New to the Enterprise, I have always wanted to transfer to this ship. I can't believe it, I've made it. I transferred as an assistant to the CMO Beverly Crusher, a second in command to her.
I was introduced to the crew and given the night to get my bearings and socialise. I found the best place to do this was the ships bar, Ten Forward. Unfortunately I also had to bring my young sister with me onto the enterprise. For the day she was at school with the other children but for now I have brought her with me with the hope that she too can meet new people.
"Go find a seat, I'll be over in a minute." I smiled, she quickly ran across the room.
I walked to the bar and bought some drinks. I looked around for my sister, I found her stood in front of a rather tall man in a gold and black uniform. "I'm sorry sir, is she bothering you?" I smiled, now up close I could see that his skin was an unnatural colour, his eyes, a bright yellow.
"Not a bother at all. A curious child. She simply ran into me." He spoke, his voice almost monotonous, but none the less smooth, quite pleasant to the ears.
"Doctor Y/N. I'll be in charge of keeping you alive should anything happen to Dr Crusher." I smiled.
"Unnecessary. I can not develop any form of ailment." He stated, almost like it was common knowledge. I just gave a confused look, "I am an android." He filled in.
"No way!" I exclaimed, "I thought you were some humanoid life form, I mean as an android you are alive and sentient but I genuinely thought you were organic." I paced around him. "Amazing." I stood in front of him, "forgive me. I am just fascinated. I would love to get to know you Lieutenant Commander." I smiled.
"Of course." He replied. I tapped my sister on the shoulder, making her turn to face me.
"Come on now. Let the lieutenant Commander be." I took her hand and lead her away.
A few weeks later I was sat in a small office, next to that of Dr Crusher, jotting some notes when an explosion when off. I ran out into med bay, expecting an influx of patients. In came a number of injured crew members, apparently something exploded in engineering but nearby decks were also effected. As other nurses and doctors took patients from crew members rushing them in I stood in wait Of a patient. I was about to help someone else when a familiar figure in a yellow shirt ran in, carrying my little sister in his arms. "Oh dear god!" I ran to an empty bed. "Data. Over here!" He gently placed the unconscious child on the bed. I immediately began tests, first searching for broken bones or ruptures in organs, then looking into any other minor damage. As I worked I questioned the Lieutenant Commander. "Where was she? Why wasn't she in the school?"
"She was on her way here, her classes had finished for today. It appears she was walking within the vicinity of the blast. I too was walking the same direction so I thought it only logical that I bring her to you." He stated.
"Thank you." I sighed, "your haste and lack of injury may have saved her life. Looks like she'll be okay. Broken arm from her fall but the young heal fast." I turned to a young nurse, "could you finish up here, I'll be assisting others." The nurse nodded and got to work bandaging my sister's arm.
As Dr Crusher and our team were working, I couldn't help but fell like I was being watched. I turned to see Data observing us all. "Doctor. Does Data often watch you work?" I questioned, grabbing some phials of medicine.
"Yes. He says that aside from Troi, our job is one of the most human ones on the ship. The ability to care and empathise with patients is something he finds fascinating."
"Oh. I suppose he would. Not being able to feel and all." I shrugged, walking back to my patients.
When all the others were treated I sat at my sister's bedside, unknowingly falling asleep sat there. I was awoken by a hand on my shoulder. I looked up into the bright eyes of the android. "Oh. Sorry Data. Am I needed again?" I stood up, brushing down my uniform.
"Dr Crusher asked me to escort you back to your quarters, to rest." I looked at my sleeping sleeping sister then back at Data.
"I can't leave her. I'm sorry Data."
"Curious. You appear to show the same maternal instinct as dr Crusher does for Wesley. However records indicate you have never had children."
"I'm her only family Data. Our parents died when she was very young I have to be like a mother to her." I smiled. "Not saying that I'd ever rule out having children of my own, she's enough for me for now I guess." I stood up, knocking on Dr Crusher's door. "Are you sure you want me to go? I can help with reports."
"Go. You're exhausted. I'll look after her and call you when she wakes up. Data see to it she's put to bed would you." She smiled.
"Thanks Doctor." I followed Data to my quarters. Upon opening the door I remembered what a mess the room was. "Please excuse... all of... this." I gestured to the room. Papers all over the floor, books splayed out on every desk, clothes on the backs of chairs. "We were studying, she's been learning basic biology." I picked up books and papers, placing them in piles on the desk. I was picking up more papers when they were gently taken from my hands.
"I believe Doctor Crusher gave you an order to go to bed, and me to ensure this."
"Yes. Sorry." I walked into my bathroom, taking my pyjamas and changing. When I walked out, the room was clean. "Data? Why did you clean?"
"You seemed like you would not want to sleep unless it was done. My being an android means I am both faster and more efficient than you. I am simply following the doctor's orders." He looked around, "if my doing this offended you in any way I am sorry."
"No no. It's okay. I just didn't expect it. Thank you." I walked over to my bed, climbing in. "You know you can go right?"
"I was instructed to ensure you slept."
"Heh. Androids." I smiled, "follows orders, almost to a fault." I mumbled. "Fine. If you're going to make sure I sleep come and make yourself useful." I patted the space next to me.
"Doctor?" He queried.
"Just do it." I smiled as he sat down, "just lay there." He laid stock still. I rested my head on his chest and one arm around his waist. "Computer, Project the night sky onto the ceiling. Earth, northern hemisphere circa... I don't know. Early 21st century." I smiled. "When I was a little girl my father and I used to do this. He'd talk to me about the stars back in this era, how people believed that depending which constellation you were born under it would determine your general character traits." I smiled, reminiscing. "He'd talk to me until I fell asleep."
"If you wish, I can relay similar information. If it will help you sleep." He stated.
"That'd Be most beneficial." I grinned. "Also. For an android, you're surprisingly comfortable." I laughed slightly as I began to fall asleep. I woke up to Dr Crusher calling my name over my communicator. "I'm here. Sorry doctor. I was asleep."
"I thought as much. She's awake and doing very well."
"Oh thank god. I'll be right down there." I quickly put on my uniform and made my way down to medical. To my surprise sat at my sister's bedside was the Lieutenant Commander. I watched for a moment.
"So you're like, a computer?" She asked.
"In the very loosest terms yes. I am an android." He corrected.
"Then why do you look strange? I thought androids were meant to look like people. Well that's what I've read anyway."
"Hold it Right there." I walked over, "Is That a nice thing to say to Mr Data? Would you ask Lieutenant Warf why he looks so different to you?" I stood with my hands on my hips.
"No. But Mr Warf is a Klingon and he's scary." She smiled, "Mr Data isn't. He's just another person."
"Mr Data is actually physically stronger than Lieutenant Warf, by a considerable amount." She looked at Data.
"He can't be. Mr Warf is much bigger and he's... not."
"Size does not always denote physical strength. Now. Seeing as you're up and alert, I say we can go back to our quarters. I also think you've taken enough of the commanders time. Do you have anything to say?" I spoke raising an eyebrow.
"Thank you for sitting with me Commander." She smiled, getting out of bed and taking my hand.
"Thanks Mr Data. For looking after her." I smiled.
"Not at all. It was quite enjoyable really." He smiled.
"Then perhaps we could do it again sometime." I suggested.
"I'd like that."
