The aurors and Fudge had rushed out of the room to search for Dumbledore while McGonagall escorted the boys back to the common room. The next day was when things got worse.
The four were sitting down at the Gryffindor table when a new education decree was posted. "By order of the ministry of magic: Dolores Jane Umbridge will replace Albus Dumbledore as the new head of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry."
She looked at the students smugly, and made an announcement. "My first act as your new headmistress is to form an inquisitorial squad led by Draco Malfoy. They will report directly to me about the things going on in the halls of this school."
Harry and Carson glared at her before she continued speaking, "Furthermore, our caretaker Mr. Filch has requested we bring back the old punishments, and I see no reason why we shouldn't."
Later that day, Carson and Ron were dressed in their quidditch robes, and Hermione and Harry were going to talk to Hagrid.
"Are you sure you can't go? Hagrid said it was important." Hermione asked, as they shook their heads.
"I'm the captain 'Mione. I have to be there, and we don't have any replacement for our keeper."
"Alright then. I hope you win. I love you Carson."
"Love you too 'Mione. Have fun with Hagrid!"
The two groups parted ways for now, Carson and Ron going to quidditch, and Harry and Hermione going to Hagrid.
The quidditch match ended, and soon Carson had to go to his career consultation with Professor McGonagall to assess his grades and see what he wanted to be and how to achieve the grades to take the classes that the certain career would need.
"Please sit Marshall. You're here to have a talk with me about your career thoughts. We do this so we can begin to aim for your courses over the next two years to prepare you for that career."
"Oh, yeah. Well I did think about being an auror. That seems pretty cool. Or maybe a healer."
"Auror or healer. Interesting Mr. Marshall. You'll need top grades for those two, but you've been achieving those grades for a while now. It's a challenging career path, but not without its rewards."
"Hem Hem"
"Now then Marshall, you'll need to concentrate on defense against the dark arts, potions, transfiguration, charms, and for being a healer herbology. Those are the general auror requirements, and herbology, potions, charms, transfigurations for a healer."
"Hem Hem"
"May we offer you a cough drop Professor Umbridge? Professor McGonagall was trying to tell me what I needed to be to become a healer or an auror and you keep distracting me."
"Stop with the cheek Marshall. But no thank you, Minerva, I was wondering if Marshall had the proper temperament to be an auror or healer?"
"Were you indeed." Professor McGonagall dismissed, turning back to Carson. "If you're serious in this ambition, Marshall, I would recommend concentrating on bringing up your potions and charms grades before your O.W.L.s. I dare say you've got enough time if you apply yourself. Lord knows you've consistently done well in defense against the dark arts. Professor Lupin..."
"Excuse me Minerva, but have you seen my note on Marshall's current grades in my class?"
"Yes, indeed I have."
"Then I think you will find that Marshall's grades have been consistently poor this year."
"Yeah, well try being an actual teacher you pink toad!"
"Mr. Marshall that is enough!" Professor McGonagall interjected, sending Carson a small wink.
"You apparently misunderstand me Dolores. I mean that Marshall has done well in every defense against the dark arts class taught by a competent teacher."
"Now that's a fact right there. Good one Minnie." Carson said, holding out his hand for a high five, one not being given to him by Professor McGonagall who just shot him a glare instead, "Got it. No high fives. I'll remember that."
"Please also remember that it is Professor McGonagall to you Mr. Marshall. Now, assuming that you've passed all your necessary classes, the ministry will put you through a number of character and aptitude tests."
"What's involved in them?"
"How you stand up under pressure, your perseverance and dedication, things of that nature. I assure you after all you've been through you will get through those tests."
Umbridge stood up abruptly, causing both to turn to her before speaking again, "Carson Marshall has no chance of ever becoming an auror!"
"Well that's fine Professor, I want to be a healer as well. I'll just go with that if I cannot be an auror!"
"I will assist Mr. Marshall in becoming an auror if it is the very last thing I do! I will coach you nightly in order to get the necessary grades."
Umbridge walked out with a huff and Professor McGonagall turned back to Carson. "That concludes our meeting Mr. Marshall."
"Thank you professor. May I get that high five now?"
"You may."
The two high fived, before Carson walked out of the room and went to the common room to meet up with Hermione.
