Her memories seem to be almost faded around the edges. Still there, but not completely accessible.
Like a half-forgotten melody that won't completely drift out of her mind.
For a split second that makes her smile. Then it makes her think of Tyler, and her mood darkens.
While she was in the city she found herself thinking of him so often. But it didn't matter. They may as well have been in completely different worlds; their paths never intersected.
Until briefly, they did.
For a few seconds, a few, amazing, glorious seconds, she truly believed everything would somehow turn out all right.
She really should have learned her lesson by then.
The degree to which the bishops [KNIFE TRICK LØL] controlled their subjects was so much more than simply disliking it when they undermined their rule, even a little bit.
So when as many of them that did join the rebels and tried to leave, all at once, it was as though all of their worst fears had come true.
Oh, Ty, she thinks, why did you have to be so determined?
He was so brave, she can't deny that.
But she's afraid the last time she will ever have seen him was him turning away from the familiar yellow figures, wearing the symbol of light, and turning back to the dark that has tried, so many times, to pull him under.
"Jenna?" Josh's voice pulls her out of her thoughts and she curses herself for being so selfish.
Of course Josh was affected by Tyler's absensce as well.
"Thank you," he says, and she's confused for a moment.
"For what?" she asks.
"For supporting me all of those times," Josh says.
She nods. "Of course. I...I do care about you, you know."
"Y-yeah," Josh says. "I know."
She tries to think of something to say, something that will keep their conversation going.
But she can't.
So it fades away into nothingness, and quiet descends over them.
Quiet that seeing the imposing structure of Dema in the distance most certainly doesn't help quell.
But.
They're still together.
They're still...
She blinks, trying to remember where her train of thought was going.
They're still there for each other.
Right?
Surely...
Surely that, and everything the yellow they're wearing stands for...
Surely that counts for something.
Honestly, I forgot about this little chapter. it as buried under a bunch of drafts, but I found it, polished it up a little bit. If you notice, the closer they get to Dema, the more...interesting things get.
