From my perch on my tree I see a young man sat at the base, reading a book in the summer sun. I instantly recognise him, he is one of the four kings and queens. I feel almost honoured that he has chosen my tree under which to rest and read. I descend the tree, forming myself a human body as I did so. "Good Day, your majesty." I greeted with a low bow.
"Where did you come from?" He jumped up, dropping his book.
"You took refuge under my tree. I find it only polite that I greet you." I smiled.
"Your tree? You are aware this is my castle right?" He smirked.
"I am a Dryad, sire, I am bound to a specific tree and I think you'll find that one is mine." I smiled.
"Then I will find somewhere else to read." He spoke, picking up his book.
"That Is not what I meant. I am honoured you chose here as your place to relax. It has a wonderful view, does it not?"
"That it does." He smiled. "Would you care to join me?" He spoke sitting back down again. I sat next to him and watched as he continued reading. "I don't suppose you've spent a lot of time with people." He smirked while reading.
"No. I've been observing from my tree for hundreds of years but never really interacted with anyone. Except the fauns when we all used to dance together. Why do you ask?"
"Hundreds of years? How old are you?" He queried.
"Nearly 700, I'm as old as my tree. I live as long as it does. We are tied together."
"Well then, if I should start to frequent this spot to read or relax I will ensure it is never cut down." He smiled.
"Then I must bid you farewell for now your majesty. I can assume you are very busy. I will be here waiting, until next time." I smiled, melting back into a form of petals and back into my tree.
Months passed this way, he would often come and sit under my tree when he had free time, when he was stressed and needed a place to calm down and look out over Narnia. Sometimes we would just sit and others we would talk and laugh, he would teach me what I had missed in the time we tree folk had slept through the long winter.
Today we were sat beneath the tree watching as the white horses played in the breaking waves. "How far can you go from this place?" He asked as he rested his head back on the trunk of the tree.
"As far as I please. So long as the tree remains standing. Why?" He stood up and offered me his hand.
"Can you ride?"
"Once or twice many years ago. We never have much need for horses." I shrugged taking his hand.
"Then you shall ride with me." He smiled walking me to the stables. He helped me up onto his horse so I sat behind him. "Is there anywhere you would like to go?"
"Wherever his majesty wishes to take me." I smiled.
We rode for a while, eventually stopping in a clearing in the woods, next to a beautiful waterfall. "I know this place." I smiled walking around. "A few friends and family used to meet here, this was one of the places we'd come to dance with the fawns." I sat down on the grass beside the young king, who was just smiling, watching my movements. "My sister a, cherry dryad, lives in these woods."
"I can assume this place is full of narnians. I mean it's a beautiful place to live."
"It was." I sighed, looking around.
"What do you mean?"
"Well. On the day of your coronation you were gifted many trees and plants for the royal gardens, one of which was my home. The birch tree. I used to live here." I smiled.
"I can have your tree brought back here, but it would be a shame to lose such a close companion."
"Oh no. I love living at Cair Pareval and your recent company has been most enjoyable."
"Then I will be sure to visit you whenever I can." He smiled, running his fingers through his hair.
He kept to his promise, we often spent time together when he was not performing royal duties. I also got to know his siblings. I even gifted his sister some wood from my tree to make some new arrow shafts, then one day all four kings and queens just vanished from Narnia.
1300 lonely years passed, I retreated into my tree, fearing for my life when the Telmarines attacked Cair Paravel. Still I waited, hoping one day I'd see my friends again.
That day finally came, I heard faint voices approaching the ruined palace. Voices I remembered, slowly I emerged from my tree, still clad in the armour I wore while attempting to defend the palace.
The high king was the first to see me. "Y/N!" He exclaimed, running over and pulling me into a tight embrace.
"Your majesty" I greeted, before hesitantly returning the hug.
"Where are the others. What happened?" He questioned, pulling back and taking in my change of attire. "Why are you wearing armour?"
"Narnia was invaded. We all fought to protect the palace but it fell eventually. As did a lot of those you once knew. I retreated into my tree and waited for your return my Kings and queens." I explained, bowing to the royal siblings. "You have grown my king." I smiled, placing a hand on his cheek.
"And you are still as beautiful as ever." He sighed. I plucked a green leaf from my tree and wrote something on it, blowing it from my palm in the direction of the Forrest. "What was that?"
"A message to all remaining Narnians. The kings and queens of old have returned."
