That night, Harry and Carson slipped on the cloak to sneak into the restricted section. They made their way to the library and went into the restricted section. They took the cloak off and put their lamp down before exploring a bit.

"Famous fire eaters...fifteenth century fiends...Flamel..Flamel where are you?" Carson said, looking through the shelves as Harry picked up a locked book. He opened the book and a scream echoed out.

"A screaming book! Why would you open it if it were locked?!" Carson whisper yelled at Harry, before slipping the cloak back on the two of them.

"I don't know! I thought Flamel would be in there!" Harry said defensively. They both stopped talking once they saw Filch and Mrs. Norris, Filch's cat enter the room.

"Who's there?! You can't hide...I know you're in here! You cant hide from me!" Filch said, looking at the shattered lamp. Harry and Carson slipped by Filch in the cloak. "Who is it?! You cant hide from me!" he said, as they exited and went to find another room to hide. After overhearing Snape threatening Quirrell, they dashed into the nearest room.

They both took off the cloak and looked around. Harry was staring into a mirror. "Mum...Dad?" He asked, gaining Carson's attention.

"What's that Har?" Carson said, as Harry put a hand on his shoulder, looking away from the mirror.

"Come look! It's my parents!" Harry said, but his parents weren't there.

Carson looked in the mirror and did not see his parents. "Harry...they aren't there. I cant see them." Carson said, trying his best not to hurt his friends feelings.

"You look in the mirror! Maybe you'll see something." Harry said, stepping out of the way.

Carson looked into the mirror to see himself, but older. He was taller and his facial features were more defined. Everything seemed alright, until a girl came into view and kissed the older Carson right on the lips.

The girl turned to face the real Carson and she was holding the older Carson's hand. He quickly realized that the girl was Hermione. But Hermione's bushy hair was gone, and her hair was nice and wavy, she also had clear, tanner skin.

Her brown eyes were still beautiful, and they just became even more beautiful than before. It didn't look like the Hermione he knew, but at the same time it did. Her smile held the same happiness it did when she smiles at Carson now. They both looked very happy in the mirror.

"Woah...why is Hermione in the mirror?" Carson said, not realizing his mistake until he had said it.

"Hermione?!" Harry asked, shocked.

"Does this mirror tell the future or something?" Carson asked Harry.

"It cant. My parents are dead." Harry said, Carson patting his shoulder in hopes of comforting his friend.

The two friends went to bed, but not after showing Ron, who saw himself as head boy and quidditch captain. The three had gone to bed in a much better mood, ending the Christmas day perfectly, promising them sweet dreams throughout the night. Carson had dreamt of a life with Hermione. He really hoped that mirror showed the future.

Over the rest of the break, Carson and Harry returned to the room, to see the things that were in the mirror. Carson kept wanting to see what his life could be like with Hermione.

"Back again Harry, Carson?" Dumbledore said, as the two boys stood up and faced him.

"I see that you, like so many others, have discovered the delights of the mirror of erised. I trust you by now have realized what it does. Let me give you a clue. The happiest man on earth would look into the mirror and see only himself, exactly as he is." Dumbledore said wisely.

"So... it shows us whatever we want?" Harry asked, "Whatever we want?" Carson continued after Harry.

"Yes...and no. It shows us nothing more or less than the deepest, most desperate desires of our hearts. Now you Harry, who have never known your family, you see them standing beside you. But you Carson, see Miss Granger, your very best friend." Dumbledore said, earning stutters from Carson trying to object that statement, but Dumbledore continued.

"But remember this, Harry, Carson. This mirror gives us neither knowledge or truth. Men have wasted away in front of it, even gone mad. That is why tomorrow it will be moved to a new home, and I must ask you not to go looking for it again. It does not do to dwell on dreams, Harry, Carson and forget to live." He said, as the boys looked back in the mirror, knowing he was right.
