"Where are we going?" Tyler asks, sitting on the ground, drawing something in the dirt with a stick.

"I-um," Josh says, looking around. "I don't know."

"So...we're lost," Tyler says.

"Looks like it," Jenna says, sighing.

"Well, how wonderful," Tyler says, "We escaped the bishops only to wander around aimlessly."

"Please don't talk like that," Jenna says, "We're going to find our way."

"And how do you know?" Tyler asks.

"I don't," Jenna admits, biting her lip. "I don't."

"This wouldn't have happened if you hadn't come back for me," Tyler says, not looking up from whatever he's doing.

"I couldn't just let you die," Josh says.

Tyler looks at him, eyes hardened. "But you were perfectly fine leaving everyone else just trapped there."

"That's enough," Jenna says, "It would have been impossible. We barely got away as it was."

Tyler sighs and Josh just watches, feeling helpless.

"We got away, and for what? Even if we find our way back-" Tyler says.

"When," Jenna says, "Not if. Please, at least try to believe it-"

But Tyler isn't done talking. "Even if we find our way back, who's to say anything will be different?"

Josh doesn't know what to say.

His friend is voicing some of his own fears.

So he tries to take a step back from them for a moment.

"What are you doing?" he asks.

Tyler frowns, scraping the dirt and covering up whatever he had been drawing.

"Nothing," Tyler says quietly. "Nothing at all."

Which, of course, Josh highly doubted, but he didn't press his friend.

For a moment all of them don't say anything else.

"We have to come up with a plan," Jenna says finally. "They need us."

"Yes," Josh says quietly, thinking about Mari, about everyone they left behind, "they do."

"No, they don't," Tyler says. "No one needs me."

"Tyler-yes, yes we do," Jenna says. "Please-"

"I'm sorry," Tyler says quietly, "But I can't help it, you know."

"I know," Jenna says. "I know."

"I don't like this," Josh says suddenly, "staying in place for too long."

"They won't be able to find us out here," Jenna says, but there's still a bit of doubt in her voice.

"Yes, well, all the same..." Josh says, trailing off.

"Where would we go?" Tyler asks.

"Well," Josh takes a deep breath, thinks. "Don't laugh, I know this might sound crazy, but I just have a feeling that-"

He points to the right, "That we need to go that way. You trust me, right?"

"Yes," Tyler says quietly. "I do."

"So do I," Jenna says.

"Okay, then," Josh says. "Let's go."

I hope I'm not leading them astray, Josh thinks, as they walk in the fading daylight. I really hope not.

i actually didn't plan for them to get lost, but it works out well, i think.
