Puttin' on the Ritz by Taco~
Their tent was pretty, and big. Rick wasn't kidding when he said that two tents were connected. It looked like they had glued two tents together, and then cut an opening in the middle where they met, stitched the sides, and then put a 'door' in the hole. The tent was all in white, inside and out, with red and blue tribal marks painted on it.
The inside was cozy, furnished in minimalist style, but with much warmth that could be felt from the hand-crafted furniture. There were tables, desks and a big bed, with plenty of fur cushions and covers. There was a small furnace to keep warm in the winter and grill things, and a few artisanal candles to light the night.
When they entered the children's tent, Blaze squealed in delight before jumping on the bed covered in a mountain of fur, rolling around and burrowing in it. Ash soon joined him, be it in a little bit more reserved way, but he soon threw his timid nature out as he realized just how soft and comfortable the bed was.
The kids quickly became obsessed with their bed, bouncing on the soft fur and swimming like little fishes in their favorite pond.
"Be careful not to hurt yourself or break anything, kids. We will go see our tent now." Adam told the shifters, raising his voice to be heard above the sound of giggles. The fox and the snake nodded at him before waving, sending them away.
"You have cute kids." Rick said as they headed toward their tent, chuckling at the shifters' antics. Evan nodded, humming his approval, much to the scout's surprise, once again. He really shouldn't judge a book by its cover next time.
"Yes, they are wonderful. Ash has come a long way." Adam answered, his eyes taking on a pained expression as he remembered how the snake was so afraid of everything at first. Rick's curiosity was picked, but he knew better than to ask, it looked like a sensible issue.
Maybe with time he would learn about the little snake shifter.
The couple were surprised when they entered their tent. It was similar to the kids' one, but much bigger and with more furniture. It also had more candles in well-thought places to create a more sensual atmosphere. The children's room had more small animals' pelts, while theirs had bears' ones, tigers and other big predators.
"With time, you will be able to furnish your room with the prey you will catch. For now, you can think of it as a starter pack. We will teach you how to skin animals and use their bones to build furniture." Rick explained as the couple took in their room. Both men quite liked it, without even speaking to each other, they knew it was more in their style than the flourish rooms of nobles with gold and ceramic. The tribal feeling it had strengthened their closeness with nature, while making them feel wild and free.
"You seem pretty confident that we will pass the test." Adam noted as he caressed the nightstand made with wood. It had been carved to follow the lines of the tree and paint pretty flowers blooming. All the furniture in here seemed to blend with nature, not forcefully taking its place.
"Yes, well, you are Adeline's son. I have no doubt that you will manage. Also, I'm a pretty good judge of strength and I can feel that your family is strong, be it individual or together." Rick complimented, puffing out his chest in pride. He wasn't arrogant, it was a matter of fact. He was a scout, his primary job was to analyze the tribe's surroundings and judge if the monsters or visitors were a menace. He had been doing it for decades already.
"Humm, thank you." Evan answered in Adam's stead as he turned around the giant tree in the middle of the tent. In fact, the tent had been built around a conifer and the top of it was tightly attached to the tree. It gave solidity without harming the vegetation. It also made the inside of the tent give off a fresh pine scent.
A wolf's cry was suddenly heard, making Adam and Evan flinch, picking up their respective weapons, Evan's his gloves and Adam's his spear. They took on a fighting stance, trying to see through the entrance if monsters were attacking.
"Don't worry, Mila is one of our domestic wolves. It's our clue that supper will be served soon. Would you like to go eat with everyone?" Rick explained to the stressed men. Adam coughed to hide his embarrassment, while Evan scratched his cheek as he put away his gloves. The warrior looked at the giant, seeking his opinion.
"Well, it would be nice for the children to meet other kids their age, and it wouldn't hurt us to meet the others." Evan answered on both of their behalf after making eye contact with his lover. Rick nodded, expressing his agreement before leading them back into the kids' tent.
"It's time to eat, kids!" The scout said, making Blaze and Ash perked up from under the fluffy covers. With the simple mention of food, the two shifters were running back into Adam and Evan's legs, holding their pants and looking up at them excitedly. Blaze even started to bounce on the balls of his feet, while Ash only looked quietly at Evan with sparkly eyes.
The two partners looked at each other with a resigned expression before letting out a chuckle.
Food always won.
The five of them headed out, Rick leading them toward what seemed like a giant bonfire. Meat was being grilled on branches while vegetables were heated up in earth bowls above the fire. The aroma was pretty good, considering the non materialistic nature of the tribe, along with their frugal way of living. Adam thought that the meat would be simple and bland, but it was in fact seasoned.
Evan heard a loud gulp, and looking down, he saw Ash salivating, not being able to contain his overflowing saliva. The giant's eyes creased at the corner as he smiled down at the snake. It seemed like they had picked up quite the gluttonous spirit.
Seeing them coming over, a few villagers elbowed their comrades, nodding toward them. In little time, all attention was on them. Ash hid behind Evan's legs, shivering slightly under all the glances. Adam was wondering how to approach the others, Rick silently encouraging him to introduce himself. Against all expectations, it was Blaze who stepped closer first, standing proudly before the pack with his fists on his hips.
"Hi! My name's Blaze! I hope we all get along!"
