So Far So Good by Thornley~
Adam looked down with worried eyes as the fox at his feet whined, all laid down on the floor with his fluffy ears down. Evan didn't even bat an eye at the obvious display of sadness. They had found a clearing a few minutes away from the city, and the warrior had gotten down from the horse to tell the fox that it was now free to leave as it had healed. However, contrary to their expectation, the fox didn't look the least happy, and had even started to whine sorrowfully while putting its belly on the ground.
The forest was oddly loud, like the animals were expressing their discontentment. Birds were chirping angrily, squirrels were answering them with incomprehensible curses and the leaves of the trees were shaking from too much emotion. A cold breeze had started to blow their way, making the men shiver slightly. The cold would only grow as winter approached, and food would become scarce. A lone monster would surely become prey for the predators and its fate would be sealed quickly as the strongest always won. Somewhere not too far, a loud roar followed by an howling sound were heard, and Adam had to hold back a flinch from the way the second sound was cut off too fast, surely from the monster having his throat torn apart.
"Evan..." Adam started to say, only to see the unbothered face of the giant morph into one of warning as he guessed what his next words were going to be. The warrior didn't know what to do. He wanted to make the fox happy again, but it would mean making his bear angry and anxious. Adam understood that Evan's attitude was only because he feared that his place would be taken by the fox. It was an irrational fear, of course, but Adam knew what it was like as he had himself experienced it.
Seeing his lover so torn between both of them, Evan knew that the fox had taken a special place in Adam's heart in the last few days of their journey. He may have no feeling whatsoever for the creature, but he had so many for his hedgehog that it was starting to burden his mind to see him so anxious like this. The warrior got down on one knee, his skin becoming cold as the moist ground seeped its way through his pants. The grass lightly tickled his palm as Adam put one hand on the ground to be able to reach the other one toward the fox's muzzle. With a gentleness he didn't know he even had, Adam passed his fingers on the animal's head. The soft fur warmed his freezing fingers as he scratched the beast behind its ear. A low sound, seemingly like a cat's purr, reached the warrior's ears, making him smile.
"Sorry, bud. You can't come with us anymore. I'm sure you will find a family somewhere and maybe o-one day, our path will cross again." Adam said, his voice cracking slightly in the middle of his sentence as he remembered all the times he had to part with something or someone in his childhood. It was funny how he could never keep anything. Some were stolen, like many of his clothes, some broken, like his teddy bear, and others just vanished without a trace, like his mother. Even Evan would one day disappear, because that was just how things were around him.
Maybe the giant would find another better lover, as it wasn't that hard, or he would be killed by a monster on a raid. Both options were painful, but so realist and clear in Adam's mind that he felt his throat constrict against his will.
The warrior took a deep shaky breath, as he cursed himself. Why was he on the verge of fucking crying for god's sake!? He wasn't some kind of hormonal teenager that had tears sprouting out of their eyes even with just a gust of wind! He had gone through the worst, he could handle another separation! Exasperation filled his body and with another curse, Adam violently stood up, making the fox flinch back in surprise and step on a flower. The warrior raised his fists to his eyes, furiously rubbing them and hitting his face a few times to cool down.
"Pup." Evan stepped in, taking the warrior's fists into his hands and holding them far from Adam's face. The fox had started to paw at its master's pants too, trying to stop him from harming himself any longer.
The giant looked at his partner's puffy face, both from holding down his tears and from the beating he gave himself. He could see Adam's nose sniffing slightly, be it because of the cold wind or because of emotion, that he couldn't tell. A frown formed on his face and he had to bite his tongue to keep himself from lashing out at the man. Adam didn't deserve a scolding, even though the dominant in him wanted to spank the warrior for injuring his own body, he needed to be comforted. Since the first time he had seen his master, Evan knew that the man was fragile. Even a punishment may be too much, so he never had any thought of punishing him in the near nor far future. He would need to hold back his impulses, because Adam had gotten enough punishment as it is.
Of course, if Adam really did something bad or acted like a brat, then maybe he would let go of his rule, but he was pretty unconvinced that the warrior would be able to do so. Maybe with enough healing and time. Then, he would gladly punish him with all the love he deserved.
"Don't harm yourself." Evan grunted, still wanting to warn his master even though he wouldn't take action. The warrior blinked owlishly before looking at both his fists, still held tightly in Evan's grip. His eyes were still bloodshot, but at least his tears had been dried by the breeze and his throat had released its painful grip around his breath. His bangs swayed in the wind and some got into his irritated eyes, making him squeeze his eyelids to get rid of the water that had started to form again there. All the while, Evan surveyed his every move like a predator, looking for any indication that Adam was going to rebel or harm himself again. After the wind finally stopped and let Adam open his eyes again without fearing another hair attack, the warrior looked up into the giant's eyes, seeing the worry in them. His heart squeezed at the look he was getting and he mentally swore to be more cautious.
"S-sorry, I didn't realize what I was doing." The giant frowned even more at Adam's words, considering just locking up the man forever in a tower far away and chaining him to the bed so he couldn't move, all members in the position of a star. That way, he wouldn't do something like that ever again. Still, he shook the thought away. It surely wouldn't make Adam happy. Maybe at the beginning, because his hedgehog seemed to have a primal play kink, but after a few nights, he would surely grow bored. If not for the fear of making the warrior unhappy, then Evan would have done it without hesitation.
"Anyways, let's just leave. Maybe it will go on its way after seeing us walking away." Adam said, looking unbothered, but Evan could see and feel the anguish seeping out of the man's every pore. As if it could understand, the fox whined louder before snarling, rubbing its body against the men's legs as a cat would do to beg for a petting. Evan thought hard for a good minute, allowing himself to weigh the pros and cons before saying anything that he would regret. He wasn't one for empty words. If he had to say something, it would be something meaningful, not said on the spur of the moment. He may need to take responsibility for a long time depending on what he was going to say.
"Fine, let's keep it."
Hey dear readers, happy they kept it ?
Maybe it will get a name!? Do you have any suggestions?
