Nico [now I can't stop thinking about Percy Jackson :D] watches them dig the grave.

It takes time, but he is patient.

He listens to the steady sound of shovelfuls of dirt being dug.

He watches as the dead man, still wearing his rebel clothes [you see what I did there? You see?] is thrown unceremoniously into the hole.

Watches as shovelfuls of dirt are dumped over him, until his face is completely obscured.

When the man has been completely buried Nico walks away. The rest of the bishops follow him. Their scarlet cloaks are the only thing of color in this gray landscape.

Nico looks back at the unmarked grave.

He feels a strange sense of pity.

Oh, Clancy, if only you had listened to me, child, he thinks. We could have saved you.

But there is nothing to be done, not now.

He chose his path like the misguided soul he was.

Nico must persuade another to make the right choice.

He strides across the city of Dema with purpose. He can see the effect he has on the inhabitants of the city. They afre afraid of him.

They are afraid he will come for them next.

And in time, he will seek out all of them, every one. Persuade them to follow the truth-that is his purpose, after all.

His and the nine.

But for now, there is one soul he has to convert, has to prove wrong, above the rest.

Nico finds himself smiling [CREEPY!!!!!!!! I just freaked myself out!!!!!] as he walks.

Soon a familiar pair of brown eyes stares at him from the darkness and the boy (they are all children in his eyes, after all) scoots back almost instinctively.

"Don't be afraid," Nico says quietly.

The boy nods, but Nico senses the fear in his eyes.

Nico touches the bandage on his arm, and the boy jerks back, flinching away from his touch.

"I'm not going to hurt you," Nico says.

The boy just stares at the ground, refusing to meet the bishop's eyes.

Nico unwinds the bandage so the still healing cut, angry and red, is exposed.

Nico pulls out a clean bandage and winds it around the boy's arm, covering the evidence of the boy's breaking rebellious spirit.

He does the same with the bandange wrapped around his hand.

Then when he is finished he says, "Come with me."

The boy looks up. For a moment or two it appears as though he might cry.

Nico places own cold hand[(the reason my brain just supplied for why his hands are cold-they are covered in blood oh my I might need to take a break] atop the boy's warm one.

He doesn't flinch away.

And he allows the bishop to take his hand in his own, pull him to his feet, and walk out into the city of Dema once more.

For once his head is not tilted towards the ground. It's like he's accepted his fate already.

Good, Nico thinks.

They were on the road to salvation.

Whew! This chapter was hard for me to write! It was pretty dark!!! What do you think about the way Nico is acting? Is him being nice even creepier than him being mad? I think so-especially once you realize the only reason he's acting that way is because Tyler's slowly starting to give into what the bishops want 😬.
