Carson and Harry were on the quidditch pitch with Oliver Wood, the Gryffindor captain. They were going to be learning the basics of quidditch. Carson was better off than Harry. He knew how to play quidditch, but never actually did play. Harry on the other hand, had no clue what it was.

"Quidditch is easy enough to understand. Each time has seven players, 3 chasers that's you Carson, 2 beaters, 1 keeper and a seeker. That's you Harry. There are three kinds of balls." Oliver stated, as he picked up a red ball. "This one's called the Quaffle. Now, the chasers handle the Quaffle and try to put it through one of those three hoops." Oliver continued as he pointed at the three hoops.

"The keeper, that's me, defends the hoops. With me so far boys?" Oliver said, throwing the quaffle to Carson. He caught it before throwing it back to Oliver.

"I think so. What are those?" Harry asked, looking at an angry chained up ball. Oliver motioned to stand back and opened it.

"Might want to take this." Oliver said, handing Harry a beaters bat. They watched the ball soar off, before coming back. "Careful now, it's coming back." He said, as Harry hit it with the bat, and it soars off again.

"You'd make a good beater too Harry!" Carson said in awe.

Oliver grabs the ball and shoves it back into the box and comes back to the two boys, out of breath.

"What was that?" Harry asked.

"Bludgers. Nasty little buggers they are. But you're the seeker, so I only want you to worry about this... the golden snitch." Oliver says, handing it to Harry.

"The golden snitch is worth 150 points and when the seeker catches it, ends the game. Basically, catching the snitch is a secured victory." Carson answered Harry's questions, eager to share his knowledge about his favorite sport.

"That's correct Carson. The snitch is near impossible to see as well. That's what makes it hard. The teams have many points already before someone catches the snitch."

"Woah." Harry says, in awe of all of this information.

The next day in transfiguration, the first years were practicing the levitating charm. Much to Carson and Hermione's dismay, they were not partnered up with each other. Carson was with Harry, and Hermione was with Ron.

"One of a wizard's most rudimentary skills is levitation the ability to make objects fly. Uh, do you all have your feathers?" Professor Flitwick asked, Hermione and Carson raised theirs up for the professor to see as an answer.

"Good. Now, uh, don't forget the nice wrist movement we've been practicing, hmm? The swish and flick. Everyone." Professor Flitwick instructed, the rest of the class reciting the incantation.

"Good. And enunciate. Wingardium Leviosa. Off you go then." Flitwick said, sending them off.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" Carson said, the feather flying in the air. Carson smiled at the thought of doing it correctly.

"WingARdrium LeviosaR" Ron said, not saying it correctly and moving his wand violently. Hermione held her hand out, making him stop. Carson turned his attention to the two.

"Stop, stop, stop. You're going to take someone's eye out. Besides, you're saying it wrong. It's Levi-o-sa, not Leviosar." Hermione said, helping with the spell. He rolled his eyes at her.

"You do it then if you're so clever. Go on, go on." Ron said, not expecting her to do it right either. She shrugged her shoulders and recited the incantation and the wand movements. Her feather levitated in the air, as Professor Flitwick saw.

"Look! Mr. Marshall and Miss Granger have done it! 10 points to Gryffindor!" He said, the two friends shooting smiles at each other.

After class, Ron was ranting about Hermione in the corridors. "It's Levioooosa, not Leviosaaaar." Ron said, mimicking Hermione. Carson glared at him, but Ron made no effort to stop. "She's a nightmare, honestly. No wonder she hasn't got any friends!" He said, this time Carson speaking up.

"Shut up Ron! She's great once you get to know her! Not like you've tried. She's a whole lot better than you!" He said, giving Ron a death glare. He felt someone shove in front of him, and he soon realized that was Hermione. She had heard what Ron said.

Carson dashed off after her, stopping once she had gone in the girls bathroom. Carson stopped and thought for a minute, before putting his robe hood on, and walking in. Luckily, nobody was there except a girl crying in a locked stall. He immediately knew it was his bushy haired best friend. Carson went up and knocked on the door.

"Hermione! Don't listen to Ron! I'm your friend! You're bestest friend!" He said, hoping Hermione would come out.

"Go away Carson! I don't want to talk!" She said, her voice sounded like she was sad. Ron's words had really hurt her.

"Please Hermione! I'm your friend! You're my best friend in the whole world! Ron's just jealous he couldn't do the spell but you could because you're super smart!" Carson said, hearing the door unlock. Suddenly, Hermione had tackled him into a hug. He hugged her back and they stayed that way for a while. No words were spoken but the message got across the two of them.

They stayed in their hug, until they heard the mountain troll in the bathroom. Hermione screamed, Carson shoving her back into the stall as he took his wand out. "Stay there!" he said, before firing spells at the troll.

None of those spells worked, and the troll hit Carson, causing him to go flying. He heard a loud crack in his leg, and a scream from Hermione.

"CARSON!"

As if a miracle had happened, Harry and Ron ran into the bathroom, and Carson went to help them perform the levitation spell, on his broken leg. Once the troll was asleep, Hermione made a mad dash for Carson's side.

"Are you okay?!" she asked, enveloping him in a hug.

"I'm fine. My leg hurts like hell though." He said, trying to reassure Hermione. It wasn't working.

"You need to go to the hospital wing!" she said, as Professors McGonagall, Snape, and Quirrell walked in.

"Oh! Oh, my goodness! E-Explain yourselves, all of you!"

"Carson and Hermione didn't know the troll was here! They weren't at the feast because Hermione was crying in here and Carson was helping her. We came to get them and go back to the common room, but the troll was here!" Harry said, the other teachers nodding along.

"Be that as it may be.... five points to Gryffindor for helping a friend in need Mr. Marshall. And five points to the rest of you for sheer dumb luck." Professor McGonagall said, as Harry and Carson noticed the gash on Snape's leg. He covered it up and glared at the two. "Perhaps you ought to go...M-might wake up...heh" Professor Quirrell said meekly.

"Now, Miss Granger, please take Mr. Marshall to the hospital wing to get that leg fixed." She instructed, Hermione nodding and helping him get there.

Once his leg got fixed up, they both retired to the Gryffindor common room for the night. The four first years were now known as the golden quartet.
