Michael and (Y/n) were walking down the street on their way home from the park before they saw a cat sitting outside in the bushes. "Look! There's a cat!" Michael whispered, going over to pet the cat. They pet the cat for a few minutes before they had to keep walking, the cat getting up and walking right next to Michael. "The kitty's following us! Can we keep it?" Michael asked, and (Y/n) looked at Michael, the cat right next to him.

"I don't know Michael; mummy won't be happy if we do." (Y/n) told him, and Michael shook his head. "But he likes me! See?" Michael defended, the cat pressing his head on the boy and purring. (Y/n) did like the cat, but he didn't want to be on the couch tonight, and let Michael get attached to the cat and then have to let him go. "The cat probably has his own family." (Y/n) tried, before Michael looked at the cat's neck. "But he doesn't have a collar. That means he belongs to nobody, and we can have him!" He tried, before his father shook his head again.

"He likes us! We'll be mean if we don't keep him! I gave him a name!" Michael told his father. "Yeah? What's his name?" (Y/n) asked. "Smokey. Because he looks like smoke!" He announced, making (Y/n) chuckle. "How do you know what smoke looks like?" (Y/n) asked. "When you burned my mac and cheese because mummy was at the beach for her movie and couldn't make it for me. The smoke came out of the pot and the alarm went off!" The pair kept walking home with the cat right next to Michael, nobody mentioning anything about the story that had just been told.

By the time they got home, Smokey was perched on Michael's shoulder. Emma was sitting in the living room, looking up when she heard the door open. The first thing she noticed was the cat on Michael's shoulder. "Hello, how was the park and why is there a cat on his shoulder?" Emma asked, not missing a beat. "Can we keep him? Please? He likes me! I named him Smokey cause he's gray and looks like smoke! We found him in the bushes!" Michael told his mother, the cat pressing his head into Michael's neck. "Did this cat have a family of his own?" Emma questioned, and Michael shook his head. "Nope! He didn't have a collar so that means we can keep him!" He told his mother, and Emma and (Y/n) shared a look.

Neither parent wanted to tell Michael they couldn't keep the cat he had grown attached to, but the family was always moving to LA or London depending on if they had movies to film or not, so they couldn't keep dragging the cat back and forth to different places. "Michael...we can't keep the cat." Emma started, going over to the boy. "We have to take him back." Michael shook his head and started his argument. "But Smokey doesn't have anywhere to go back to! I'll take good care of him! He followed me home! He wants to be here!" He defended, Smokey going over and sitting on the couch. "See? He likes it here!" Emma and Michael sat down next to Smokey, and the cat sat on his lap.

"We're going back home to LA soon Michael, Smokey can't go on the airplane. He won't be able to go with us..." Emma explained gently, trying not to make her son sad because that was the last thing she had wanted to happen and hated it when he cried, especially when it came to things like this when he couldn't comprehend the situation. But Michael shook his head again trying to deny that he couldn't keep Smokey the cat.

"We can drive there!" The boy argued. For a six-year-old, he was pretty creative on trying to convince his parents to let him keep Smokey. "You can't drive to LA; you have to take a plane. LA's across the ocean." (Y/n) chimed in, also sitting down next to Michael. "But he likes me! He'll be sad if we take him back! Smokey will miss me!" He mentioned, hugging the cat on his lap.

After twenty more minutes of (Y/n) and Emma trying to convince their son that they couldn't keep the cat he had found, a lot of tears were shed by Michael, and they ended up going to the pet store to get cat food and everything for Smokey, Michael's new best friend and the family cat.
