—-Loki—-
We finally arrive at S.H.I.E.L.D's medical ward and get out of the Quinjet. I'm sad to see that Sam's anxiety makes a reappearance as the door to the Quinjet is lowered. She had been calm enough to smile and joke during the ride here. Though she had regained a bit of composure, I still didn't dare question what caused her to panic, not yet. I know she needs some time to relax and reset before we talk about anything that could trigger her anxiety about whatever that was again.
I won't push her I know better, it's better if I wait a while. She may even bring it up herself without prompting. As we exit the jet, the families and close friends (assumingly emergency contacts) of the people we rescued are there waiting. Suddenly Hiddleston takes off in a full on sprint towards a group of people.
"Chris!!"
"Tom!! I'm so glad you're okay!"
I see Sam's nerves lessen slightly with a smile as she watches Tom hug the other man then turn his attention to the group exchanging hugs with them too before being whisked away by the medical staff for evaluation. When Sam spots the staff she immediately puts me between her and them.
I take her hand then look back at her as we continue walking into the building. She looks panic-stricken, it's understandable as she's already on edge from her previous panic attack. I lean down slightly so she doesn't have to look up at me.
"Don't be afraid darling, it'll be over before you know it, then I promise we'll have a traditional Midgardian Friday night when we get home."
She nods still looking apprehensive about the situation she looks at the plain tile floor of the hallway we're standing in as if captivated by its beauty trying to hide her nervousness. I lift her face gently so I can look her in the eyes.
"I'm right here, you're safe. Whatever is causing your fear can't hurt you, not these doctors, not whatever sparked it in the Quinjet, nothing. I promise."
She responds only by nodding slightly then taking my arm with both hands as if it were a comfort item and allowing me to lead her into one of the examination rooms a doctor is beckoning me into, the doctor looks slightly confused at first by her joining me in the room as we sit down but upon a closer look at Sam the doctor recognizes who Sam is.
This doctor had worked with Sam before back when she was detained here. She was actually one of the ones Sam had gotten slightly more comfortable with. I run my fingers through Sam's hair trying to comfort her and the doctor smiles slightly at me, seeing for herself how we're still as seemingly inseparable as we were when Sam left to come live with me in New Asgard.
"All we have to do is a simple blood test and CT scan to make sure everything's hunky dory. We just need to make sure those teleporters didn't give you cancer or scramble your DNA."
I roll my eyes at the thought of me being brought down by an ailment like cancer Midgard is the only realm in the eight that seems to have this issue. It's a waste of time and resources to use them on myself or Thor. However, I would like to know for certain Sam is free of the ailment as I don't know if Mjölnir has made her impervious to the disease or not.
It should have but one can never be certain with experimental enchantments such as the one Odin placed on Mjölnir. Sam flinches then tenses up as the doctor makes a swift move towards the door to retrieve the proper supplies for the blood test. I look at her to notice she's on the verge of tears due to her anxiety. 'Of course!' 'The needle!' 'How could I be so caught up in my own thoughts as to forget?!'
"Hey now, easy mortal, you just faced off against a six armed woman wielding four swords, one regular armed woman with a needle is no match for you."
I see a very small hint of a smile cross her features before it disappears and her expression turns to fear as the door to the examination room opens. Sam let's out a small cry then makes herself very small almost disappearing behind me because of the doctor's sudden entrance. The doctor looks at me apologetically seeming sad that she caused Sam distress. I hold up one finger to her in a gesture to just give me a minute before turning back to my wife. I speak softly.
"Shhhh Mortal, it's alright all you have to do is let her see your arm for a minute, she's not going to hurt you I promise. She just needs to make sure you're okay."
She looks past me to the doctor tentatively, I can see recognition in her expression the doctor must see it too and she speaks softly matching my volume and keeping her movements slow and hands in Sam's line of sight.
"It's ok Sam. I won't do it until you're ready for me to, unfortunately I do have to at some point but we can take this at your pace. Alright?"
The staff must have had training on how to deal with patients suffering from anxiety and trauma after we left because before they didn't seem to know what to do. Sam nods and doesn't move for a few seconds then after a few deep breaths she shakily holds out her arm squeezing my hand tightly as she does.
The doctor is careful with her movements as she preforms the task. Sam buries her face into my side. When the doctor is about to inject the syringe Sam's breathing becomes fast and uneven but she doesn't move her arm. I move my thumb over her hand that's holding mine comfortingly. As the doctor inserts the needle into the proper vein Sam lets out a muffled cry that threatens to break my heart. I lean down closer so I can speak right into her ear.
"Easy, the worst part is over just breathe darling."
She nods again unable to actually speak due to her terror. She makes an effort to calm herself. The doctor finishes up having had no trouble collecting the blood needed and bandages the small incision on her arm all the while being as gentle as possible.
"...And we're done, your turn Mr. Odinson."
I can feel Sam relax at the realization that it's over though she doesn't move from her current spot pressed right up against me. She only moves her arm so she's holding onto me with it. I kiss the top of her head. I look back up to see the doctor waiting expectantly with a vibranium hypodermic needle.
I roll my eyes once again, it's ridiculous that Fury mandates Thor and myself to do this. We've explained to him how Asgardian and Jotun physiology is impervious to most cancer causing radiation on several different occasions. Nevertheless I change my armor to something sleeveless.
The doctor draws my blood she then leaves giving Sam some time to calm down before coming back to do the CT scan. Sam is still tense but not as much so now and the CT scan goes far smoother than the blood drawing. Finally we head home with the promise of receiving a call should they find anything abnormal.
