Warning : brief mention of suicide
After learning the shocking truth about their rulers, the two men decided to let the reality fully enter their brain before making any decisions. As such, they went to find something to eat and settled down for dinner with Kaleb.
Blaze was still out in the woods hunting and Ash was eating with Riz and their other friends, so it was only the three of them.
They ate mostly in silence, sometimes exchanging anecdotes of the past few years and sharing information. Evan and Adam learnt that in the few years they were gone, most villages had gone in ruins because of the more frequent attacks of monsters and the disappearance of strong adventurers. The town where they had last seen Lev and Sylvie was still hanging on, and the couple hoped that the two elves were still alive and well, but by Kaleb's words, it probably wouldn't last much longer. At least, Abigail, the retired adventurer with fiery red hair, and Erwin, the little chubby fairy, were situated in the town where Adam's ex family lived, so they would probably be safe for a while.
Once their meal was finished, the three men sat in a circle, each in their thoughts.
It was Kaleb who broke the silence.
"Look... I know you guys are settled here and you have kids now, so I know it's a long shot, but I wanted to ask. Would you be willing to help me create a revolution? At first, I had just planned on taking down Duke Valyois, but now that I know all the nobles are implicated, we have no choice but to take them all down. We have no way of knowing if copies of the concoction were spread around. It will be dangerous and you could lose your life, so feel free to say no." The dark mage looked the two men in the eyes with a rare serious expression, knowing that it wasn't the time to joke around.
Adam and Evan exchanged glances as if speaking telepathically, and if Kaleb didn't know it was impossible, he sure would have thought they were able to do so.
"Like you said, Kaleb, it's dangerous. However, we trained for this day for the past years. We were just thinking of when to leave before finding you, and we think this is the sign we were waiting for. Our children... They aren't like the rest of them. They knew we would do this and still told us they would follow us, and we won't make them stay out of it. We are a family, and family sticks together through best and worst." Adam explained, knowing that it was probably hard for the mage to understand why they would risk children's lives, but he hadn't been there all those times they had fought together against predators stronger than them. They were united, and fighting without one member of their team against such a strong opponent would be suicide.
"Sooo, will you help?" Kaleb asked to be sure. He didn't judge the adults for taking the children with them. He could tell the two dads loved the kids. He had seen bad parents in the past, ones that starved their child or beat them, and he could tell with certitude that Adam and Evan weren't in that category. Their past was particular, and so was the children's, and they each had their own reason for acting in a certain way.
"Yes, we will." Adam answered in a straightforward way, knowing that there wasn't any taking back now that he had said it.
"And we will too." A woman's voice was heard at the entrance of the tent, making the three men look back in surprise at the elderly that had entered the tent without their knowledge. Athena smiled at their shocked expression, knowing that the men couldn't understand why they hadn't sensed her enter even with their keen senses.
"Sorry for eavesdropping, I heard you had a guest and wanted to meet him, but you were engaging in a pretty interesting conversation so I didn't dare interrupt. We, the Aleksy's tribe, will support your revolution and provide you with our best warriors, weapons and strategists. We will not condone the acts of the nobles. We may not have any mana, but fighting is our strength." The tribe's chef said confidently, placing her hand above her heart as if swearing. Adam's mind was blank at the woman's statement, not expecting such a turnaround.
"Thank you to all of you! Together, we will succeed and defeat the evil plot of the nobles." Kaleb exclaimed, more than happy that so many people wanted to join his revolution. It was more than he expected, honestly. A revolution wasn't a small matter, it was a life and death situation.
"Thank you, Grandma Athena. Still, I'm not sure we will be enough to conquer the nobles, they have strong artifacts and guards..." Adam muttered, deep in thoughts as he tried to think of more people who could potentially help. All his other friends were non-combatant, or injured like Abigail, they could help, but not with the fight.
"I think I may have a solution for that." Evan sighed before voicing his thoughts. Everyone could see that it was bothering him and was far from an ideal situation for him, but the giant still chose to share his idea.
"We can contact my family." Evan said and time seemed to stop. Kaleb didn't know what was wrong with the statement, but he could see the air start to freeze around Adam and even Athena took on a strange expression.
"Your... family? You never told me about them." Adam took on the leading role in obtaining answers. In all those years they spent together, the warrior had learnt that Evan's family was a touchy topic, and he had waited all those years for him to approach the topic first, but the giant had never done so. Now, with other people around, Evan had brought out the subject first, and in a strange context at that.
"I will explain everything, but it may take some time. I wanted to keep this conversation away for as long as possible, but it seems like it's time." The giant answered, rubbing his hand over his face. Kaleb asked if he wanted him to leave so he could have this conversation in private, but the giant denied. It would be quicker if they heard it all at the same time and would make any future conflicts easier to solve.
"I come from a tribe in the faraway mountains, a tribe of descendants of the giants. My father was the leader, a strong man, but also a ruthless one. One day, he went hunting and met my mom. It was love at first sight, for him only. He kidnapped her and forced her to have me. Let's just say he didn't treat her with love. She treated me well nonetheless, until she abandoned me with the monster who called himself my father. She took her own life. She couldn't stand the abuse anymore, and even though I knew it was what was best for her, a small part of me still resented her for leaving while she knew my father would take it out on me."
Adam gasped at the revelation and hurried to sit down on Evan's laps, hugging him tight.
