Ok. This turned out longer than I expected. Oh well. I may also do a part two to this but don't hold me to it haha. Anyway have some Avatar AU Spy stuff. Idk what it is haha.
2525 words.
Being the daughter of Fire Lord Zuko, there's a high chance some people want me dead. It goes with the thing of being royal. A lot of people love you and some hate you enough to hire assassins. People have already made attempts on my life, it's no surprise my father hired me a bodyguard. A big earthbender guy called Heavy. He doesn't say much but I do feel safer around him. I can defend myself but with him around it's just an extra pair of hands and eyes.
I decided to go for an evening stroll in the gardens, I had planned to go alone but Heavy insisted on accompanying me. I sat in front of the pond, a small bread roll in my hand. "What are you doing?" Heavy asked.
"Just coming to feed the turtle ducks." I smiled. "Come here." I patted the ground beside me and he sat with me. I handed him half the bread and tore off little pieces throwing it into the water. "My father and I would come and do this all the time when I was a child. Then I got all my royal duties and had to be kept inside to study and now I'm just so busy I haven't had time to do this in ages." I explained, placing some crumbs in my hand and holding it just above the water. One brave little turtle duckling swam up and ate the bread out of my hand. "They're usually so shy. This one's a little braver." I smiled.
Suddenly Heavy fell face first into the water beside me, a large knife protruding from his back. I jumped to my feet, creating a ring of fire at my feet. "Who are you and what do you want?" I asked, my eyes scanning the surroundings. "I'd come out if I were you, my father would hate me to have to burn the gardens but if it means ridding myself of you it's a chance I'm willing to take!" A dry laugh came from behind a tree and a masked man stepped out.
"You really think you can kill me? That guard of yours was easy pickings and you will fare no better." I had to up my defence, I raised some of the fire into my hands, changing it from an orange flame to a hotter blue flame. He looked almost shocked.
"Didn't expect that. Did you. My aunt may be crazy but I did learn some things." He stepped back. "So. Who wants me dead this time huh?" I questioned the man, stepping forward.
"I don't know his name. I just know that if I bring him your head I'll get paid." He smirked shrugging.
"If it's money you want I can give you that. Please. You've already killed an innocent man today."
"His price is high my dear. I doubt you can pay that." I looked at the man like he'd lost it.
"Don't you know who I am?" I questioned.
"I don't ask questions." He replied.
"I'm the fire lord's daughter. Killing me would most likely start a war between benders and non benders. If that is what you want then by all means, kill me." I stepped forward placing my throat against the knife in his hand staring him dead in the eyes. "Or I can offer you a way out with more money than whoever is hiring you. I can say you, a brave unknown man fought off an attacker and ask my father that you be rewarded accordingly." I smiled "guards!" I shouted and turned back to the masked man. "Tick tock." When the guards arrived they bowed their heads to me but the masked man had me behind him in a defensive stance. "Princess. What happened?" A guard questioned, "and who is this man? Are you hurt?"
"No. I was attached and my bodyguard was killed. This man heard the commotion and came to my aid." I stood next to him. "I wish to see my father about this immediately."
"Of course. Come with us." After a conversation with my father it was decided that the man should become my bodyguard and was allowed to live in the palace accordingly.
One day I was out for a stroll, a large hat covering part of my face so I wasn't as easily recognised. The man, I now knew as Laurent walked beside me, his eyes scanning every street we turned down. I walked down towards an old fountain in the square and sat on the edge. A couple of water bender kids were playing around the fountain, one accidentally splashed me Laurent stood up and went to walk towards them. "Hey." I grabbed his sleeve. "It's fine. It's just a little water. Besides. They're only kids." I smiled. The one who splashed me came over.
"Hey. I'm really sorry miss." He addressed me. "Lemme get that off for ya." He quickly used his bending to lift the water from my dress. "Wouldn't want to ruin ya dress." He smiled placing one hand over the other in a water tribe bow, to which I reciprocated but in the fire nation style.
"Sweet little kid really." I smiled. "He'll grow up to be a great waterbender." I smiled. On the walk back Laurent stopped suddenly. "What is it? Is someone there?" He nodded slightly. He pulled me behind him and pulled a knife from his belt.
"Come our and i may spare your life. But, where's the fun in that?" He spoke with a smirk. A young earthbender stepped out of the shadows.
"What's a non-bender like you gonna do?"
"Oh. You have no idea BOY." He spat back, so much venom in his words. The boy attacked first launching rocks at my protector. I'm not a helpless girl but having eyes and ears out for me is a bonus, I untied my long skirt to reveal my sparring gear. I stood at Laurent's side. "Aren't you meant to stay behind me?"
"And watch as you have all the fun. Not likely." I ran towards my attacker, using my fire to power me forwards, leaving Laurent staring for a second. Having watched him for a while I know if I can get the attacker's back to face him he's as good as done for. Once I had him in position I nodded to my masked protector. What happened next surprised me, usually it would be a knife to the back and nothing more was said this time he held the boy's arms to his side and a knife to his throat.
"Tell me who sent you and I will let you go with your life." He offered the boy a choice.
"I don't know their name. But they're a huge gang leader round these parts. He's got my brother under surveillance, they'll kill him if I do t kill her." He pointed to me. "He wants to topple the monarchy. Said by killing her the fire lord then has no heir and he won't live forever so that'll be the end of it. I don't care either way. I want my brother safe!" The boy cried. Laurent whispered something to the boy causing the boy to nod. He turned back to me.
"Ma Petit Chou fleur. I must leave for a while, go home and wait for me. Answer the door to no one but your father and mother. Do you understand me?!" He took my by the shoulders staring me dead in the eyes.
"Yes. But why? Where are you going?"
"I'm going to do my job. To protect you. As to why, when people see I am not with you they will come for you." He looked at me with such urgency I didn't understand, he's always treated this job as a chore.
"Why now have you such dedication to your job? You'll get your money if you take out this gang leader or not."
"Merde." He spoke under his breath. "I no longer care for the money. I haven't for a while now. I just want you safe." He turned to the boy. "Get her back to the palace! I will make sure your brother is unharmed just keep her safe!" I turned to look at the boy who nodded but when I turned back Laurent was gone.
Two days passed and nothing, no word from my masked man. I told my father everything and he kept me under constant guard ever since.
More and more days passed and I became increasingly worried. Why? Wasn't he just another guard to me? But that look he gave me when he left, it was full of pain. I couldn't shake that image. Out of nowhere a messenger hawk landed on the windowsill I was leaning on and rubbed its head against my arm. "Hey there. This a letter from Dad?" I asked, Dad was visiting the southern water tribe to see some old friends and I wasn't allowed to go because it was "not safe." I opened the letter, it was from some healer in the northern water tribe. Laurent was there. I ran to my mother and explained everything. "Please. I have to go. I have to see him."
"This man is important to you? He's your bodyguard." She retaliated.
"He's more than that. I'll take dad's other dragon please. I won't be long. A few days. Maximum. I won't get hurt. I know people in the northern tribe." I pleaded and eventually she let me go.
I arrived at the northern water tribe and entered the healer's hut. Laurent was laying in a pool of water he looked so lifeless. I rushed over but a hand stopped me. "Wait. He's sleeping." The healer spoke to me, He towered over me in size, small circular glasses perched on the end of his nose.
"What happened to him?" Tears welled up in my eyes, I didn't need him to answer I saw the scarring on his hands.
"He infiltrated a gang, the leader was a firebender with a ferocious temper." He looked down, away from me. "I'm sorry your highness. I'm doing all I can but the scarring will most likely be there forever." I heard the water stir behind me and a wet hand entwine in mine. I turned round to face the masked man. I couldn't help myself, I pulled the mask from his head and pressed his lips to mine. I pulled back and shut my eyes handing the mask back to him. He took it from me and I waited a second for him to put it on before opening my eyes. Before me stood a man I'd only imagined what he'd look like. A rather gentle face but defined features. His hair swept back from his face, it was jet black but flecks of grey were beginning to show at the front and sides. Now however, parts of his body were covered in burns. I could see being out of the water pained him. I lead him back to the water and left the healer to do his job.
I came back in about an hour to see how he was doing. I sat on the ground beside him, gently running my fingers through his hair. "You didn't have to do this. You didn't have to get yourself hurt for me."
"Then you'd still be in danger. It's my job and my honour to protect you your highness." He smiled. "At least you won't have to worry about assassins any more."
"You got injured this badly and STILL managed to kill him?"
"You underestimate me Chou fleur." He chuckled.
"I really should stop doing that." I smiled back at him, "you should get some rest. I'll send a hawk to my mother telling her I'll be gone for a while but I'm safe."
"You couldn't be safer. My friend here is a waterbending master. When I'm healed I'll take you home and everything will be back to normal. You'll hardly need me." He seemed almost sad.
"Laurent. I will never stop needing you. If not as a guard then maybe... something else." I shrugged blushing. "I know I'm not exactly meant to date too far below my class but I want to change that."
"You- you want to be with... me?" He questioned in disbelief.
"Yeah. Why wouldn't I? You've defended my life numerous times but you don't treat me like I'm some fragile little turtle duck. You went above and beyond what you needed to do, you didn't have to go after the gang leader and put your life at risk like that but you did." I smiled, "you're an attractive guy and you're always willing to talk to me even when I'm in a terrible mood." I laughed slightly at my last point, still sat running my fingers through his soft hair, reminiscing. I looked down to see his eyes fixed on me. "Sorry. I just got lost in my thoughts."
"No need to worry mon Cher." He smiled up at me.
"I just want to be able to give you a proper hug without causing you pain."
"You will. If I know anything about my healer is that he's going to have me patched up in no time. He's the best in the world and no one can convince me otherwise." I continued chatting with him for a while, laying on the ground next to him so as to be on his eye level, until the door to the healer's hut opened and none other than my father walked in.
"What are you doing? I thought I told you to stay at home?" He questioned strolling over to me. I quickly stood up bowing to him and brushing off my clothes.
"I know. I disappointed you father, but I heard word of Laurent and I HAD to come." I explained.
"Your mother tells me this man means a lot to you." He raised an eyebrow, his face unreadable.
"Yes. He does. You can't tell me I can't be with him, I'm old enough to do as I please and mum is a non bender so you can't stop me in that respect too." I waited for a response until his face broke out into a smile.
"I'm only glad that my daughter has found someone, and someone who can protect her and treat her as she deserves." He looked at Laurent and then back to me. "Take your Time and I will see you at home."
"How much time?" I questioned.
"However long you wish."
"So we can go travelling? Now there's next to no security risk I can leave the fire nation and actually see the world?" I waited for a response.
"Yes. The two of you can travel... on one condition." He stated, "you send your mother and I a letter from wherever you go." He smiled. I ran and instantly hugged him.
"Thank you dad."
He left and I once again sat with Laurent in a comfortable silence. Once he's healed we're going to have the time of our lives. To be continued....
Maybe. 😂
