"Come on Matt. There's no way you're gonna win!" I shouted over the loud cries of the crowd around me.
"We are Canadians! You're little British team can't beat us." He taunted back. We sat down in our seats. He on the home side and myself just across the isle on the away side. We agree on many things, hockey teams are not one of them. He's a Toronto Maple Leaves guy. I'm an MK Lightening girl coming from the UK. After years of just going to each others matches somehow a match between teams was organised. For once we were sat apart, different jerseys among our own team supporters. We chanted for our teams, shouted insults at each other, until the game ended in a tie.
After all the shouting and insulting we hugged and walked down to the edge of the ice like nothing happened. "Your team played well. For Brits." He laughed.
"Yeh well. So did yours. For moose on ice." I walked over to the locker area as people began to file out of the stands. I put my bag into a locker before the game began, I pulled it out and retrieved my skates. "You coming on Matt or shall a pro show you how it's done?" I laughed. Before he could answer an arm was thrown around me.
"Yo! Great game! I mean I could've beaten Matt's team but come on I'm amazing so no one could beat me!" Alfred basically shouted into my ear.
"Ahem!" Matthew coughed gaining the attention of both myself and Alfred. We looked over to Matthew already kitted out in his hockey gear. He tapped his stick on the ground. Alfred could tell this was a challenge.
"Sure. We'll play. Mono et mono."
"You and me brother." Matt smiled. He knew every time that Alfred thought he could beat him and every time Matt wins.
They both got ready and skated onto the rink. I skated out, puck in hand. "I want a clean game. No tripping. No full on fighting. First to score. As always, is the winner." I dropped the puck and skated to the nearest exit. "Come on Matt! You got this!" I shouted as he hit the puck towards Alfred's goal. "Go on! Matt!" He scored. I ran onto the ice, skating over to him, embracing him. "You won again." I smiled, kissing him gently, pulling off his helmet. "See Alfred. Never challenge my Mattie on hockey day." Alfred just shrugged and skated off. "No one does hockey quite like Canadians. Eh?" I smiled. He smiled as we skated off the ice waving to the crowd.
"20 minutes until our second event, the individual long program figure skating competition." The announcer boomed over the speakers.
"Your moment to shine my little maple. Remember the team and I will be cheering you all the way." He smiled as the Maple Leafs gathered behind him. I went to change into the clothes I was competing in and started my off ice warm up.
As I was sat on the floor in my splits I heard someone come up behind me. They placed their hand on my shoulder. I stood and turned to face them. "Oh. Hey Matthew."
"I came to wish you luck my little maple. Not that you need it though..." Aaaaand my shy little Mattie is back.
"Thanks Mattie." I said placing a delicate kiss on his forehead.
"One more thing.... Actually.. It can wait. Go win that gold." Well that was odd. Oh well. As the even was announced I skated onto the ice for my on ice warm up then waited my turn to skate. I skated my heart out, and it paid off. 1st place. As I stood on the podium a familiar hockey player skated in my direction. I hopped off the podium and then skated towards him. "I did it Mattie! I did it!" He picked me up, spinning me around.
"That you did my beautiful little maple." He smiled. "I- I have something for you."
"Here Mattie? Now?"
"Yes. This is the only place I can do it.. While I have this much courage." He pulled something out of his pocket and dropped onto one knee. I covered my mouth in shock.
"Oh my god."
"Please Y/N. Let me speak. I have thought about this for a while now. How to do it. When to. I've spoken to your parents they've given me their blessing. I love you and I have ever since you set skate on my rink. You moved here for your career and you said you stayed for me. I will go wherever you go. I want you to stay with me forever. Be mine. Marry me?" I fell to my knees, kissing him with all I had.
"Yes Matthew! Yes. Forever!" I just hugged him. Never wanting to let go. He pulled back to slide the ring onto my finger. The crowd was going insane, we both stood and waved and skated off. Now that was one way to get engaged. I'll never forget this day.
