Someone's there, beside her.

Whispering affections in her ear.

Holding her tight, making her feel safe and loved and like nothing could possibly go wrong.

She wraps her arms around them, too, desperate to feel their closeness.

Desperate for love to creep into the crevices where darkness has started to take over.

Desperate for something, something, something to hold onto.

Throughout the night, this is what she tucks close to her heart.

But it does no use.

In the morning there is only a ghost of that, an empty shell.

And she is truly alone.

That doesn't surprise her.

She suspected it in some corner of her mind even as she played pretend.

Still, she thinks to herself as she forces herself to get ready for the next day...at least it kept her happy, if only for a little while.

But then that turns to anger.

How dare her mind play tricks on her to try to keep her happy? Why can't it just be that way on its own?

She doesn't know.

But can't do anything about it.
