Adam and Evan left Bastien after hearing an earful about the so-called smartphone. From what the man had deciphered in an old manuscript, the rectangular object could be used to communicate from far away, learn more knowledge and even distract oneself. It was truly a wonder. The dryad had found it when traveling in a far away land, more precisely in a cavern, perfectly preserved in an ice cube. They had also found other relics from before The Great Descent, but weren't able to identify their use.

"Are you hungry?" Adam asked Evan, himself starting to feel rumbles in his stomach. Seeing the giant nod, the warrior headed into a quiet restaurant and then chose a table in a far corner. Blaze obediently sat by Adam foot. They ordered something light to eat and even some jerky and water for the fox. As the waiter left and brought them back their food, the couple started to eat without talking. However, a question lingered in Evan's mind.

"Master, what's The Great Descent?" The slave asked, nearly sending Adam into a coughing fit as he slightly choked on a lettuce leaf. The warrior patted himself on the chest, having been surprised by the question. He thought it was common knowledge and that everyone knew about it. Still, Evan was a slave, and Adam didn't know since when, so maybe he never had any education.

"Mmm, where to start?" Adam contemplated, because it was a long story that needed to be made short. "Well, to start off, the continent we are in, Feloja, was created 574 years ago. Before then, from what we could gather from manuscripts, everyone was equal. People lived in an advanced world with wonderful technology. There were flying carriages that looked like birds, buildings as tall as mountains, some kind of rectangular can that could transport people, and so much more. In this world, each person could choose their path, and they were equals. There was no magic, dungeons, or monsters. There were still wars, but it was much more peaceful than now."

Evan's eyes widened at the prospect of such a world, where slavery didn't exist. What would have happened if he and Adam had been born in such a peaceful area? Would they have met?

"So, why is it that our world has deteriorated so much? From what we know, one day, a scientist found violet smoke coming from a crack in the ground in Icelands, or Antartica, as it was called before, in a place completely isolated from the world. The scientist, driven by curiosity, smashed the ground open around it. It was the beginning of The Great Descent." Adam took a short break to finish his drink before continuing on his story. All the while, Evan looked at him with a twinkle in his eyes, just like a kid whose curiosity got picked.

"Mana, something that didn't exist before, came out of the hole in great quantity. Sadly, our world had been in close contact with a parallel world on the verge of destruction. It seems like a powerful monster that could control space itself had made the crack while fighting against another monster. Now that mana emerged into our world, the two parallel spaces started to fuse, which led to the creation of dungeons, which are, in fact, space fragmented, and magic power. The humans and monsters' bodies started to assimilate mana and became what we are today, with different species such as werebeasts, giants, strange animals and more. Humans created a mana core in the center of their body and mana vessels supersposed to their blood vessels. No living creatures other than the monsters came out of the space's fractures, meaning that intelligent species had all been killed. From what we know, only weak and medium monsters come into our world, the more powerful ones too big to pass through the entrances hidden in the dungeons."

Evan's expression darkened, understanding what Adam had implied. The high ranking adventurers already had difficulties with the highest rank monsters, more powerful ones would lead them to their demise for sure.

"As people started to develop their power, different factions, the nobles, were created by the most powerful families, creating the kingdoms we are familiar with. The strongest became known as the royal families and gave their name to the piece of land they called their continent, ruling over the kingdoms. They were no longer political or democratic governments. If you were weak, expected to become a slave or be killed. The rule of the strong once again became the truth. Unimaginable ressources started to appear from dungeons, such as artifacts or mana potions. Soon, the strong weren't only those with the most power, it was also those with the most magical objects. Technology wasn't something people wanted to spend time on any longer, much more interested in exploring dungeons and making money, so we slowly became dependent on magic and artifacts, and lost all the progress humanity had made for centuries." Adam continued, his fists clenching down as he thought of all the homeless living near his ex-mansion. Before, there was support from the government for such people, from what he had read, but now, they were left to die.

"Nowadays, the royal family and the nobles have gone lazy, only relying on artifacts to exercise their power. They do not train any longer, only doing the bare minimum to keep their title and not be overthrown. They do not feel the need to go into dungeons anymore, much more enthusiastic at the thought of hiring high ranking adventurers to do this and instead drink and party to their heart's content. All the while, villagers suffer from monsters' outbreaks, monsters coming out of the dungeons, because there is no one to take care of it. The adventurers are all too concerned with making money and obeying the nobles to take care of the weaker dungeons that pose problems to the villagers. Anyway, that's pretty much it, I hope it was clear!" Adam said before wiping his mouth with a handkerchief, having finished his food as he took pauses between his speech. His bad mood had started to affect his hunger, but he didn't want to keep himself from eating such delicacies just because of other's choices, so he finished it all.

"Yeah, thank you." Evan answered, his piercing gaze on Adam's lips. The warrior rolled his eyes at the giant's antics before raising his hand to ask for the bill. As the shorter man paid with their newly received pay, the slave wondered if closing the gap in Icelands could possibly separate the two worlds and make their world peaceful again. However, he quickly shook his head to get rid of the thought.

If it was that easy, surely someone would have tried by now, wouldn't they?
