"He's what?!" I responded to Picard, he came to my quarters to inform me that it had been decided that Data, my friend and... Well... other things, has been deemed property of Star Fleet. "With this new chip installed, he has emotions, feelings, the ability to love Captain. He is more sentient than he's ever been. I won't allow it."
"Lieutenant. Please. I have contested this but I need your help to prove he is more than a possession." The captain interjected.
"Of course." I smiled, "anything for Data."We all sat in the courtroom, Commander Riker was made to be our opposition and at the end of his 'demonstration' he placed his hand on the small of Data's back. "Objection!" I stood up however it was too late, Data slumped over in an unconscious state.
"As you can see the android can be rendered inert and in an unconscious state, an off switch if you will." Riker stated.
"I can render you a similar state." I mumbled, reaching behind Data to reactivate him. He quickly sat back up, smiling at me.
"You may now begin your argument." The judge stated.
"Lieutenant Commander Data." I turned back to him, "what are you?"
"I am an android."
"Yes. Does that mean you are not sentient?"
"No. I do not believe it does. I am aware of my surroundings and my consciousness. I am intelligent and now have the ability to feel and comprehend emotions." He stated.
"Good." I turned to the room. "Am I a possession of Star Fleet?" I questioned.
"No. You are an officer of Star Fleet. Numerous accolades to your name." Riker responded.
"So does Lieutenant Commander Data. And by the previous definition, I am sentient. If the same rules for him are applied to me I am no less of a possession than he is." I stated. "Mr Data is the same as I. He can be offended, saddened, angered, but he can also feel joy, happiness.. love. He is as much of a person as I am, as you are, as we all are. He should be given the right to make these choices himself." I stood behind him and smiled, placing a hand on his shoulder.
"Does the opposition have anything to challenge?" The judge turned to Riker.
"We do." He turned to me, "I called Lieutenant Y/N to the stand." He stated. I sat in the chair and placed my hand upon a pad to identify me.
"Lieutenant Y/N Y/L/N. Occupation, Doctor. Current assignment, the USS Enterprise. Career achievements, Starfleet Medical Academy Valedictorian, Starfleet Delta Cross." It read out.
"Lieutenant. You are a doctor correct?" Riker asked.
"Yes."
"A human doctor." He stated.
"Yes."
"Then how, may I ask, does that make you so qualified to talk about Data?" He asked.
"I assisted in the development of his emotions chip and have been there to aid him in the discovery of new emotions." I smiled at the yellow eyed android across the room.
"What is your relationship with the Lieutenant Commander?" He asked. "Remember you must answer honestly."
"Lieutenant Commander Data and I... are in a romantic relationship."
"Wouldn't that make you biased in his favour?" Riker pressed.
"No. Everything I have provided is factually correct. The fact of mine and Data's amorous relationship Just backs up the fact he is sentient and can feel and form relationships." I smiled. I sat for what seemed like an eternity, until the judge stood.
"I have decided to rule that the android known as Data is not considered a possession of Starfleet. I breathed a sigh of relief. Walking over to Data, wrapping my arms around him.
"Thank god. If anything happened to you I don't know what I'd do." I spoke, resting my head on his chest.
"And I too would do anything to prevent our separation." He wrapped his arms around me.
"Thank you, for campaigning in my favour." He looked down at me and smiled.
"It was the captain who told me what was happening. I had to help. I couldn't let them take you away."
"Couldn't deal without your little toy?" Commander Maddox strolled over. "All that nonsense about him feeling, you can't really believe that." He laughed.
"Believe it? I helped ensure it." I turned to Data, "May I?" He nodded, I carefully unhinged the side of his head and removed the emotions chip. I turned back to Maddox, "myself and Geordi LaForge developed this chip, I helped with all human neurological aspects, he simply converted it to machine. Thanks to this, he can feel just as you and I." I placed it back into Data's head and carefully sorted out his hair.
"False emotion. He is simply emulating, mimicking."
"Not true. Data, what do you feel? Right at this moment."
"Offence that Commander Maddox still refuses to accept the fact that I am a living being, relief that I may continue my service aboard the Enterprise and my admiration and affection for you Lieutenant." He smiled at the last bit.
"Thank you. Now if you'll excuse us." I spoke, linking my arm within the Android's, "I do believe we have a dinner reservation at this starbase tonight and I personally would much like a shower before that." I shot a suggestive smirk up at Data. "Good day Commander." I went to walk away but Data held me back, turning again to Commander Maddox.
"I believe the emotion you are experiencing is called jealousy. Do not worry, it is very normal among humans." He smirked.
"Why would I be jealous of an android?" Maddox spoke through gritted teeth.
"Well, I have gained the affection and an extremely intimate relationship with, in my opinion, the most beautiful woman in Starfleet. It is only natural for a male of your species to feel jealous. To want what he can never have." He simply smiled and returned to my side, walking with me back to be transported aboard the Enterprise.
"I am so glad you are not being forced into that stupid experiment any more, and you now have the right to resign one day, should the desire arise for you." I smiled, pulling him close as we entered my quarters.
"Why would I ever need to resign? I do not age as everyone else does." He pointed out, sitting on my couch.
"I don't know." I sat beside him, resting my head on his shoulder. "Perhaps one day you may wish to have a family, spend time with them." I shrugged.
"You know as well as I. I cannot procreate in the sense that you would have to as a human. I must manufacture a child." He pointed out.
"Data. That wasn't an example, more of a suggestion." I sighed. "Before you say it, i know you and I cannot have a family but there are always children that can be adopted for various reasons." I stood up. "Forget it. You're loyal to your job. It was a stupid suggestion." I walked over to my desk, "I just thought, you and I have been together a number of years... forget i said anything. I'm getting ahead of myself. Rushing into things."
"This Is something you have thought about?" He tilted his head in a questioning manor.
"Yeh." I shrugged. "Forget it though. It was a stupid suggestion. We're both still relatively young anyway eh?" I smiled. "A conversation for another day." I stood up and went to walk into my bathroom, however my path was blocked.
"You cannot expect me to just forget that until you decide to bring it up again." He slowly took my hand in his. "I personally think it would be an intriguing venture, one I would not wish to undertake with anyone other than yourself."
"Seriously?" I smiled.
"Yes." He smiled back. "From what i have observed of humans when it comes to these kinds of emotions, it is the next logical step to take." He paused, "though I do not know if Starfleet will permit me to marry, like Commander Maddox I am afraid that they question my sentience."
"We will cross that bridge when we get there. For now I'm just happy you agreed."-Jadieelynchx
