Adam and Evan said goodbye to Dalia as they headed back toward the inn, having finished their conversation a few minutes earlier. She had offered to let them stay for supper, but they wanted to check on Kaleb and spend time with the sick mage, which she understood.
The two men arrived at the inn and ordered a light snack to be sent to their room, along with porridge for Kaleb. The mage would probably be sick of porridge for a while, but hopefully, it would teach him to talk when he wasn't feeling well before his condition deteriorated.
They entered Kaleb's room under the gaze of two guards standing beside it, the two giants not having to confirm their identity as their appearance made it clear enough that they were with the puny human inside the room.
Once inside, they saw a man standing beside the bed, taking Kaleb's pulse. If his action didn't make it obvious that he was the doctor assigned to their friend, then his long white coat would have given it away.
"Oh, hello there! I will leave you with your friend, I was just going on break. I looked over at him and he's fine now, he just needs to sleep and eat some more and he will get back to being his energetic self." The old man said as he stood up, popping his back with a satisfied groan. Adam and Evan thanked him and stepped aside to let the giant pass. The doctor waved away their thanks with a smile and gently closed the door behind him.
Adam and Evan approached the bed and saw that Kaleb was groggily waking up, blinking his eyes open with difficulty. Once he saw them, he gave what could be called an attempt at a smile, that in fact turned out more like a grimace.
"Hi, Kaleb. How are you feeling?" Adam softly asked as he sat down beside the bed. When he saw the mage try to stand up, he hurried to support his back and placed pillows behind it.
"Thank you... I feel like I was run over by a carriage pulled by six horses." The mage snorted as he rubbed his arms covered in goosebumps. Hearing his dry voice, Adam passed some water to him. Kaleb jumped on the water like a starving beast, gulping it down in under two seconds before letting out a sigh of relief once he was done.
"Thank you! My throat felt like the desert...Oh! Did you bring me something to eat?" The mage exclaimed as he saw the tray that Evan was holding. The half-giant smirked before setting down the porridge before the dark mage on a small table. The mage looked down at the porridge in horror, alternating between Adam and the plate of liquid with chunks in it as his fright grew when he realized that the warrior wasn't joking.
"Not again... I hate porridge now... How can you be so mean to a sick patient..." Kaleb complained tearfully, but he still took the spoon and started eating, knowing that he wouldn't get out of this argument victorious. Adam felt bad as he snaked on some fruits and cookies with Evan while the mage nearly threw up at each bit of his porridge. Evan patted him on the shoulder, silently gesturing that it was for Kaleb's best interest. The warrior nodded, knowing that it was true, but still not liking to see his friend suffering.
Once they were done eating, Evan having to shove the porridge down Kaleb's throat so that he would finish it all, the two lovers told the mage of their morning talk with Dalia. Kaleb voiced his happiness that the chief liked the gift, happy for both men.
When they saw the sick man's eyes start to shut without control, Adam and Evan decided to let him rest some more. He would need plenty of energy to be able to transport them all tomorrow along with the army of giants. After bidding him farewell, they headed back to Will's shop to get the things they ordered yesterday.
Seeing Evan start to act fidgety as they came closer and closer to the shop, Adam eyed him suspiciously. Just as the warrior was going to question him before the shop's door, the half-giant put his hand up before his lover's chest, signaling for him to wait outside. Adam raised a brow at the gesture, wondering what was going on.
"Please, Adam. I would appreciate it if you could wait for me outside the shop." Evan asked, trying his best to give puppy eyes to his lover. He knew that his hedgehog hated being kept in the dark, but he really wanted everything to be perfect. Knowing that his partner wouldn't ask something like that without any reason, Adam relented and went to sit on a much too big bench. His feet didn't even touch the ground, making him feel like a child as he swung his legs around.
Evan thanked him before disappearing inside the shop.
Adam waited in silence for a while, his mind spinning and trying to figure out what Evan was hiding, even though he tried to stop himself. He was just too damn curious!
As he started to ponder on the meaning of life, a giant child appeared before him. Adam startled, looking curiously at the kid that just showed up from nowhere. Or maybe, he was just too in his thoughts to see her approach.
"Mister, can you help me?" The child asked him, and Adam could feel his heart melt at the little girl's cuteness. She had pigtails on and a pink flowery dress. Having only been around boys and having two boys for children, Adam was weak toward little girls. She was still bigger than Blaze and Ash because of her giant genes, but she looked younger.
"Of course! How can I help you?" The warrior answered as he jumped down from the bench and crouched before the little girl. She smiled at him, showing him her two missing front teeth, making Adam swoon.
"My cat is stuck in a tree. I want to climb it to get him down, but my mommy told me to always ask an adult to do it for me because it's dangerous. You are the first adult I met on my way, could you help me, please?" The little girl asked with puppy eyes, making Adam nod without even realizing it. He only came back to his senses when he felt her tug on his hand and bring him in the direction of a part of the town they had yet to explore.
Adam looked back toward the still closed door of the shop, and sent a little prayer that Evan wouldn't panic too much once he saw him gone.
