Warning : Gore and violence
As Evan distracted the snake one last time, he waited for Blaze to do the same to make sure that the beast was still distracted until the spell was launched. However, they didn't expect the snake to suddenly turn toward Adam, its crest full of poisonous spikes ready to attack.
"Blaze!" Evan shouted, knowing that he didn't have anything to throw anymore. The fox opened its mouth, but only small sparks fell out, his mana reserves out. Blaze looked at his father with wide eyes full of fear. The giant's mind went blank as his body moved by itself. In the blink of an eye, he found himself tackling Adam to the ground as the warrior finished launching his spell.
The snake exploded after, successfully dead.
The warrior groaned as he came back to his senses, his body crushed under Evan's.
"Everything's fine?" The giant asked as he got up, holding out his hand for Adam to take. Evan's hands were shaking slightly, but the warrior chose not to comment. The fright he just felt must have been immense for the slave to be this distraught.
"Yeah... Thank you." The warrior answered as he got up, checking his body for any injuries and finding none apart from a couple bruises. Blaze joined them, yipping in happiness at their victory. Evan turned toward the snake to take in their new prize, only to suddenly feel light headed.
"Evan!"Adam shouted as the giant stumbled forward. Both men looked down at where Evan's hand had shot up with a feeling of sharp pain, only to see a long black slash on his side, just under his ribs. The skin was sizzling, clearly poisoned.
"Fuck, we need to heal you!" The warrior said with urgency, knowing that each second spent being infected was one second closer to death. A poison as corrosive as this one could rot away the organs. Evan grunted his acknowledgement, helping Adam lay him down. Still, even if they wanted to heal him, they were quite aware that there wouldn't be any antidote in the surroundings, such high grade healing potions guarded heavily in the big city.
Evan blinked tiredly as he felt water drops on his face, eyebrows furrowing as he wiped the water away. The sky had been blue a few minutes ago, it was strange that it was starting to rain now.
"S-sorry..." Adam apologized and the giant understood that it was the warrior's tears. He tried to focus his gaze above him and blink away the blurriness entering his vision. As he succeeded, he saw a sight that broke his heart. Adam was sobbing above him, his face looking absolutely devastated as he looked down at his dying lover. He cradled Evan's face on his thighs, using his rough hands to rub his cheeks in gentle circles.
"Don't cry..." The giant said, his heart not enduring seeing his partner cry. Adam only sobbed harder, trying to keep his breathing even, but failing miserably. Evan reached his hand up to gently rub Adam's face, wiping away the tears flowing down in torrents. The warrior felt like his whole life was crashing down. They had been so happy, Evan, Blaze and him, it wouldn't make sense if the giant died so soon like that. Just when they had reached a good way to function as a family.
It was unfair.
Even Blaze was whimpering and crying at his side, nuzzling his stomach with his wet nose. He didn't want his father to die, nor his dad to suffer. He wanted his merry family back. He wanted to come back in time to the good times. Just this morning, they had spent hours catching fishes, his parents laughing when the fox splashed the two men, making false angry noises as they ran after him. When they had succeeded in catching their squirmy prey, they had tickled him until he was breathless.
They had spent so many good memories together, it couldn't end like this.
Adventurers were more prone to death than others, that Adam knew logically, but it didn't mean that his heart wouldn't burn in pain when seeing his lover slowly losing color and strength. He wanted to destroy the world, but he knew that it wouldn't bring back his Bear. It would be satisfying though, and maybe Evan would appreciate it, in the after-life...
Just as Adam opened his quivering lips to speak, they heard a thud behind him. They looked toward the sound and their eyes widened as they saw Ash standing there, looking anxiously at Evan.
"I-I saw the b-battle! I c-came to help... He's b-been poisoned, I-I can help hi-him!" The child said as he stumbled forward, his little feet unstable on the roof. Adam wanted to ask what the child was doing here as he quickly stretched his arms to help him keep his balance, but his attention caught the last words that Ash had said. Before he could question the child, Ash was already standing at Evan's side, pressing his palms against the rotting wound. Evan grunted at the pain, trying to squirm away, but Adam held him still, praying hard that what Ash said was true and that he could heal his lover.
At this moment, he could give anything, even his own life, to save Evan's.
Ash mumbled incomprehensive words and a bright golden halo surrounded his palms and the wound.
"Holy magic..." Adam muttered, shocked by the sight. Rare were those that could wield holy magic, and rarer were those that were children. It completely blew his mind that Ash, a child slave, was able to use it. The wound healed with speed visible to the naked eyes, gaining healthy color and closing until only a light pink line was left.
Life came back to Evan's face and his breathing stabilized.
Blaze shifted into his fox form and hurried to hold Ash as the kid stumbled to the side, seemingly in a deep sleep.
Evan got up slowly, twisting his body from side to side and only feeling a light tug at the newly healed skin. He turned toward his lover, but didn't have time to say anything before he was hugged in a ferocious embrace, all the air leaving his lungs. He coughed a few times, patting Adam on his shaking back.
"Alright, alright. Calm down, love, you are strangling me... I love you too." Evan said breathlessly, taking in a big breath as Adam released him. The warrior put his hands on the giant's shoulders, holding him at arm's-length as he looked him up and down with red puffy eyes and a running nose.
Evan nearly chuckled at the sight of his cute hedgehog worried antics, but he knew it wasn't the time so he bit his tongue instead.
"I thought I had lost you... I love you so much! I would have been so... so... I don't know, I don't have words to express my grief! I would have been just so devastated to see you gone." Adam exclaimed, starting to cry again with big wails. Evan chuckled at his lover's antics, but he knew how much it would have hurt Adam to see him dead, he would have felt the same way if the roles had been reversed.
"There, there..." Evan whispered as he hugged his big baby back into his arms, soothingly rubbing his back. He had also believed that he would die, and the most primary worry that had been in his mind was that he would leave Adam alone with Blaze in this cruel world. He couldn't bear the thought of his two persons alone without him. Even Ash had entered his mind as he was dying.
Before Adam bought him, he had been indifferent to death, even a little welcoming. Now, however, he found that he truly didn't want to die any longer.
He wanted to live a long fulfilling life with Adam, Blaze and Ash.
