They soon reached the end of the dungeon, hidden deep in the cavern. The quest was to hunt the boss monster and take its corpse back to the city. No one had been strong enough to defeat it, and there was no eye witness still alive to tell what it was. However, considering the weak flow of mana escaping the cave, it shouldn't be stronger than D-rank. After defeating the monster, the core holding the dungeon together and allowing monsters to invade their world would be broken, closing the gate.

The couple with their pet stood before the door and exchanged words on how to proceed with the fight. They would need to be perfectly in sync.

The doors were made by experts, allowing only adventurers to enter and exit with their adventurer's cards. It was a mechanism that had been created in the early beginning of the Great Descent, when supposedly there were doors locked by electricity and even some weird carousel-like bars placed in a horizontal position to prevent people from entering places. At first, the doors had been transparent, made from a strong glass, but now, the technique to create such masterpieces had been lost. The doors were made of hard rock with magic symbols on it to allow them to open.

After finishing their little caucus, Adam placed his adventurer's card on the stand before the doors. Evan and Blaze took position a little further before him, taking a fighting stance if the monster was going to attack right from the start.

A squall of hot air immediately hit their faces, making them sweat instantly and ruffling Blaze's fur. Even the hood on the lovers' head had difficulty staying upright. As their view adapted to the air, Evan and Adam's eyes widened. In the center of the room, a huge snake was curled up. Its scales were a fiery red and his mouth was the size of a grown adult. With each breath it took and let out, another gust of hot wind followed.

It was a fire snake, a C-rank monster.

Adam now understood why no one had been able to conquer this dungeon.

They didn't have time to marvel at the entity before them, because it was already starting to wake up, the cold air flowing inside its nest rousing it up. Evan and Adam quickly entered the nest, Blaze on their trail. The couple separated on both sides, wanting to divide its attention. The fox chose to remain right in front of the snake, ready to attack the scaly creature. As the snake was a fire monster, like himself, he felt that defeating it could make him stronger, and even allow him to evolve. He couldn't explain his thoughts to his masters, and time was lacking, so he would go with the flow for now.

With a deafening hissing sound, the snake woke up, its burning pupils tightening into slits as it realized that its nest had been invaded by weak parasites. It opened his huge mouth, boiling lava preparing to be expelled from his stomach, but Adam wouldn't let him do so. With the utmost concentration he was able to muster along with his mana, the warrior created an enormous snowball, sending it flying right into the beast' throat. The snake hissed at the cold feeling cooling down his fire. It tried to retch to dislodge the snow, but it was already melting inside it's stomach, cutting off temporarily his fire supplies.

As he saw that the snake was still confused, Evan took this opportunity to jump on the snake's body, coiled into a small mount. He jumped across the piles of scales, taking care not to slip. With one last propulsion, he threw himself at the snake's face. His fist went flying into the monster's eye, making it shriek in pain and anger. Evan tried to quickly escape to a safe place, but his body was suddenly hit by the snake's tail, sending his giant self colliding against the cavern's walls.

A small amount of blood escaped his lips, painting them scarlet, and he clutched his ribs.

The beast raised his head up in the air, before slamming it down with his mouth wide open, sharp fangs in full display. The giant opened his arms and caught the monster's upper and lower lips between his hands, holding the mouth open to keep the snake from chewing him down. Sweat pearled on his face, his muscles spamming as he tried to hold it, his bent knees shaking.

Adam's eyebrows furrowed and he growled at the snake, mad that his lover had been hurt. He attacked the reptile, trying to catch its attention and let Evan rest. With a quick steps' game and swift moves, he arrived behind the snake. He bent his knees, lowering his center of gravity, before jumping high, swinging down his spear to pierce the scales. However, even as he mustered all the strength he had, his spear only chipped the scales a little, and then bounced off, making him stumble to the wall behind him.

The snake didn't even flinch, nor turned back.

Adam clenched his fists, frustrated, but chose not to let his hope down. He ran around the monster, trying to injure it from different angles. He was followed by an angry fox that tried to bite the villain snake, but only succeeded in making his teeth ache. All the while, Evan tried to hold back the snake, but more blood flew out between his lips, his inner injury worsening. He had taken a bad hit, normally he wouldn't have that much difficulty in a power battle.

Blaze tried to help his struggling master, but it seemed like his fangs had no effect on the tough scales, and his fire did nothing too, not even blackening it.

The snake uncoiled his body as it tried to gather more strength, and the fox's eyes were instantly attracted to the soft abdomen of the monster. With a happy yip, Blaze ran toward the patch of soft skin, and pierced it with his fangs. The snake hissed and threw his body against the wall behind violently, trying to dislodge the fox biting him. Blaze quickly freed the monster to avoid being crushed and ran toward Evan to put himself in between the snake and his injured master.

Adam soon followed and helped the giant stand up.

Hey dear readers, how do you think the battle will end?
