"My king. Is this really necessary?" I laughed. He was leading me through the grounds, a scarf over my eyes. Apparently he had a surprise for me. I was in the middle of practising magic but apparently this is more important. We came to a stop and he removed the scarf. When my eyes adjusted to the bright sun, i saw a beautiful spread of cushions and food.
"I believe your birthday is more important than practice." He smiled, looking incredibly pleased with himself.
"I just wish my father could be here." I sighed sitting down next to the young king.
"Imhotep was a great man. He would be so proud of who you are and what you have done. You have communicated with gods!" He smiled.
"I will go to Heliopolis later. Visit his tomb, I will take more offerings too."
"Why not go tomorrow? Have this day to yourself." He suggested.
"I have rituals to complete tomorrow. My king I cannot lounge around a palace like some of you." I laughed. "We magicians have a lot of work to do. If I am to succeed Karim I must work. I shouldn't even be here. I must keep praying, I have to." I stood up to leave but he took my hand.
"I'm sure the lord Anubis can spare you for a day." He smiled.
"Perhaps." I sighed.
"You've spent so much time training, I do not see you enough. Well... not as much as I would like." He mumbled, smiling.
"We both have busy jobs." I shrugged, "I'm working for you and the gods and you're running the entire country. We can't see each other as much as when we were kids."
"You don't want to?"
"I do. I just know we can't." I looked down. "I miss our time together and I'm so happy we have today." I smiled. "I assume we aren't just going to lounge around in your gardens all day."
"No. Of course not. I thought we could take a ride out, along the Nile. Then perhaps a walk later." He gestured for a few serving girls to come over holding boxes and items wrapped in linen. "But what is a birthday without a gift or two?" He grinned, again looking very proud of himself. Most were standard gifts, necklaces, bracelets, amulets to ward of evil or channel certain deities. I thought that was it until they brought forward two more. In the box sat a young black jackal pup. "We found him alone, no mother around. I figured it would be fitting for you to raise him. You know. Keep Anubis close to you." He smiled and took the last gift from the young girl. A beautiful, jewel encrusted, head band bearing an ostrich feather.
"You did all of this for me? My king. I can't take all of this."
"I could always order you to." He smiled.
"True. But you know this is too much. Come on Atem. You never go out of your way THIS much."
"That is true but there is a perfectly good reason for that." He looked down smiling, "I've been thinking, being pharaoh is kind of lonely and-"
"-you're not thinking of abdicating are you?!" I cut in.
"No. Of course not. My kingdom needs me. What I was going to say was that I think I should take a queen." He stood up looking out over the desert, standing in the short grass. He turned with a smile and offered me a hand, which I took and stood next to him.
"If that's what you want my king." I stepped back and lowered my head.
"Yes. So will you do me the honour?" He grinned.
"Wait. What? Me? I'm just a priestess. I'm not of a class to wed a pharaoh." I took another step back, covering my mouth in shock. "I have so much work to do, to become a member of your inner court, succeed Karim, become a great magician, work closely with the gods... I-I can't-"
"You can." He smiled. "You can do all that and more just from my side in stead." Why am I even thinking about this? I grew up with Atem, fell for him when we were teenagers. I guess that I pushed these feelings aside to avoid being hurt when he inevitably married for the good of Egypt. He's the king, he can do as he pleases, so if he actually chooses me then it must be possible to be with him.
"Okay." I mumbled.
"What?"
"Okay." I smiled. He just beamed at me, pulling me into the biggest hug ever, catching me off guard and causing me to lose my balance. We both fell into the small pool of water in the gardens where the Egyptian Water Lilies grew. "Great." I laughed, "Now I have to go change." I grinned, "I must bid you farewell for now my king."
"Allow me to walk you to your chambers, my queen." He smiled like a giddy schoolboy. I could get used to him calling me that. "After you have dressed we will hold a festival in your honour and I will announce you as my queen to be."
This is probably the best birthday ever, not because of the gifts or the prospect of becoming queen of Egypt which quite frankly terrifies me, but because I spent the entire day with my best friend. It was so calm and relaxing. Not something we get all that often recently, what with all of the dark magic descending on Egypt, but today was a light that pierced those shadows something I hope will continue in the years to come.
