"You have to imagine it Jorah" The facilitator explained "In this situation, you feel like the person you love the most in this world has betrayed you.How do you feel? What emotions should you tap into?"
Jorah furrowed his brow. They'd been working on this scene for the last twenty minutes but he wasn't getting it right. He was still unable to channel the correct emotions.
"You need to connect with the character." the acting coach instructed.
Jorah nodded.
In today's workshop they were tackling emotional scenes. Unlike other days where the room was filled with laughter and silliness, today things were particularly serious .
He and Nine were enacting a scene. He looked at the script and exhaled sharply.
"How could you do this to me?" Jorah recited his lines. "I thought you loved me."
"I do love you." Nine, in character, replied.
"Liar." Jorah spat
"Stop." the acting coach intervened. She sighed and bit her thumb. "I need to feel your hurt and your anger." she told Jorah."Haven't you ever felt hurt and angry before?" she asked. "Hasn't anyone in your life hurt you so deeply that you were just beside yourself, not knowing what to do?"
Jorah's grip on the script tightened, causing the veins on the back of his hand to stand at attention.
Nine glanced at Jorah's hand.
"Can I suggest something?" Nine offered.
"Go ahead." the facilitator allowed.
"How about I try it with someone else?" he suggested. When Jorah's eyes widened in shock, Nine ignored him. "Perhaps if he saw someone else do it, it might help."
Bastard. Jorah fumed inwardly.
The woman nodded, "It's worth a try." She looked around the room. "Gage. Please play the part of Landon in this scene."
Gage stood and walked over to take Jorah's spot.
"Same lines." The facilitator instructed. Gage nodded.
"How could you do this to me?" Gage recited the lines with no script. "I thought you loved me."
"I do love you." Nine held Gage's gaze.
"Liar!" Gage screamed. "You never loved me..." his bottom lip quivered and his eyes watered. "You only loved yourself. If you ever---ever loved me, you would never have done this."
He and Nine held each other's gazes, Gage's eyes brimming with unshed tears.
"And cut!" the acting coach ended the scene. The onlookers applauded with Norris looking particularly impressed."Good job you two."
Gage nodded, wiping the corner of his eye before returning to his place. When he looked at Jorah there was a shadow of a smile on his lips.
Jorah looked from Gage to Nine.
"We're going to have to work on it a little bit more Jorah." the acting coach informed him.
Jorah nodded and silently took his seat. His usual confidence was nowhere in sight. For the first time since he'd begun this project, he could feel his inadequacy as well as the phantoms of his birth.
His other projects hadn't demanded these kinds of emotion. He was used to - shoot, scale a wall, big explosion, bed scene, car chase, kill the bad guy, the end. He never had any need to tap into any reservoir of emotions. He'd long learned, some emotions were useless so he'd only kept the useful ones, like anger.
