch!" The guard yelled, he went to strike me again but Natsuo held out his hand. Only now did I take in his attire, regal clothes.
"N-Natsuo? What's happening? Why are you in royal dress?" I asked, tears filling my eyes, my face ringing with pain.
"My love, I haven't been honest with you." He spoke, kneeling down and gently placing his right hand on the side of my face, his cool skin soothing the pain.
"Prince Shoto." My Mother piped up from the doorway, "I apologise for my daughter's insolence. She simply mistook you for someone else." Again he held up his hand and my mother stopped talking.
"She knew exactly who I told her I was. I could see your daughter work from my window, and in watching her smile and sing her way through her working day she captured my heart. I pretended to be a serving boy, using my brother's name, to get closer and know her more. To solidify my feelings before asking her to come back with me to the castle." He turned and smiled at me. "If you would do me the honour." He offered me his hand. I cautiously took it and stood up. As he passed the guard who hit me he stopped, "disobey me again and strike my love, and you will learn just how much I can be like my father." He threatened, helping me up onto his horse.
"What about my family?" I asked holding him tight as we rode through the town.
"They can have any house they would like in the kingdom. A modest farm, the estate on the outskirts, a new home built just for them. Name it and it can be done." He smiled. "I can do anything for you."
"But the king-"
"He is no more. Chased out by my brother Tōya. Tōya does not desire the throne, he just does not think my father deserves it. That leaves me to take up the mantel of king." I just sat in shock. I've earned the affection of the new king. How?
About a week later we were preparing for the coronation of Shoto as the new king, despite being treated like royalty myself I still liked to help out with as much as I could. Having servants really wasn't my thing. Why have someone else do something I can do perfectly fine on my own? I was helping some servants put up some ceremonial drapes when two more came rushing over, taking the fabric from my hands. "M'lady Please. You need Not concern yourself with such laborious tasks." One spoke, bowing to me. I sighed taking back the drape I was holding.
"I came from the lower town, I can handle moving some drapes." I laughed. "When I get so bored I'm mucking out the stables then you can feel free to stop me." I smiled, "until then-"
"Until then leave her be." Shoto finished for me. Everyone stopped their work, bowing their heads to their king to be. "My love likes to keep herself busy. Offer her help but do not try to stop her. She's stubborn that way." He grinned. "Might I trouble you for some of your time?" He asked, extending his hand to me.
"I suppose I could make room in my busy schedule for you your highness." I laughed, taking his hand and following him. He sat down in the grass of the castle gardens, watching my little brother play in the grounds.
"He seems happy." Shoto smiled, watching the child.
"He loves it here. So much for him to explore. Was building us a house really necessary?" I laughed.
"Of course. I can't have the family of the would be queen living in a small house in the lower town could I?" He leant towards me capturing my lips with his.
"I didn't agree to that yet. We've only known each other for nearly a year." I pulled away, looking down to the ground. "Surely this cannot be. I am not even of noble birth. I am but a simple seamstress." He took my chin gently between his thumb and forefinger, making me look at him.
"Your Class means nothing to me." He gently pressed his lips to mine.
"Y/N. You coming to play too?" My brother called over to me.
"I will. I need to spend some time with Prince Shoto. I'll come and play later. I promise." I walked over, gently ruffling his hair. "The prince and I have a lot we need to do. You know he's got an important day coming up."
"Okay." He looked over my shoulder and bowed his head. "Have fun Prince Shoto." He said before running off.
"Oh. I intend to." Shoto mumbled with a smile.
