Adam groaned as silently as he could as he tried to wrap a bandage made of his clothes around the injury he had on his thigh. The night had gone painfully slow. The five lizardmen's corpses had been hidden in bushes, and he had climbed into a tree to keep guard.

With his arm dislocated, the many cuts he had, the giant wound on his thigh, and the one above his eyes, he sure cut a sorry figure. He had completed the trial, but at what cost? He still needed to take back the corpses to the village, but in the night his wound had gotten infected and he now had a fever.

He could barely keep himself from groaning outloud and attracting predators, his vision was blurry and his fingers shook with strain. He wouldn't be able to make it back to the village by tonight unless a miracle happened.

It was frustrating. He had fought like a lion, tore his foes into mince meat, but he wouldn't complete the trial because his fucking legs wouldn't fucking move.

Adam slammed his uninjured fist into his thigh with a frustrated growl, instantly regretting his choice as pain radiated all the way to his toes and up his chest.

He wanted to fucking cry.

The warrior had to take deep breaths in order not to explode into a sobbing mess. He just wanted to live happily with his family, was that too much to ask for? What would he give to be able to snuggle into his beefy boyfriend's arms, their two children cuddling with them as they watch the stars.

Everything. That was the answer.

Instead, here he was, hurting all over, hallucinating with a high fever, probably going to die because of an infection or because a wild predator would eat him.

All alone. Just like he always had been.

Now, his mind was even playing tricks on him because he swore he could see Rick coming toward him with what seemed like a.... silver snake? Adam watched, confused, as the scout came closer, smiling up at him from the ground before setting the little snake down on the grass, who hissed toward him before starting to slither right and left, as if pacing anxiously.

"Congratulations, Adam. You passed the trial. I will get you down from there and our little friend here, Ash, will heal you." Adam blinked at Rick's words, thinking that it was the scout that was going crazy, trying to make him believe that the snake was his Ash.

However, as Rick gently carried him off the tree and on the ground, settling him just beside the snake, Adam had to admit that the silver snake did look like Ash probably would if he shifted. Those cute golden eyes looked weirdly worried as they watched him huff and puff, trying to breathe normally against the strain of his broken ribs.

"So adorable..." Adam chuckled weakly as he raised his hand to pet the noodle. The snake slithered back a little, seemingly afraid, but the warrior let his hand suspended, wanting to touch the scaly little thing but not daring to scare him. The snake seemed to make a decision before it slithered forward, pressing its flat head and rolled up nose against Adam's outstretched hand.

The warrior sighed at the cooling feeling, gently caressing the scales of the snake with fondness. It really reminded him of Ash, and as he felt a warm healing feeling envelop his body, the warrior concluded that the snake was in fact his Ash.

"You lovely little thing, how come you didn't shift before, Ash? You are so endearing..." Adam said weakly, his voice hoarse and his lips cracking. The snake only hissed softly in answer, pressing his head harder against Adam's hand and letting the warrior pet him all the way from his nose to the end of his tail. Said tail started to sway lightly like a dog's as the snake continued to be petted while healing his Dad.

Rick let the two bond in silence, surveying the area and making subtle signals to other tribe's members to take back the lizardmen's corpses so as to not disturb the dad and his child.

His attention was caught when Ash made a worried hissing sound, rubbing his body urgently against Adam's limp hand that had fallen to his side. Rick frowned before realizing with relief that the warrior had only fallen asleep after receiving treatment.

"Don't worry, Ash. You did an excellent job, he is all healed. Your Dad only fell asleep." The scout reassured the anxious snake, crouching down to carry Adam in his arms in a princess carry. He could see that the warrior was all healed, with only a scar left on his eyebrow, near his eye, and on his thigh. He would probably have sore ribs too, but it was normal as internal injuries were much harder to heal. Adam was still all covered in dried blood, which would probably scare the rest of his family, so he would need to speak fast, mostly when meeting the warrior's overprotective bear.

Rick was not looking forward to this meeting.

Ash climbed up Rick's arm when the scout crouched down to take Adam, and he slithered his way on top of his Dad's chest. The slow motion of it filling with air and then expelling it was soothing down his nerves a lot.

They walked farther away and Ash started to recognize the landmarks he had seen before unexpectedly meeting his Papa in the bush. As they approached the spot, an uneasy silence filled the air.

"Put. Him. The. Fuck. Down." Ash and Rick heard a voice growl behind them. Rick winced, having already expected things to go south, while Ash shivered at the murderous intent in his Papa's voice.

"Ok, ok. Don't worry, Ash, the little snake here, healed him up. He's just exhausted. Your son will heal you too for his trial. Also, congratulations, Evan, you passed the trial." Rick quickly explained while still putting down Adam and stepping a few feet away to let the angry bear protect his partner in peace. Ash followed Rick, feeling a little afraid of the way his Papa looked.

Evan only grunted, hurrying to reach his lover and check him all over while Rick rolled his eyes.

Hey dear readers, Evan is going to be pretty overprotective ;)
