"Computer. Give me a bar, circa 1940s, wartime England. A band to sing with and a suitable audience." I spoke, straightening out my dress waiting for the doors to open.
"Enter when ready." The Computer spoke back.
I walked in, a busy bar, full of soldiers heading off to war, girls weeping over those leaving. I walked up to the stage, taking my position behind the microphone. I nodded to the band and began singing, some old classics, my favourite being "We'll Meet Again" by Vera Lynn.
I continued a number of songs before walking to the bar for a drink. "Quite the voice you got there ma'am." The barman spoke.
"Thanks. It's actually my first performance. I've never sung in front of people before." I smiled shyly.
"Well. Sure doesn't sound like it. Besides, one of those lads in the back had his eye on you." He smirked, handing me a drink. I turned to look at the back of the room only to see Riker stood in the crowd smiling at me. He wore an old style British uniform, he slightly raised his glass to me and I did the same. "No. Not that one. The other one stood with him." The barman added.
"There's no one there." He quickly looked up from a glass He was polishing. I turned to come face to face with Data. "Lieutenant Commander." I looked around, "Is there any particular reason for you and Riker being here?" I asked.
"We simply wished to know what you enjoyed doing in your spare time." He smiled. "I for one found your voice rather enjoyable." He spoke, following me to a table. "Inquiry. Why this era of history? Most people choose to, push away the memories of war and conflict."
"The comradery, the way music could lift the spirits of those going to war or losing someone to it. Do you sing Mr Data?" I asked.
"I have never tried. I assume my vocal range can produce a mixture of tones similar to singing." He thought for a moment, "however, I also wished to ask you if you would be present today when Geordi implants the emotions chip."
"Why me? We hardly know each other. I'm a Doctor Data, Not someone you need to see very often." I laughed, "surely someone like councillor Troi would be more beneficial to you."
"I know all about you Lieutenant. I have read your files and I believe that your company and calm composure would be most beneficial, should the new emotions become too much for me to handle."
"A sound observation. Okay. I'll be there. Allow me to change first." I smiled. "Computer. End program." The room disappeared and I walked over to Commander Riker. "Data could've come on his own." I smiled.
"Yeh. Well maybe word got out that a beautiful gal was singing in this joint and I couldn't pass the opportunity to see that. Could I?" He smirked. I have known Will since our time at the academy, I know he's a flirt but think nothing of it. We're just friends.
Later that day I walked down to engineering to meet Geordi and Data. "Thank you for coming." Data spoke as Geordi removed the top of his head. It was strange seeing him like this, I've always thought of him more as a person than a machine. I stepped back and allowed Geordi to work. I found myself reading an old instruction manual on the inner workings of the worp core when Geordi called me over.
"Sorry. Got distracted. Have you finished?"
"Yeah." He reached down behind Data, evidently flipping some sort of switch. The android sat bolt upright.
"How you feeling Data?" I asked, kneeling down so as to be level with him.
"Quite... ordinary. I assume certain stimuli will trigger different emotions." He stood up, offering me a hand, which I took.
"That's usually how feelings work." I smiled. "Come on. How about we go to ten forward? I'll buy."
"I could go with that. I'm not passing up the opportunity of a free drink." Geordi replied. Data simply nodded and walked with me.
We had just reached ten forward when a young nurse came running up to me. "Lieutenant. Ensign Holdsworth has gone into labour. Dr Crusher is still dealing with the outbreak on deck 5 and has requested you go to med bay to deliver the child."
"I'm on my way." I turned back to Data and Geordi. "Sorry guys. Another time maybe. Feel free to have one on me. Tell Guinan to put it on my tab!" I called back as I ran down the halls back to med bay.
Once there I helped the ensign with the delivery of her child without a problem. I wrapped the child in a towel and handed him to ensign Holdsworth. "Remarkable." Someone spoke from the door, I turned around to see Data stood there.
"Come on in Commander." I looked up at him, "can really see why they call it the miracle of childbirth can't you." I smiled. "It's this part of the job I love, helping new lives into the world." I walked over to the Ensign. "How about we get him all cleaned up then we'll move the two of you to maternity yeah?" She nodded, handing me her son who I took to give a quick check up and a bath. The whole time I was watched by Data. "Commander. Do you know how distracting that is? Knowing you're constantly behind me. I haven't the faintest idea, why now you decide to take any interest in the field of medicine."
"I only wish to know more about those I care about. Yourself included."
"Data. You hardly know me. We've hardly ever spoken."
"I know that you graduated from the academy with honours, you have been awarded medals for bravery and valour, that you enjoy singing and originally signed up to Starfleet wishing to become a captain."
"Most of that is in my file. If anyone else said that to me I'd call them a stalker." I laughed. "Since you're suddenly so interested in knowing me, and I have patients to care for currently," I spoke, gently picking up my infant patient, "How about we meet in ten forward when our shifts permit? We can talk and we can see if anything in the day triggers any of your new emotions. Yeh?"
I spent the next few months meeting with Data, helping him figure out his new found emotions, it become a regular occurrence for me to find myself in his quarters, simply chatting and having a cup of tea. "Data, there's this big event going on at the next star base we're going to. A sort of awards ceremony for advances in medicine and such, Beverly and I have been invited. It uh, it's customary for a woman to usually be accompanied to these sorts of events. Would you like to come with me? I mean it's fine if you don't, I'll ask Will. He'll be happy to, free party and all that." I laughed.
"No. I will accompany you. I am sure the Commander will be busy with his work." He stated, "plus, I am not overly keen on the way he looks at you." He spoke through gritted teeth.
"What do you mean? Will and I have been friends since the academy." I defended, "I was the only girl he didn't want to date. We're too close friends to do something like that."
"I have spent a long time studying human body language and have come to the conclusion that Commander Riker is indeed very attracted to you."
"So what if he is then? I'm not seeing anyone, he's not. Where would the harm be if we did try something?" I shrugged. "He's a good looking guy. A lot of women on this ship would kill to have a chance with him."
"Commander Riker is what humans would refer to as a player. He flits from one relationship to another, never really committing himself. I do not believe that he is right for you when finding a suitable partner."
"Data. If I didn't know you better I'd say you were jealous." I smirked. "That's what this is, is it not? Jealousy." I sat down next to him again. "An android, jealous of one man over the affections of a girl." I smiled, "you do realise I asked you to go with me first right? Will was just in case you didn't want to go. You were my first choice." I nudged him slightly "for a guy with a giant computer for a brain you sure can be thick."
He looked at me, a small smile pulling at the corner of his lips.
"Shall I ask again?" I laughed. "Would you come with me to the awards ceremony on the next star base, Lieutenant Commander Data?" I asked very over dramatically.
"I would be honoured." He smiled in return.
