Tyler is alone in the city of Dema. He can't remember who he was before then. All he knows now is trying to survive in this world. He sees others around him who are struggling too, and he wants to help them. But he can't. He can't even seem to help...
Tyler has even less of an appetite than usual. He just stares blankly at the gray, nearly tasteless mush in front of him. Part of him knows he should be glad for the extra food-it only happens once a week, after all-but that part of him isn't strong enough to overcome the larger, uncaring part.
He notices the empty gazes of the other two seated at this table. They don't talk.
None of them do.
It's not that they can't. They just won't. Like him.
He can feel his mind drifting away from this reality and doesn't try to stop it.
He's surprised what he finds himself thinking of.
"Tyler," he imagined Josh saying.
At least, he's pretty sure he's imagining it. It's hard to be sure.
But he doesn't acknowledge his best fren's voice. It's too painful.
"Tyler," Josh says again. "I know you can hear me."
Tyler doesn't say anything.
Josh sighs. "Please...just, eat something, okay? You need to keep your strength up."
Tyler just glares at him.
Why? he's asking with his eyes.
Josh sighs again. "Listen, I know it's hard to understand this here, in Dema, but the truth is-"
Tyler is jolted back to reality when he sees people getting up and arranging themselves in a silent, perfect line.
The truth is what, Josh? he wants to yell. What?
But his fren isn't there anymore. It's just Tyler now.
The mark on his neck makes it hard to breathe and the scene before him starts to blur. The small, dimly lit room feels like it's closing in, trapping him.
He stares hard at the emotionless faces of the workers he sees cleaning. It's the only way to keep the tears he feels collecting from falling as the scarlet robed figures lead him and the rest on. Eventually he has to turn his head. So he stares at the floor like it holds the secrets to the universe.
There's nothing unique about that. Everyone else is doing the same.
They're as broken as he is.
[I feel like the mood here is pretty somber, deep so far. So I'm going to include this picture in here, just in case you're feeling a little sad. It's slightly random, but I saw it and thought it was funny]
