The words Josh had whispered to her echo around her mind.
Josh wants her to help lead the banditøs?
I trust you, he said, and she believes it.
And she's sure the others-Xavier, Rachel, and Olivia-would be willing to help.
"We all take care of each other here, alright? I don't need you to do a lot. Just keep an eye on things. Ask for help if you need it. You can do this, okay?" Josh had asked.
She'd nodded and watched him and Jenna thred their way through the crowd of banditøs-about to say goodbye, just in case they didn't return, she realized.
I hope they make it, Mari thinks.
They had a lot of ground to cover in a short time.
But this time it was just two of them.
Worrying will do no good, Mari thinks, and turns to the others.
She didn't remember them from her time in the city (no, she told herself, don't name it, don't go thre), and she couldn't be sure if she had seen them around the banditø's camp, but they had been accepting of her.
That was more than she could say of a lot of people.
She just wishes the task wasn't so...well, daunting.
Mari knew she wouldn't be alone-the four of them wouldn't even be alone.
The whole point of it, in fact, was so that none of them would be alone.
That stuck Mari as slightly odd, considering Josh had led the banditøs this far mostly on his own.
Well...
Okay, he'd probably had help.
And so would she.
He'd made sure of it.
Which was good, because she was afraid to ask for help.
It seemed like Josh understood that.
All things considered, that made perfect sense.
Mari was mostly just glad he had that woman to help him.
Jenna...was that her name?
Right, help in go back to Dema. Willingly.
Mari was afraid for him.
And all of the people who wouldn't be able to get out.
She wanted it to be possible, she really did. But, it was simply illogical.
Mari was afraid that not even Josh's fren Tyler would be able to escape.
She wished those thoughts would disappear.
She knew what Josh was risking.
And if he didn't come back...
No. Mari couldn't think that. She couldn't.
He would come back, him and his companion and Tyler, all of them would come back.
All three of them.
And in the meantime-Mari runs her fingers through her hair nervously. The flowers from the day before were gone-she'd taken them out before she slept.
Or, well, tried to sleep.
Her hand goes instinctively to the scars on her arm, hidden beneath her long sleeve.
She sees Josh in the distance, standing beside Jenna, saying something.
Then Mari looks at the banditøs nearest to here. She's standing a ways [Okay. Wow. That word right there-"way-" it didn't use to make me want to laugh, but now, well, I look up TØP stuff a lot, which led me to look up Fall Out Boy stuff, and that led me to Panic! stuff and also...yeah, you guessed it, MCR. So yeah, that's why] apart from them, distancing herself without even realizing it.
