"Hey," someone says.
"Wh-what?" Mari asks. "Is everything okay?"
"I-wait. You're the one-you're crying. I don't know, you tell me."
"But I don't-I don't know," she says. "I was feeling bad...then I thought of all the good things that have happened since I l-left the city. I thought of that, but then...I don't know...I started thinking about some not-so nice things..."
"Do you want to talk about anything?"
Mari blinks back her tears and notices the girl's face.
She tries to think.
Rachel.
That's her name.
Right.
Mari's only talked to her a few times...but she seems like a nice person.
But...
"No," she decides, "I don't think I'm ready to talk about it, no. But...thanks."
Rachel nods.
"I always kind of wanted to talk to you," she says, "But I was too scared to."
"Really?" Mari asks.
"Yeah," Rachel says. "You're a cool person. I promise."
Mari shakes her head. "I'm not."
She feels the same old hints of panic, of hysteria, creeping up on her.
Doesn't dare let Rachel see.
At that point it doesn't matter how good her intentions are.
Mari wants to be left to her own flawed pieces...
Unsure of who to count on, or trust.
But it doesn't matter.
Rachel says, "Well, I have to go now. I promised I'd go help with something...I probably should go take care of that."
"Oh," Mari says, "Yeah. Sure. It's...it's fine. Maybe we can-"
The rest of her sentence trails away into nothingness.
"Talk again sometime?" Mari says anyway, even though Rachel's already gone.
Mari sighs.
She hadn't wanted Rachel to stay...but now that she's gone, she wishes she had.
"Why am I always so complicated?" Mari asks herself.
She has no idea, none at all.
"She probably doesn't even care," Mari says. "Not at all."
Stop it! she tells her brain. Stop being so mean.
But telling her thoughts to stop moving so fast, that's impossible.
That, she knows. Far too well.
