A few days had gone by in the blink of an eye.
The little family had grown accustomed to their new member, adjusting their routine to make the snake fit in. It was awkward at first for the fighting, as Ash wasn't a fighter, more like a support. But then they came up with different strategies so that the snake could help or stay safe without worrying the others.
Adam was currently cleaning his spear after they had taken down a boar. He didn't want the blood on his weapon to damage the blade faster. Evan was dismembering their prey with Blaze's help, while Ash was on sampling duties. The snake was entrusted by Adam to look around the area they were in to see if there were any comestible plants.
After nearly a week of having assisted Adam in his sampling, the shifter was knowledgeable enough to work on his own.
Adam's whole body went taut like a bow as he heard a faint rustling sound, his instinct on high alert. Before he could call Ash back, someone came out of the bushes, holding the shifter in his arms like a hostage.
"Don't move or I will harm the child." The man said, holding a dagger against Ash's neck. The snake was shivering pretty badly, his mouth stuffed with a tissue that kept him from talking. Adam's heart squeezed as the shifter whimpered, tears sliding down his red cheeks.
"What do you want?" Adam said as he stayed as motionless as possible. Evan and Blaze followed his lead, not moving an inch and just looking from the corner of their eyes at the intruder.
It was obvious that the man was from the Aleksy's tribe, or at least used to be. He had the same dark skin as Adam, along with his black mane, but with white strands due to his age and wrinkles on his face. His body was covered in tattoos, and from what Adam knew of the significance of those tattoos, they had a scout before them, a strong one used to patrolling the surroundings of the tribe. The man had dark brown eyes that were throwing daggers at them, full of hostility.
However, his expression changed when he got a better look at Adam.
His eyes widened, looking in disbelief, but before Adam could comment, his expression was back to normal.
"You will need to follow us." The tribe's member declared as he turned back into the forest. Adam didn't have any time to question the 'us' that more tribe's members surrounded them. It was frightening, as they hadn't sensed them at all, not even Blaze with his sensible nose.
Not having much of a choice, the little family gave up on the dead boar and instead followed the man still holding Ash. At least, he had put away his dagger and was holding Ash like a baby, making the snake calm down. It nearly made Adam relax, before he realized that the tribe's members couldn't help glancing at him curiously every minute, which made him tense back up right away. He didn't like receiving that much attention, unless it was Evan's.
They walked in the forest in an awkward silence and tense mood for half an hour before finally reaching an open space.
The forest opened up to reveal a temporary village consisting of tents and makeshift installations.
As they entered the village, many members turned to stare at them, their gaze mostly lingering on Adam. The warrior could sense Evan's darkening mood, but he was also starting to feel jealous himself as a few members ogled his lover's giant frame.
They came to a stop before the biggest tent in the village. Adam guessed that it must belong to the village's chief, and the scout's words that followed confirmed his guess.
"Chief, I have brought visitors." The man shouted, announcing their arrival.
"Did I not say that visitors weren't allowed anymore!? Aren't you supposed to chase them away, not bring them closer!?" An angry voice belonging to an old lady came out of the tent, her grumbling about incompetent subordinates following her shout. Adam raised an eyebrow at the situation, exchanging a perplexed look with his lover who was equally as confused.
"I know, but I think you should definitely look at one of the visitors, or you will regret it." The scout argued, not looking ready to back down in the slightest. Adam could easily guess that he was the visitor in question, but he couldn't guess why. It wasn't the fact that he was most probably the child of one of their tribe's members. He had read plenty of books about the tribe to know that childs born outside of the tribe weren't welcomed. There hadn't been any exception that he knew of.
"Alright, let them in.. But if you were wrong, you will be on cleaning duty for a month." The old lady grumbled from inside the tent, making the scout wince slightly at the threat. Still, he stepped closer and opened the tent, gesturing for their little family to get inside. Evan and Blaze entered first, while Adam stayed just one step outside the tent, glaring at the scout. The man frowned in confusion and gestured inside once more.
"Let. my. child. go." Adam muttered darkly between clenched teeth, holding down his anger. The man looked down at the pitiful snake in his arms who was looking with begging eyes at his dad. He sighed, knowing that it was best to obey for now. Anyways, he never planned to really hurt the shifter, he just needed him to scare the parents.
As soon as Ash's feet were on the ground, Adam snatched him up into his own arms, glaring at the scout as he walked inside the tent, the opening closing after he was fully in.
Before Adam could even join his lover and child further away, an old lady sprinted toward him with widened eyes. The warrior flinched back as the chief made a move to touch him, putting distance between them.
It seemed to wake the lady up from her frenzy as she stopped on her track and blinked in confusion.
It was Adam's turn to be confused as the old lady started bawling like a child.
