She startles awake suddenly and everything comes back to her at once.
She finds herself crying silently, slow, silent, awful tears.
"It's okay," a soft voice tells her.
Jenna?
"I'm sorry," she says, "They're still trying to figure out what happened and why...no one's trying to leave you alone, dear. I cacn stay with you if you want me too.
Mari finds the words stuck in her throat.
She finds herself starinh at the scars on her arm, hating how exposed she feels now that she's not wearing long sleeves.
But what can she do about it?
She can't go back in time, convince her younger self not to follow through with whatever they tell her to.
She can't fix everything she's done.
Before, she turned inward, pushing the pain back on herself again and again.
Now, she tries to turn outward, letting the pain be released in a better, better way.
It hasn't always worked, no.
But she is genuinely, genuinely trying not to fall into the same mistakes.
If nothing else, the scars she does have are starting to fade.
That's reassuring.
Even though she knows the memory of what she has done will stay with her for a long time, she feels somewhat relieved.
Somewhat.
Maybe things are looking up, finally.
