Ben raised his hand and the exclamations of his men quieted down until not a single sound was heard apart from the rugged breath of the men who ran on their way here. He waited a few minutes in silence, asserting his men with his piercing gaze, looking them up and down to evaluate their clothes.
Evan and Adam waited beside him, knowing that the commandant was doing his commandant things like exercising pressure on his men for no reason. Just kidding, they knew it was to make sure his men were already in top shape and ready for war at any moment. Sloppy armor could cost a man's life, it was no small matter.
"Alright, I see that you are all ready and have learnt your lesson from last time. Rest." Ben ordered in a booming voice and all the soldiers dropped their weapon, still standing straight like a pole. Adam had to hold himself back to say they weren't exactly resting.
It wouldn't have been appropriate.
The head warrior then went on to explain the situation to his men, the soldiers all nodding at his words and glancing from time to time at the two punny beings beside their commander. It really puzzled them how such weak and small beings could go to war and possibly win. It was no wonder that they had come to them for help, and having heard who Evan was, they were more than ready to help the duo.
"Do you all understand?" Ben asked his men, standing atop the hall filled with at least a hundred soldiers. The training hall was huge, the top sheltered by a gigantic dome that kept them safe from the snow storm. Impressive columns supported the weight, intricate frescoes went along with it and overtook the walls to depict brutal battles and what must have been past heroes.
To be able to host hundreds of giants, the hall must have taken decades to build, but the result was magnificent. Adam was in fact admiring the work when the booming voices of the soldiers all answering 'yes' in unison brought him back to the present with a startle.
"Great! Then, are you ready to win this war?" The commander asked, raising his voice. The walls nearly shook when the warriors all shouted their affirmative answer. Adam had to put his hand on Evan's bulging bicep to hold back from falling under the tremors of the ground.
"So, that's your answer. Would you like to say a few words?" Ben turned toward them with a grin, alternating between Evan and Adam, not knowing which one was more talkative. Adam glanced up at his lover, knowing that he was the one normally doing the speeches, but he didn't dare to because they were still Evan's family. Knowing what his hedgehog was thinking, the half bred giant nodded and took a step forward, taking Adam's hand in his own in the process.
Evan stood before an army of giants, the absurdity of the situation making him want to chuckle nervously, but he held it back. Those men were probably led by his father in the past, judging by the age of many of them. Some were younger, even younger than him, but most were past the fifties. Giants did tend to live longer than humans, while it wasn't the case for him because of his half blood.
"We would like to thank you all for answering our call. This revolt won't be easy, and some of you probably won't come back. We admire your courage and the eagerness you show to help us. We will win." Evan finished by raising the hand holding Adam's, holding their arms up in their air. The warriors all roared at his words, throwing their weapons in the air. Evan was a man of few words, but it was enough to make the soldiers' blood boil. Giants were hot-blooded and loved the battles.
The revolt was just an excuse to stretch their sleeping muscles and to get rid of their past guilt.
Evan and Adam knew it too, but as long as they received support, they didn't mind the intent behind it. If they wanted to win, they needed all the help they could get.
Ben dismissed his men and ordered them to be ready in two days to leave. The soldiers went on their way and soon, the hall emptied itself. Now all alone, Ben turned toward the couple and grinned.
"Would you like to check out your inheritance, Evan?" The commander pointed to a door with his thumb, nodding toward it. The ex-slave pondered for a few seconds before acquiescing. Adam tightened his hold on his man's hand, feeling the palm of his lover turn sweaty and shake slightly. It was a huge step to overcome his past trauma. Seeing all this old stuff would probably bring back memories, and not happy ones, but it was necessary.
It was like spring cleaning. He needed to open the closet, clean up all the dust, and then he would be able to enjoy a wonderful summer free of messiness. However, the cleaning process was mandatory to be able to access the freedom.
Ben led them to the antic and unlocked the door with the key he held at his waist with a pile of other keys.
As soon as the doors opened, they could tell someone had been taking care of the piece. Not a single dust could be found on the shining weapons and armors. As they entered the room, Adam and Evan spotted chests full of sparkling gold coins and jewels, shelves and boards covered in weapons, and mannequins standing dressed in glossy armors.
"This is your legacy, Evan. You can take everything, or only what you need and come back later to take the rest. This will always be here for you and someone will take care of the stuff so it doesn't deteriorate. I will wait for you outside and give orders to messengers, take your time." Ben explained as he swiped his finger against a shield, nodding in satisfaction when it came back clean. Once he made sure that the man had heard his words, he turned back on his heels and closed the door after himself.
Evan took his time looking around, his breath sometimes stopping and becoming shaky. Adam followed him like his shadow, offering as much support as he could. He stayed silent, knowing that words didn't have their place in this almost sacred moment. He didn't touch a single thing, letting Evan fully focus on the moment.
The ex-slave finally stopped before a wooden sword for children that looked like it had had better times.
The ice walls he had built around himself to survive crumbled and the half-giant fell to his knees, sobs racking his body as he held his head in between his shaking hands.
Hey dear readers, Evan is going through so much :*(
