Every day I have grown accustomed to being woken by my brother complaining at me for missing training. Today was different, nothing. No armour being thrown at me, no opening the curtains and pulling off my sheets. Just a simple knock at the door and in walked Merlin. "Well. This is a pleasant surprise." I smiled sitting up in bed. "Arthur sent you? Let me guess. I missed training. He's tired of coming to get me so he's getting you to do his work." I got up and wrapped my arms around his waist. "Though, I am glad it's you." I smiled.
"Arthur is on his way my lady." I sighed and walked over to my wardrobe.
"You know. I hate these rules, the one that says I can't be with you for instance." I shrugged stepping behind the screen to change. "Pass me that dress will you."
"I'll do that thank you." Arthur spoke from the door. "Do you have a date to the feast tonight?" He asked handing the dress to me.
"Of course I don't. Are you taking Gwen?" I spoke spitefully.
"I don't know what you're talking about." He spoke through gritted teeth.
"Oh come on Arthur. It's so obvious a blind man could see it." I laughed, "isn't that right Merlin?" I smiled at my brothers servant.
"Hey, I'm staying out of this. He's your brother." He backed up with his hands raised.
"Just get out Arthur. I know I missed practice and I will continue to until you get it through your thick skull that I'm never going to be good with a sword."
"You need to be able to defend yourself." He stated smugly.
"I can." I walked over to my bed, pulling a longbow out from under it. "I'm not useless Arthur. No matter what you may think... now please, go."
"Fine. Merlin. Come on." He shrugged, leaving.
"Wait. I need to speak to Merlin for a moment." Arthur just shrugged again and walked off. "He'll get suspicious." Merlin stated, walking over to me.
"He's seeing a servant, why can I not do the same?" I wrapped my arms around his neck. "He thinks he is being subtle but far from it." He rested his forehead on mine.
"Currently neither are you." He grinned.
"Are you questioning me boy?" I mocked.
"No my lady. Never."
"Good." I quickly gave him a kiss before walking to the door, "go. My brother will be looking for you." He nodded, gently resting his forehead on mine for a moment as he passed.
That night I joined my brother, father and the Lady Morgana for the feast being held in honour of Morgana's birthday.
I handed her Morgana her gift, a beautiful necklace, I spent weeks searching for the perfect one. After Arthur and my father presented their gifts the festivities began. "Please excuse me. I just need to get some air." I smiled at my family, standing up and walking out to a nearby balcony, followed closely by a certain serving boy. He wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me closer to him.
"You look wonderful my lady." He whispered into my ear.
"You've put a clean shirt on." I laughed, resting my head on his shoulder. "My father wants me to marry." I sighed, running my hand through his hair.
"It was to be expected." He murmured, but still refused to let go.
"I do not want to." I looked up at him, deep blue eyes staring down at me. I quickly pulled him down to me, kissing him. "Run away with me Merlin. I can stand keeping up this lie."
"I can't. We can't. You are needed here." He held me close.
"I need to. Merlin, I love you. I can't take it that I cannot do anything about it." Again, I ran my fingers through his dark hair. He placed his hand on my cheek, kissing me once again.
"Getting some air are we?" I heard my brother's voice from the doorway. I startled but didn't move from Merlin's side. "You both know this is impossible!" He scalded, "you cannot be together!"
"Who cannot be together?" Father spoke, rounding the corner. His face immediately dropped. "Get your hands off my daughter." He warned stepping towards Merlin. I stood in front of him. "What is this?" He questioned.
"What do you think father? Change. I'm not marrying for the kingdom. I care not for class or anything of the sort."
"This has to be some kind of trick. I should have the boy's head." My father again stepped forward, as did I So we were toe to toe.
"You do that and I disown you." I threatened. "I love him and that is the end of it. I'll give you two choices. Banish us or let us stay. It's simple. What do you value more, your pride or your blood?" I didn't realise I was crying until Merlin placed his hand on my shoulder.
"Sire. I love your daughter dearly. I would never-"
"Silence!" My father snapped. "I have it within my right to exile the pair of you, but you are my daughter. I do not wish to earn your resentment." He turned his back on me, "Merlin. Do not make me regret this by hurting her." He stormed off.
"I know what he'll ask of me." I shrugged, wrapping my arms around Merlin, "He will ask that I renounce my claim on the throne. It will leave it empty should anything ever happen to him and Arthur, I will no longer be crowned princess and he'll probably want to take away my title all together. All he can do without outright disowning me." I looked up at the young servant. "I don't care. I have what I wanted. If there's one thing my father admires it's strong character and he knows I'm too stubborn to back down. I do not fear him."
"You're really willing to give everything up for me?" He questioned.
"Of course. A kingdom means nothing to me if I have no one to share it with." I smiled.
"You'll always be royalty though." He grinned, pulling me closer to him. "He'll never completely disown you. You'll be like the lady Morgana."
"Yes. But that would make you a lord then." I smirked, "or do you enjoy your life as a servant?"
"I enjoy serving you my lady." He smiled.
"I'm sure I'm nicer than my brother." I laughed
"That too." We just chatted and laughed until we reached my chambers. "Well. This is where I bid you goodnight." He smiled.
"Sure." I opened the door and pushed the serving boy inside, "or not." I grinned.
The next morning was the most peaceful I'd had in years. Waking up in the arms of someone you love. I was startled by a knock on the door. "Yes?"
"My lady. I've come to assist you this morning." The young maid spoke from the other side of the door.
"Y-Yes. Come in." I smiled, laying back down in bed being pulled in closer to Merlin.
"Everything Okay my lady?" She questioned with a smile.
"Never better my dear. Never better."
