I sat at the edge of the frozen lake, using my knife to cut a hole through the ice to reach the water. Once I made it through I took my gloves off, going through the steps of the faded and tatty waterbending scroll. No matter how hard I tried, it wouldn't work. I got halfway through the technique but always lost control and the water fell to the ground. I need a waterbending Master but I'd never get through the test to be taught. Only the best are taught by masters. I continued practicing nonetheless, continuously getting more and more annoyed with myself.
"Your stance is all wrong." A voice spoke from the trees behind me. I picked up my knife as I turned to face the source of the sound. I spun round to come face to face with a waterbending master, our town's healer. He stood next to me standing in a wide, rigid stance. "This is what You're doing. Anyone would think you're trying to earthbend." He shifted his stance so it allowed him more freedom of movement. "Remember water is fluid. So, you must be too." He stood up and stepped back. "Go on. Again." I adjusted my stance, he was right. It was so much easier now, it was like the water was working with me, not against me. "Well done. Keep working on it." He stated before walking off.
"Thank you!" I shouted after him. The man was a renowned healer and one of the most powerful benders I'd ever seen. If he says keep working on it that is what i will do. A few weeks later i was in the same place trying to perfect a very advanced technique when he came out of the forest again.
"I assumed you'd be here." He grinned, bending the ice into a stool and sat down. "What are you learning today?"
"Multiple water whips." I smiled.
"A very advanced technique." He stated.
"Could you teach me?" I said quietly standing in front of him, bowing low. "I know I'm not nearly good enough to be your student, master, but please. Just a few tips." I felt a hand on my shoulder.
"You show the most promise of anyone in this town. I see great power and potential in you. I will take you as my apprentice." I couldn't believe it. Not just a student by an apprentice.
"You'll teach me how to heal?"
"If you possess the gift." He stated. "Come. I'll start training you now."
I followed him back to his home, out the back was a big field of ice with pools of water, ramps, ice pillars and a hot spring. You can bend all forms of water out here. I walked around and looked back to him in front of a pool of water. "Sorry. Just a bit in awe." I smiled.
"We start from the beginning. Push and pull." He started creating waves in the water, like the ocean lapping up a beach. I joined in, it was relaxing in a way. "Don't Just move the water. Feel it. Move with it, let it flow with you." I almost lost myself in the movement it was amazing. "Yes. You are promising indeed."
Months passed. My waterbending skill increased daily, his teaching was helping me do more in a few months than I had done in my life thus far.
I had also grown close to the healer, he was strong, powerful, respected, caring to those he healed. I couldn't really stop myself from falling for him.
Today I'd finally mastered the multiple water whips and I couldn't believe it. "I did it!" I cried.
"You should Test out your skills in combat." He stated. He had a few old friends in town at the time and lined them up asking me to choose who to fight. Earthbenders, firebenders, even an airbender and some non benders. I already knew who I would face. I stood in front of my teacher.
"I choose to fight you." I smiled.
"You don't want to do that. I won't hold back." He stepped back.
"That's what I'm counting on." I smirked. All of his friends looked between each other and stepped off the training ground.
"Use the whole ground. Remember, you can bend everything here. Everything." He stated, almost regretfully. "Begin!"
I immediately formed a water cloak around myself, this was my go to defence because from this I can produce multiple water whips should I need to. He attacked first, sending a bunch of razor sharp ice disks flying my way. I raised a wall of ice to block them, returning by freezing the water around his feet, extending the ice up to his waist. I used a water whip to try to attack, freezing the forward edge, to do more damage. I actually landed a hit, my victory was short lived however, he sent another barrage of disks towards me, a few catching my arms cutting them. I winced in pain as he too caught me with a water whip. Looks like I'm playing dirty. I ran behind the hot spring, bending the boiling water onto the snow, creating a layer of mist. I used this to creep up behind him, knocking him flying with a huge wave of water.
We continued our game of attrition for quite some time, both of us injured but him getting more and more frustrated that he couldn't pin me down, he has the upper hand when it comes to power but I am faster. I was racing towards him, spears of water aimed for him then suddenly, nothing. I couldn't move. My arms bound to my sides, my muscles tight, I could feel some being pulled, pain shooting through my body. I couldn't understand what was happening. I looked to my teacher who had his hands outstretched and as he lowered them I was forced to my knees. He stood over me a spear of ice raised, I could hear a dark chuckle deep in his throat. In that moment I genuinely thought he was going to kill me.
Then came a wave of relief, I had control again. I collapsed onto the ice. I looked up at me teacher. He was trapped in walls of rock, only his head visible, his arms pinned to his sides. He- he had to be stopped. He WAS going to kill me. The large earthbender picked me up. I looked back to my teacher, in that moment I felt nothing but fear, I had to look away. I cried into the shoulder of the strong earthbender as he took me inside and some of the others helped heal me as much as they could. About an hour later my teacher walked in, his hands covered by rigid metal gloves bound at the wrist. I shuffled backwards towards a wall. I didn't want to be near him.
"I told you you didn't want to face me. I should've known this would happen." He spoke, not looking at me, "blood bending is a curse. This is why I don't fight, why I'm a healer, I lose control. I was going to kill you." I looked away, crying.
"I want to go home." He stepped forward.
"You need healing first. Let me-"
"No!" I raised my hand with what strength I had, turning the icy ground in front of me into ice spears facing out from me. "I think you've done enough." I wept. "NEVER come near me ever again. I was a fool to trust you. To think, I managed to fall for a psychotic maniac like you! That's long gone. We were just sparing and you were going to kill me." I gestured for one of the others to help me up. I edged my way around him, he seemed stunned into silence. He said nothing just stood there.
I got home and just slept, I did what I could to heal myself but I had only managed to learn the basics for now.
Days passed and I developed a fever and grew weaker. My mum dropped by for a visit and was horrified at what she found. I was in a cold sweat, shaking uncontrollably. Some of my wounds must have become infected. I noticed she left, saying something about more blankets she came back and was followed by someone else. A figure I remember looming over me. I did what I could to clamber away. "Keep him away from me. I'd rather die." I begged. "I don't want HIS help."
"Don't Be ridiculous." My mother scalded. "He's the best healer we have."
"You haven't seen the things I have. You weren't there." I mumbled.
"Just let him do his work." She stated, getting annoyed. He knelt down in front of me and I tried to move away again but was blocked by a wall.
"I'm not using bending." He stated, removing his gloves. "I can't." His hands, once so still, delicate even, they were scarred, somewhat miss-shapen and they shook as he held them out. He brought forward a bag, full of herbs and vials of different medicines and medical implements. He cleaned and dressed the wounds, and gave me some kind of medicine to ease the fever. Throughout this time he never looked me in the eye, not once. He looked tired, I'd go as far as to say he looked older. How long had this fever lasted? I swear it had only been about a week or so but it looked like years had passed. He sat for a moment, taking me in, most likely checking he hadn't missed anything. Without a word he rose and walked out the door. Mum stopped him. "How much do i owe you?" She asked.
"Nothing. This is on me. She'll be fully healed in a few weeks," he placed a bottle in my mum's hand, "give her this twice a day and change her dressings, especially if you see any blood." With that he was gone.
About a month later I was back to full health, a few aches still remained, nothing a little stretching won't fix.
Mum handed me a small bag of silver pieces as I went to leave for the day to do some shopping. "Oh. I have some money."
"No. I want you to take this to the healer." I shuddered at his name.
"Fine." I shrugged and walked out. Best get this over and done with first. I knocked on his door and as soon as he answered I used some nearby snow to bind his hands together and froze it. I threw the small bag onto the table by the door. "From mum, for healing me." Nothing. "It's ok. You're welcome. I wouldn't have paid you. You were right. It was on you." I stated and started walking away.
"I'm sorry."
"Excuse me?" I turned back, "you're sorry? You broke me. Made me feel like I was worth something then was legitimately going to kill me. My mum has spent the last month working for those silver coins, saving them by reducing what she buys herself because you saved my life. She respects you more than anyone and she's so naive to your true nature. I've had nightmares of you since that day, I avoid this street, I can't begin to tell you what I feel."
"I understand. Please. I don't want you to be scared of me." He sighed.
"I'm not, Not any more. Not after I saw what that metal bender did to you. I assume he did that." I nodded towards his shaking hands.
"No. I did that." He looked away, "I'd hurt too many people with my bending, including those I care about. If I can't bend properly I can't hurt people." He shrugged.
"I-I assumed he'd done that to you..." I mumbled.
"A lot harder to do it to yourself but it can be done if you have enough motivation. Crushed, burnt, scalded. No feeling left in my hands, if I can't control my fingers then I can't blood bend."
"Can Uh... can I ask why? Like you'd lived with it for this long. Why now? I mean it's not like you hurt the chief's daughter is it? I'm just ordinary so it can't have been me? Your friends give you a stern talking to?"
"It was more what you said. The fear in your eyes and the realisation that I caused that. Even now. The hatred in your voice. It's understandable but still. You are such a kind and gentle soul someone like me would never have deserved someone like you." He sighed. "Anyway. I assume that will be all. Thank your mother for me. She didn't have to do this." I allowed the ice around his hands to melt as he shut the door. Now it was my turn to be in stunned silence.
Another few months passed and I couldn't stop thinking about what he said, what he'd done. All because he'd hurt me. I decided to go back. Not something I'd ever thought I'd find myself doing.
Over the few months I'd lost my mother in a freak attack by some ex military fire nation troops. Those thugs that still believed that the fire nation should rule. In that time I took her betrothal necklace as something to remember her by, to keep her close to me.
I arrived at the healers door to find it open. I could hear someone breathing heavily and irregularly. As I stepped in I saw the healer, slumped in a chair, bloodstained bandages wrapped around his chest. I walked over to him, placing my hand on his forehead, he was burning up. I went to bend some water onto his wounds but he grabbed my wrist. "Let me die." He sighed. "It's beyond your healing abilities."
"You should know better than to challenge me." I pulled my hand away bending the water onto his chest. I focused on healing, breathing deeply allowing my energy to flow into the water.
"Y-You've been practicing." He breathed with a smile.
"Of course. I'm always practicing." I spoke as I worked. "I wanted to be a healer as a child you know. I just needed to improve my bending first." I shrugged.
He slowly raised a shaky hand to my necklace, touching it lightly.
"Who's the lucky guy?" I could almost see a tear in his eye.
"No one."
"That is a betrothal necklace is it not?" He asked.
"Yes. But it isn't mine. It was my mother's. She was killed in the attack." I turned away. "Besides. No one will ever compare to the man who stole my heart first."
"I see. I suppose he died in the attack too then." He added, sitting up.
"Actually no. He hurt me. But I'm starting to see that it wasn't his fault, that he's done so much out of regret. I guess I've forgiven him. It's just waiting for him to forgive himself."
"Must be some guy. I hope you'll be happy together." He sighed.
"Me too. I want to show you something. I visited the spirit pool a while back, to learn how to heal from the true masters. They gave me this." I held out a small phial of water. "Water from the pool of the ocean and moon spirits. They say it can heal anything." I knelt in front of him, gently taking off his gloves. I carefully took the stopper out of the phial, and removed all the water. The healer retracted his hands.
"No. That is something to be used for something important. Do not waste such a gift on me."
"Remember what I said about the man I love?" He nodded, looking away. "Are you ready to forgive yourself?" He just stared at me.
"You hate me."
"No. I did for a while. Months ago I would have left you to die like you asked but what you said last time. It made me remember the sort of guy you really are. The man who took me in as an apprentice despite not being wealthy enough to pay for such a privilege. You taught me how to bend, how to heal. The times we'd go out at night to fully use the moon to bend the more I did with you the harder I fell. It all came back to me. Now, I couldn't hate you if I tried." I held out my hand to him. "Now please let me give you back the gift you possess." He slowly placed his hands in mine and I used the water to heal his hands. There was still some scarring from the burns but he could move them properly again.
"Thank you." He smiled. "If I may..." he held an arm out, asking if he could hug me.
"Of course." I leant forward giving him a hug. "Come on. You need to sleep." I stated helping him up and to his room. Once he was comfortable I sat on the floor next to his bed. "I'll be here if you need anything." There was silence for a few minutes.
"I need something." I turned to face him.
"Yes?"
"I need you to be comfortable too. Not just sat on the floor." He smiled, moving some of the covers back. "That is... if you'd be okay with that."
"Okay." I stood up, got in and laid my head on his shoulder with one are wrapped carefully around him. "Now get some sleep." I smiled.
"Mmhmm." He hummed already half asleep. "Thank you. I love you." He mumbled.
"I love you too." I smiled before falling asleep. This could be the start of something great.
