"Now, now, no need to be nervous. You see, I always wanted a position of power. However, I do think that the current royal system is long overdue. So many rules need to be abolished, while others need to be put in place. You, there, I heard that you were a slave before? I intend to shut down the slave business completely. I already have men infiltrated everywhere, ready to put my words into actions as long as I gave them the order to." Leo said as he pointed his chin at Evan, his silver eyes shining as he spoke of his future projects. Adam gulped at the ambition he could see swirling in the man's eyes, all the years suppressing it had made it just so much stronger.
"And what exactly will you do? What do you have in mind?" Adam pressed for an answer, not really feeling as if the prince had answered his previous question. He hated people beating around the bush, and a prince wouldn't be an exception.
"I want to cut the link we have with the other world. You must know about The Great Descent, yes? About the hole that connected us with this other word falling in ruins, forcing us to install this power based system to survive? Well, it's a royal secret, but we have a portal that connects us directly to this hole. The royal plan was wicked from the start. They just needed someone strong enough to close the hole and cut the link between our worlds, and everything would have gone back to how it was before, without mana. However, once they saw all the power they had gained, and the resources they had found, they chose to keep it open for longer, believing that it was for the better. With time, they slowly lost control of the link and now, no one is strong enough to close it or control the beasts coming into our world. Instead of waiting for the people to discover the truth and blame them, they chose to create a serum that made the beasts and humans crazy, hoping for those that weren't their allies to perish. That way, only those they had control over would be left, and they would have no choice but follow their orders if they didn't want to go crazy. They would then be able to continue ruling without a care, letting the rest of the word die. It's a dumb plan. They didn't really think about it, it's full of holes. The power got to their head and they can't think straight anymore." Leo finished his story under the horrified gaze of his audience. They didn't want to believe that the royals were hiding such secrets.
"So, here I come to the play. I want to overthrow the royals and nobles, punish them for their deeds and close the hole with your help. Then, I want to instaurate a government, just like in the past before The Great Descent. For the first years, I want to be the president as my reward, and then we can let the people vote for the next one. I swear that I only have the people's best interest in mind, and my first years will prove it. Then I will apply for the next mandate, and I hope that my actions will have convinced the people that I would be the best president. I have studied the past for many years now, noting what to do and what not to do. We need someone cultured in those aspects to be able to bring our society back to what it was, and I think I am the best qualified. I already have a few people in mind to help me rule, I have been gathering intel for many years on prodigies who often get overlooked because they are less power-based. You are free to postulate too, if you want." Leopold said as he looked at them with a serious expression, as if analyzing their strengths and weaknesses, as if he could see directly in their souls.
"No, no, no, Evan and I don't want to have anything to do with politics, no thanks. I think your plan is the best we could have. We don't trust you, but we don't see anyone more qualified than you to rule, honestly. After all this is over, we had planned to go on trips with the kids for our honeymoon, and I think we will just continue to be adventurers, or whatever this job becomes after the hole is closed." Adam answered quickly, not wanting to embark on a journey to be vice-president. The couple wasn't interested in the position of power at all.
"I agree with the plan. As for us, giants, we will stay in our mountains. Us, magical species, will gradually disappear once the hole closes, so it's best not to mingle with humans." Ben declared solemnly as he nodded to approve the plan. It was the truth too, once the hole closed, mana would gradually disappear. Of course, the magical creatures wouldn't just die suddenly, but the creatures birthed would have less and less mana in them, meaning that they would gradually lose their powers and attributes. It was as if they would gradually mix with humans, until they were all humans. Evan was a good exemple, if he were to have a child, which was impossible as Adam couldn't get pregnant, Evan had tried many times, then the kid would be smaller than him, but taller than a normal human. Then, when the child would have his own child, this one would be just like a normal human. Of course, it would take many decennies until all the mana had left the veins of magical beings and that they became like regular humans.
What Ben meant was that if the humans rebuilt their society with magical beings and adapted the society for them, for example by making buildings taller for giants, once the mana disappeared, those 'arrangements' would be useless. As such, instead of spending more money on taller buildings for the giants, it was better for them to live far away in peace and let the humans spend this money on things that will be useful for the future.
Once they had become just like regular humans, they could then choose to head to cities and mingle with humans.
Hey dear readers, do you think it's a good idea?
Also, don't look too much into the royals' plan, they are just dumb, just like this small author.
