"I don't believe it," Josh says, staring into the distance. "I just-"
A girl runs up to him, breathing heavily but looking happy.
Mari, Josh thinks, smiling slightly.
"You're safe!" she says. "I'm so glad you made it back! I was worried!"
She looks at Josh. "Can I give you a hug?"
"Of course," Josh says, and she does.
She looks at Tyler. "I'd offer to hug you, too, but I wouldn't want to make you uncomfortable or anything."
"It's okay," Tyler says, smiling a bit sadly. "Thanks for the offer, though."
"How are you doing?" Mari asks, and to Josh it seems like she understands.
He frowns, remembering that she does.
Tyler shrugs. "I..."
"I know," Mari says, "I know."
"But we're here with him now," Jenna says.
"Hi, Jenna!" Mari says. "I'm glad to see that all of you made it."
Jenna smiles.
"Thank you."
The rest of the evening is a blur.
People keep telling him how glad they are that all of them are safe.
There's a lot going on, and it takes a bit of time to adjust after all that quiet.
"You okay?" Josh asks his friend, who's looking a little bit anxious.
"I'm not sure," Tyler says, "But-I think that maybe, maybe I will be."
Josh nods.
And for once in what seems like a long time, things feel right.
