Chapter 28: What Happened?

El's pov

I felt something as my eyes were closed. I wasn't asleep. I felt a movement as I was holding max's unconscious hand.

My eyes opened immediately. I looked over at max. She was looking around checking where she was. Then she looked at me. I was speechless the seconds she looked around because I couldn't believe it.

She finally looked at me. Hers and my eyes light up. "Max! Oh my god!" I said standing up and hugged as much as I could since she was laying on the bed,plus I didn't want to hurt her.

I felt tears in my eyes. Happy tears this time. "hey.." she quietly said smiling but tiredly. I pulled away with tears in my eyes. "Are you okay?" she asked. I sadly chuckled. "are you asking me if I'm okay? Are you okay?" I asked her.

She smiled. "I think so, why am I at the hospital?" she asked after realising where she was. "Oh... don't you remember what happened?" I asked nervously. She looked away to think.

"Oh... Neil?" she asked not sure if she remembers correctly. I nodded. Her mom woke up by our voices immediately.

"Oh my god! Maxine!" she said standing up immediately and hugged her. "how are you feeling?" she asked max. "I don't know to be honest" max said.

Max's mom shook Billy as well. Billy started crying. He smiled hide when he saw her and walked over to hug her. "Why is everyone so surprised-wait.." she said but then paused.

"how long have I been sleeping? What's going on? I don't remember much-" max said. "Hold on max, we'll tell you" Billy said. Max nodded. She squeezed my hand.

"So.. That night when Neil escaped and kidnapped you and el.. He shot you" Billy explained calmy and seriously. "oh... I remember, right" max said.

"We called an ambulance but they were taking too long.. At some point you were unconscious and we thought you uh-and hopper did cpr on you before you die, but we had to take you to the hospital on our own since they wouldn't come" Billy said

"oh yeah.. I don't remember anything after though" max said. "that's because the doctors were checking up on you and they then did a surgery to get the bullet out of your stomach, where you've been shot. You got into coma because you must have hit your head when Neil got you" max's mom said.

"I don't remember hitting my head" max said. "yeah obviously" Billy said as max rolled her eyes. "How long have I been in coma?" max asked as she looked at me.

I felt my eyes getting watery at the thought of what happened those days when she was in coma...

I looked at her. "4 days" I replied. She rubbed her thumb on my knuckles gently as she looked at me with a worried look on her face. "oh.." she whispered. "I'm sorry" she quietly said. "For what?" I asked. "making you worry" she said.

We all looked at each other. "Max.. It's not your fault.. We all love you-" Billy started. Max looked at me. "And of course we've been worried sick but we're glad you're okay now" Billy said.

I didn't say anything, still trying to process that my girl..is finally awake. "oh.." she said. "we'll leave you two alone, I'll call the others they're so worried as well, we'll be back" max's mom said as her and Billy walked outside. And and I nodded.

We both looked at each other when the door closed. I was so happy she was okay. I couldn't help but let out a sob. "sorry.." I apologised wiping my tears away sniffing. "Hey... Its okay..I'm okay now" she said holding my hand tightly.

"I thought I lost you.. I was praying every day" I said with tears in my eyes. She looked at me sadly. "have you been here.. Every day?" she slowly asked. I nodded. "oh.." she quietly said, sort of shocked.

"have you gone to school?" she asked. I shook my head. "Oh.. did you stay here all day?" she asked. "yeah..of course" I said. She smiled softly at me.

I smiled back wiping some tears away with my sleeve. Max leaned closer to me and wiped tears that kept streaming with her thumbs gently. I missed that.. I missed her touch. Her warm hands. Her smile. Her..

I leaned into her touch. I never wanted her to let go. "I'm okay now baby, please don't cry" she softly said as I noticed her eyes watery. I nodded.

"Where's hopper?" she asked. "He's at home, he was at work all day while I was at the hospital with your mom and Billy in the hospital waiting for you to wake up" I said.

She looked at me in awe. "You must have missed a lot at school" she said. I laughed a little making her confused. "what?" she asked laughing along a little confused.

"max.. You really think I give a shit about school when my.. girlfriend was literally in coma?" I said. "I don't know" she shrugged slightly smiling.

"Since when do you curse?" she asked after a second processing what I just said. I raised my eyebrow. "Since you" I joked smirking. She laughed. I missed that.. Laughing with her. I hadn't laughed or smiled truly since max got into coma.

Of course the boys tried to make me smile but I wasn't feeling it. Every thing max does makes me smile. Just her as a human being. "I love you" I accidentally let out as my eyes were widened.

She told me she loved me when she was about to.. Die, I said it back but I always thought. What if she didn't mean it? Over thinking as always.

Her eyes soften as she gave me a warm smile. "I love you too" she said. I smiled widely, I couldn't help but blush.

"god.. I missed you so much you can't imagine" I whispered looking at her in awe with a smile. She smiled back. "I missed you too, I was basically sleeping but yeah" she said laughing slightly as I laughed as well.

Max's mom and Billy came back. "I called hopper since yout friends are sleeping, he's on his way now" max's mom said. Max smiled. Max nodded smiling.
