"Are you sure you two want to learn?" Professor Lupin asked the two boys inside of the classroom.
"Yes. Harry and I need to be able to defend ourselves if the dementors show up again." Carson explained to the professor.
"Yeah. This quidditch match makes twice now." Harry also explained to the professor.
"Very well. The spell I'm going to teach you is called the Patronus Charm. Ever hear of it?" Lupin asked the two boys. They both shook their head no, and he continued.
"A Patronus is a kind of positive force. For the wizard who can conjure one, the Patronus works something like a shield. The Dementor feeds on it instead of him." Lupin explained, as Carson nodded his head eagerly. He needed to be able to get rid of them.
"But in order for it to work, you must think of a memory. And not just any. This memory needs to be a very happy one. And powerful." Lupin continued, Carson trying to think of his happiest memory.
Was it the day he met Hermione on the train? Or the day he got sorted into Gryffindor? Maybe when Hermione came back from being petrified?
But there were two memories that knocked all of those out of the park. The day they had their first kiss, and when he asked her to be his girlfriend. But he could probably combine those two memories together since they both happened at the same time. As he was thinking, the necklace started shining, but only he could see it. Carson smiled, and decided to use the memory he had thought of.
"Got something boys?" Lupin asked as they both nodded. "Good. Let it fill you up. Lose yourself in it. Then speak the incantation: Expecto Patronum. Without your wand..."
"Expecto Patronum..." Both boys said together.
"Right then. Shall we? Harry, since you boggart was a dementor, we are going to have you stand in front of it, while Carson does the spell." Lupin explained to the boy, Harry nodding along unsure.
Harry stepped up front, as Professor Lupin opened the wardrobe and the dementor came out. Carson thought of the memory and said, "Expecto patronum!" and a silvery mist came out of his wand. The mist stayed for a bit, before dissolving as Harry and Carson got out of the way.
"Riddikulus!" Professor Lupin said, butting the boggart back into the wardrobe.
"Good job Carson! I'm impressed!" Professor Lupin praised, as Harry got ready for his turn.
"Concentrate, Harry. Concentrate..." Professor Lupin said as the dementor came out of the wardrobe.
"Expecto... Patronum..." Harry says, as his eyes roll back about to pass out. Harry's hand starts to tremble.
"Expecto... Expecto.." Harry said, before Professor Lupin stepped in front of him and the boggart changed.
"Riddikulus!" Professor Lupin cried, as the boggart went back into the wardrobe.
Professor Lupin pressed a chocolate frog into Harry's hand, encouraging him to eat it.
"Quickly." Professor Lupin said, as Harry took a bite.
"That's one nasty Dementor." Harry said, while biting on the chocolate.
"Boggart, Harry. The real thing would be much, much worse. Just out of interest, what were you thinking of? What memory did you choose?" Professor Lupin asked Harry.
"The first time I rode a broom." Harry said, thinking back on the memory.
"That's not good enough, Harry. Not nearly. What did you choose Carson?"
"When I asked Hermione to be my girlfriend and we had our first kiss." Carson answered, smiling at the memory.
"There's another. It's not happy exactly. I mean, it is. It's the happiest I've ever felt. But it's... complicated." Harry said to the professor.
"Is it strong?" Professor Lupin asked, Harry nodded his head.
"Then lets try it." The professor told Harry as he stepped back to the wardrobe. Lupin opened the wardrobe and the dementor came out.
"Think Harry, think."
"Just do it!" Harry said, shouting the incantation.
"Expecto patronum!"
The same silver mist came out of Harry's wand. He was shaking, but he held his ground. Soon enough, the dementor falters and professor Lupin shouts, "Riddikulus!"
The boggart went back into the wardrobe, and Harry spoke again.
"I think I've had enough. For today."
"Yeah, me too. I made good progress." Carson said, bringing him back into the lesson.
"Well done boys. Carson you may go, Harry stay back a moment." Professor Lupin tells the boys, as Carson leaves.
Carson went back to the Gryffindor common room and saw Hermione with all her different books sprawled out.
"Hey 'Mione." He said, sitting next to his girlfriend.
"Hi love. How were the dementor lessons?" She asked, eager for him to repeat some of the information so she could learn too.
As Carson explained how his lesson went, he didn't mention the memory he used. Hermione started writing bits of information down as they talked, before going back to her own assignments, but not before sharing a few kissed with her boyfriend before he went up to bed.
