Carole turned the deep purple velvet box over and over in her hands. She knew this box very well. It bore the insignia of one of the most expensive jewellers in the country. By the size, it didn't take much to guess what it was.
Holding that object in her hand, she was filled with contempt. How could he? She clicked her tongue in disgust.
This box. She knew that whatever it contained was not meant for her but for him. That boy.
An image of Nine flashed into her head.
Carole looked at Jorah with contemptuous eyes. He had yet to regain consciousness and was still heavily bandaged while hooked up to various machines.
He didn't look so high and mighty now with his sharp words and cold eyes. He was battered, swollen and defenseless. Who would know, just by looking that this was the handsome Logan Eren, heir to one of the nation's largest fortunes?
She walked languidly to Jorah's bedside and thoughtfully tilted her head to the side after glancing at the box again.
"I don't need to ask you, I suppose." she spoke to the person whom she knew would not respond. "This is for him." When she looked at the box again, she was tempted to hurl it away as though it would take all of Jorah's feelings for Nine with it and end it all.
That's what it represented to her. His feelings. His love for and devotion to this man.
"I bet if you hadn't had that accident you would have given it to him by now. " She looked from the ring to the owner. "Or were you waiting for some special occasion to give it to him?" A dry laugh sounded from her throat. "You could never love me but you fell so easily in love with...with a man."
It was a very painful truth.
Carole sighed. "No matter. You're lying there like this..how funny. He's not here. I'm the one by your side" She gently caressed his cheek, feeling proud of herself. She'd come just in time to use the fiance card. That was what had given her the edge. It was a small, unexpected victory that she had secured.
As for him, he had to stay behind, sick with worry. They were two men. Logan belonged to her.
She hadn't come this far and done all the things she'd done to just let him go. It would never happen. She had spent many years thinking about her life as the Eren daughter-in-law. The Erens had no more sons so the title of the Eren daughter-in-law was even more coveted.
After idly caressing that box , Carole finally opened it. She audibly gasped when she saw its contents.
Sitting in the middle of that cushion, that ring shone mockingly at her.
With a trembling hand, she took it out. There were 9 yellow diamonds encased. Those nine diamonds were sandwiched in blood red diamonds that sparkled with brilliant luster
She twisted the item this way and that for greater scrutiny. When she peered inside, she noticed something was inscribed.
I am your protector.
Carole scrunched her brows. Her fury blazed once more and that sickening feeling was back as she clenched that piece of jewellery in her dainty palms.
What was this? An engagement ring? Some token to commemorate their love?
He was his protector? How ridiculous. How could he protect anyone when he was lying there like that?
She looked at Jorah and a new wave of hatred surged within her to know that he'd bought this item for Nine.
Holding the ring, contemplated what to do with the fine piece of jewellery before slipping it on her own ring finger.
